Malik is one of my favorite characters from this game. The first time I played through it I thought Malik's death was scripted. I later found out it wasn't. I also found her dead body on a surgery table. In my second run I stocked up on lethal everything (shotgun upgrade, Typhoon buffs, 'nades) and killed every last one of those guys out of spite.

I see that this comment was posted 2 years ago, but if you still haven't, then play it. My friend gifted me this game in 2012 and I'm finally getting around to it, but I'm absolutely digging it. There's a lot of stuff to do and find, and you can play it however you want. The game supports your playstyle and rewards you regardless of what you choose. Story elements, conversations, and certain events change depending on what you do, though. It's very immersive. Of course, this is coming from someone who is still relatively early in the game (about the 20 minute mark of the run) but I am excited to see the rest (and watch the rest of the speedrun after I'm done!)

I died 18 times on the tutorial on easy... Imagine my fury when I was defeated by way of cutscene trigger. Just let the cutscene run if you die before the trigger in that type of situation.
