The west had taken its eye off the ball. So busy fighting orange man. Yet he's only part of the problem. The first thing is those darn printing presses. The usa only has such a massive carrier fleet because they have bled their own taxpayers white. The establishment then established the fleet and then had to pay for the upkeep. This is where they tripped up. Like the stupid lottery winner splurging the winning on a mansion and yachts. Having no prior experience with upkeep and running costs has put himself back to square one. The establishment of the west is so inept in the general world because all they know is the swamp. Born and raised by the incumbent swamp dwellers. Very very little actual experience in the real world. Now suddenly that real world is rearing its ugly head and they have absolutely no idea how to deal with the problem

@M W Would you trust a Russian insurance company to pay up if something went wrong? Should a port authority trust that they will pay liability if they damage another craft or some of the harbor's infrastructure? Other insurance companies want to know that you won't be doing anything irresponsible, like refusing a boarding and getting shot at by navies on the open seas. If they aren't concerned about that then they may not be the kind of insurer that ports will accept as legitimate.

Big fan of your work for years now and marine (re)insurance broker here. Nice report on the de-classification of the superyachts leading to them being uninsured due to breach of warranty. I suspect most sanctioned oligarch's superyachts are now uninsured and have been for a while, at least by western insurers, due to the sanctions and limitations exclusion clauses included in every policy which basically prevents insurers to pay any claim that would expose them to a sanction imposed by EU, UK, US, etc. Going around with such expensive toys without insurance is a major risk, especially for third parties that could be affected by the superyachts' operation. Not as easy as "self-insuring" the yacht. Most countries make the Protection & Indemnity (P&I) coverage compulsory for navigating their waters - that's the insurance that covers the liability for the use and ownership of the yacht - reasoning behind this being the pollution and environmental damage this vessels are capable of producing. Mind you, for superyachts, the limit of the P&I coverage is in the hundreds of millions of dollars per event region - that's just how big a claim in one single incident can be.
@avflyguy2 жыл бұрын
At the very least, they would have to provide a "Guaranteed Letter of Credit" for liability for millions of dollars (if they were to self-insure), but who's going to sign off on that? No way around the mess they are in even if trying to play shell games..

@lancer22042 жыл бұрын
Port of registration and certifying authority are two separate things. You could have your super yacht registered in ANY port, however, which insurer will touch something certified by Joe Random of Biloxi, Mississippi when Lloyds is the standard?
@poneill652 жыл бұрын
@@lancer2204 My point wasn't to do with Lloyds or NOT Lloyds as certifying authority,... it was in what way are any of these super yachts "Russian" as defined by the new Lloyds restrictions. They're not registered in Russia and their Russian ownership is often secret. If these boats are registered in Panama and managed by Cayman Island companies (with no other visible ownership), Lloyds sanctions don't apply. For a flag of convenience you need just a Shell corporation in one of this countries. This Shell corporation is not registered with the name of any Russian vessel owner. Everybody knows who's vessel it is and who pays for it, but most of the time it's very difficult to follow this line from one shell corporation to the next and next... Same with there numbers bank accounts. From one to there next and so on. When as example the Chelsea owner Abramowitch pay on of his players some "extra money" this money will see 4-5 different banks in different countries. You are right, but remember to make judgements on an individual basis. I have lived in a small starter home, never gone on vacations, never owned a new car. Never even had new furniture except once from 'floor model clearance'. I bought that starter house when the market was crashed and will be selling it for a massively higher price, and liquidating every other asset to move to Europe this year. Depending on how my new business venture goes, I'll be buying a boat, possibly nice enough to envy, in 3 to 5 years. It'll probably be from the 80s or 90s and some of the remodeling I'll do myself. People will look at my boat and assume I'm wasting money. But I'll be using her for charter, so much like buying a fancy house that you live in and run as a B-and-B, I'll be running a 'lifestyle business' where you make just enough profits to live a nicer lifestyle. The charters will only pay for the running/maintenance costs. Not all yacht owners are wasteful. I plan to make her green with solar and other alternative energy, and I found a good philanthropy group that lets you sign up to use your boat to study saving the oceans, endangered marine life, etc. Mega yachts are different, of course. I saw one last week, online, that had REAL silver flake paint on the whole ship, plus real gold flake paint on the huge radar mast. Not obscene enough, it also had a gas turbine, like a damn jet, that drank so much fuel per hour it made me angry. So I totally agree there is a level of pointless luxury that is morally wrong, when others starve and do without medical care (like I am right now, since Covid cost both income and insurance and I am stuck in the US for the moment). But, it's important not to assume guilt just because someone has something nice. They may have done without for many years to attain that. I'm not assuming you think that way, by the way. I just see a lot of comments lately that assume all yacht owners are part of the 1%, or comments from born weathly types callously caring more for yachts than refugees. It feels like two sides are forming, and both are posting pretty vitriolic things (eat the rich vs bootstraps). I guess I'd just like to inject a little nuance. My own family members will likely act like I 'won' a lottery, forgetting all the years they took 10k cruises, bought 50k cars, all on credit, while I have no debt (and shopped at thrift stores, before Covid!). Sorry for the long comment, but if this turns into a protracted global war, it will be between classes, not countries. @@OG_Wonder_Woman The difference between other superyacht owners and the Russian oligarchs is, they all made their fortunes when the USSR fell. They did so through cronyism and corruption, like Putin. None of them worked their way up from the bottom, none of them come from generations of wealth, since such things theoretically did not exist in communist Russia. So it is very easy to judge the oligarchs that own superyachts. These men are Putin's inner circle and have the most influence over him than anyone else in the world.

@@OG_Wonder_Woman Well there might be some cheap mega yachts on sale at government auctions so keep your eyes open. I own a kayak so that’s what I know about such things. I’ve had more than one person repeat the old adage that the day you buy a boat and the day you sell it are the two best days of the boating experience. I’m kidding of course. Good luck with your business venture and your boating goals. I wouldn’t worry too much about my opinion on the subject.

Just one question, the majority of these yachts are flagged in Cayman Islands or Marshall Islands, perhaps Bermuda sometimes (MY & SY A), so would they actually be considered Russian by LR?

I love your channel. I’m one of your new subscribers. My parents owned a 30m yacht when I was young, apparently you classed that as a super yacht as its longer than 25m 😜 We had a crew of 4 on board it was amazing, we used to spend almost three months a year on holiday navigating the Med. Those were the days. I’m now as middle class as it can get haha but your channel brings back a lot of memories as when at port I used to have good conversations with the crew from other yachts.

Service them mechanically? Sure. Fuel them? Definitely. Keep them in the opulent state they arrived in? Not likely. They will have to create a yard with the ability to work on these kinds of finishes and appointments... which given the wealth of the owners is certainly feasible. But without the ability to import materials and technology due to sanctions they will have a tough time. So they will be fitted out with Chinese tech and Russian materials... not really how they were designed or built.
@omarwilliams67292 жыл бұрын
@@simeon2851 Let them know. Like now Russia will start becoming industrial again. Once you have your own food and fuel you don't need any partners, especially The UE and USA. Russia will not be raking 1Billion per day off oil for the foreseeable future but trust me, The Chinese will eventually cave in and start using Russia's oil and natural gas, coal and titanium at a cost of 1.3Billion daily after a while. Their other exports such a banking, tourism etc will cave in but Russia will survive because other people will take the oil at a cheaper rate and fuck over their present contracts with other countries.

It's reasonable to surmise that they're all heading to Vladivostok, albeit in somewhat circuitous routes in in some cases, so that they can have that 'inspection' to gain recertification via the Russian agency. I imagine that, just as you alluded to, some way has been found for them to be granted temporary paperwork so that they can fuel up & provision for the crew enroute.
