I like the blackish puffs. Ran a Unit dragline with a 3-71 that slobbered white but not on a load. Outfit got a rebuilt injector and heighth tool. Replaced the injector but the hole in the body was bradded so couldn't use the tool. Messed with the rack and it cleaned up and ran perfect. Original injector was probably good but the rack fixed it. Thay're a tough engine. Blessings

It may just be the audio but it sounds a little different with the 90's in . We'll see soon enough! Thanks for the video! Good stuff. God Bless

I agree, almost sounded more snappy…maybe quicker response…like you said, we will see!

@@clayclifford53 that little bit more fuel may increase to drive pressure just enough to spool that big compressor wheel quicker!

Thanks, yes it seems snappier now with the 90's in.:) With any luck I can get a dyno run in the next few days.:)

I seen it build boost on the video with your throttle taps…was that turbo or blower/ air box pressure?
@clayclifford393014 күн бұрын
Puffs some smoke with those short throttle inputs, but I wouldn’t say excessive…excited to see how they perform when warmed up and under load. I’d say the 90 on the end works great to observe emissions.

True, looking forward to a dyno run.:)

I wish you could explain how the letter and number code of different injector sets describes what are the difference in how they function and how that might affect how the 4-53 performs. I do enjoy this testing, but it would help me if you could explain your testing methodology and what are your goals for the eventual combination. And finally for now; it's going to be great to see the engine go into the Diamond T and the build take shape. Thanks!!
@detroitgarage943014 күн бұрын
Thanks, I'll have a talk about that on the next dyno session.:) The goals for this engine is to make 275-300 HP smoke free or minimal amount. I might make a dedicated video explaining the injectors, maybe others have the same questions.:)

I enjoy this content and watching you wrench and test. I am a 12 valve Cummins and Mercedes guy, so I have no previous knowledge of these engines other than what I am learning through you. I watched with great interest as you changed the injectors. It wasn't clear to me how they seal combustion gases as I didn't see a copper sealing washer or heat shield like a Mercedes has. I also didn't fully understand the gauge? you were using after the injectors were installed. Earlier you had gone through some related adjustments but then followed up with that spinning gauge. Could you please explain further? Thanks!

Sure, I'll make a video on the injectors and how they operate, seal, timing etc.:) I thought I had done a video on injectors, but turns out I haven't.:) Should be interesting.:)

Thanks for your answer referring to electronic fuel injectors. Maybe this is the answer I'm looking for, but I'm not sure because not understanding. My thoughts go to a friend using 2 stroke Jimmys in tugs and he had just upgraded one to four stroke Detroits. He told me this will allow him to operate without giving off black smoke in going hard from reverse to forward with max power and also burn less fuel overall. He said those modern engines injected up to 3 timed bursts of fuel as the piston rose on the compression stroke, not just at one point near TDC. Now I could have misunderstood him to, but I was wondering if this could improve a two stroke Jimmy in any way ?
@detroitgarage943013 күн бұрын
Yes, electronic fuel injection would definitely improve emissions from the 2-stroke Detroit's. Have a look at Achates apposed two stroke, very nice and meets current emissions.:)

Hypothericly if a guy had an old N. Laying about..... and decide to freshen it and went for new liner kits with the crosshead turbo pistons ......what turbo should he be on the look out for to go along with his project?

If it's a 4-53N I'd say HX40, Garrett T04E03 with stock to N75's.:)

Would advancing the timing offer any performance on these? That would be lowering the injector height correct? How much would it take to be noticeable?
@detroitgarage943014 күн бұрын
I'm going to do a dedicated video on the topic. I tend to run 1.47" and my truck likes that.:) Yes advancing the timing is lowering the injector height.:)

@@detroitgarage9430 Super and Thanks, looking forward to that video. I need to check my 2-53 JD crawler, probably hasn't be adjusted since the 1960s.
