The pre '69 car weren't COPO but dealer swapped, the were order as L78 cars and was swapped the short block for a L72, the cam, heads, intake a carb were the same. @@user-A-A-RON Not wrong! Look it up. If you saw a 68 GTX with a 6 barrel engine, it was after market job. Again, the 440 six barrel/ six pack engine was first introduced by Chrysler mid year 1969 with the A12 package on the super bee and road runner. By the way, Plymouth called it the 6 bbl while Dodge called it a six pack. I should know, I am 71 and lived it. From 67, the first year for the GTX, through beginning of 68 the only engines you could get in a GTX was the standard 4 bbl 440 with the only option of the 426 Hemi. Some more history. Did you know that the only two engines you could get in a road runner was the standard 383 with the only option being the Hemi. The 440 was not available in a road runner as Plymouth did not want the road runner to compete with the GTX.

The first "muscle car" - specifically advertised for speed and track numbers, was probably the '55 Chryslers - a decade before GTO. 300 HP V8, hot cam, solid lifters, dual 4-barrels, big bore dual exhaust. In '56 a hemi with 355 HP. Some people would even make a case for the late 1940s Olds Rocket 88. Regardless, there were cars that were about speed and style well before John Delorean.

To also set the record straight: The Plymouth Barracuda was introduced 2 weeks prior of the Mustang, and was the first Pony car. The Mustang was later release via Lee Iococca, then with Ford, to compete with the Barracuda, and later in '67 the Camaro, then Firebird. The Barracuda was America's first fastback and also still holds the record of the largest rear window used in any production vehicle, which was 14 square feet of glass. It was also the first car to have separate from headlights, parking lights. In 1965 came the optional Formula S with 273 cid V8 having 235 HP. In '66 it offered the 273 Commando with 275HP with long duration cam, domed Pistons, and forged crank. In '66 it won the SCCA sponsored indurance race as Team Starfish driven by Scott Harvey. The rest was legendary.,only t be killed by Gov and insurance regulations after 1974.

The 1955 Chrysler C-300 was the very first American muscle car and was also the very first regular production car with 300 horsepower. Then in 1956 the other 3 Mopar divisions(besides Imperial)released their own high performance models...the DeSoto Adventurer, Dodge D-500, and Plymouth Fury. Mopar invented muscle cars nearly a decade before the 1964 Pontiac GTO. Ask Jim Wangers. He said the exact same thing in his memoirs. When the 300 horsepower 55 C-300 came out the most powerful V8's from Ford and GM weren't even making 200 horsepower. Needless to say the Chrysler 300's dominated NASCAR in 1955-56 and the Dodge D-500's were just as dominant as the 300's were in 1956

Even though the 1971 & 1972 Road Runners turned out to be poor sellers, I thought they were super tough looking cars. I know some people don't like their looks, it's still my favorite. I think one could argue that 1961 was the FIRST year of the true "Muscle Cars". Chevy had the 409; Dodge had the 413 Ram and Ford had the 390 Hi-Po engine. I think the GTO became the most ICONIC Muscle Car so as time went on most thought of it as the FIRST of its kind but I think that is not quite true. One could even argue that the 1955 Chrysler 300 series was the original MC with the Hemi engine, solid lifters, stiff suspension and louder exhaust. For sure, that time period produced a huge number of exciting cars which gave us a hint of America's future infatuation with fast, sexy cars over the next 60 years and continuing to this day.

Having built and driven a 69 AMX , A 70 Judge, and a 69 383 road runner back in the day. The AMX was the quickest and squirreliest, The Judge was the prettiest and fun to drive, the 383 road runner was the most consistant.at the track! The Judge was the most consistant daily driver even with an automatic. Anything more then a straight line the road runner and Amx wer left in the dust! This from personal experience working in a speed shop in the 70's. They need real car guys from back in the day to rate muscle cars not guys from now that never drove then! They even left off the 455 stage 1 buick.
@danconway55054 жыл бұрын
@@JoeSakicisgod1 Of the 3 The Judge was the prettiest and the 2 seater AMX was the wildest. It gets real honorable mention because they didn't make many parts for it, and it was snake strike quick! While the road runner was fast it really had weak brakes.

These ran in the upper 11's...Remember 185 60 series bias ply tires they came with had no traction yet ran high 12's - 13's spinning ! My Dad owned his 70 Cuda 440 6bbl since 1970 when new,2 weeks after he bought it he ran 11.80's by tuning the carbs,adding headers/custom mufflers,traction bars and laughable 10 inch wide drag slicks that spun 130 feet down the track lol ! They hook less than a modern tire !

The Dodge Daytona/Superbird didn't make the list? You chose a 1969 Camaro SS/RS 396 over a Yenco Camaro or COPO? No 409 on the list, it's the icon of muscle cars? No HEMI Charger 500? No Buick GS or GSX w30 455? No 67 Shelby 500 427? No 68 HEMI Dart or Cuda? I don't see a Yenco Nova on your list. You skipped the 63 split window Fi Vette! That is one sad list. Don’t get bent over this list of muscle car top ten. Or the honorable mention of others. Much like the women we think are hot, the lists are subjective. One thing we should all agree about is that EVERY muscle car has its place and openly or secretive, we all love em despite being brand loyal 😉

Jason Cardoza as Bob Seeger once said about old rock and roll music, Todays cars ain't got the same soul( for the most part),, There is something about an old fashioned American muscle cars that have enough torque to twist the shit out of axles and RIP the shit out of rear tires I don't care if it's from GM Ford Chrysler ( MOPAR) American Motors or for that Matter Studebaker, or, For that matter any of the quantities of Imports that had American V8s(do yourself a real treat study some of those!) To a car guy there is always something almost sacred about listening to a high torque American muscle car hooking up and doing what it was designed to do!

AMC produced the 2 seater AMXs from 1968 to 1970. With factory options including Doug Thorley headers, 390 stroker motor crossram dual 4 barrel edelbrock intake dual Holley 4bbls an amc 20 with posi and 5.11 to one gearing this was the fastest production car in the quarter mile in 1969. They shared many parts with the Javelin but shorter wheelbase and only 2 seats.
@sd455pontiac Жыл бұрын
Wrong..... The AMX did not come factory equipped with any of those parts as a regular production option. What AMC did offer was select catalog aftermarket parts called "group 19" that you got through the parts department and installed yourself. In 1969 AMC commisioned Hurst to build 54 SS AMX cars for super stock class drag racing that were not street legal. Those 54 were race cars only sold to select racers to fly the AMC banner at the drag strip. While the 1969 SS AMX race package was the most potent AMC it was by far not the fastest. Chrysler had Hurst build 80 Hemi 1968 Dodge darts equipped dubbed "LO23" and 80 Hemi 1968 Plymouth Barracudas "BO23".. As delivered the Hemi mopars were a full second quicker that the AMCs through the quarter mile and still rule SS/AA Super Stock drag racing to this day.
