Artifacts seem to be, in many instances but not all, the result of emergent elements in game design. Ie: elements not strictly dictated by the boundaries of the game's rules such as the social interaction between players in an mmorpg or the imagination/creation of a backstory/history for a player's created character and his/her deeds. These are simple examples, but the result is almost always an artifact of play. I was, at first, confused by the relativity of the two - mistaking them for equivalent terms from different spectrums (digital and physical) - as this was actually my first time learning about artifacts proper. Thanks, I learned a ton from this, the most weighted among them being that I still have so much to learn.

Ohhh that is fascinating! Memorable gaming sessions often do produce inside jokes and memes that live on. It's an awesome idea to turn those great experiences into actual mementos. :)

Interesting stuff. I am continuing my thesis work on digital hybrid tabletop games. Been thinking about some of these artifacts and how they can persist after games and be integrated into future games. Working with RFID/NFC/Bluetooth stuff right now and I think there could be a lot of room for crossover gameplay. Imagine hearing about the tales of your character in one game in another and maybe even running into them based on the information that the tech can learn about what happened in your previous gaming experience. Lots of cool new things out there and new innovations coming soon. For those interested in chatting more feel free to contact me. Will be developing our first product shortly.

@@DingoAteMeBaby : It is less something you can read and more experiments and world building and just overall impressions and learnings. I'm finishing up the WebGL build for a very basic vertical slice using QR Codes (since the pandemic hit I can't really send NFC tags to everyone). Working on a production version with a Kickstarter hopefully scheduled in 9-12 months from now.

@@StefanLopuszanski As long as the tech's knowledge and memory of my character are within my control and permissions, yeah this would be awesome. (unlike the current tech environment, in which we must willingly give up the right to control our data to use important services, when no countermeasures are taken into consideration) Otherwise, things could get all dystopian rather quickly.

Please, list more games that are designed around artifacts of play! This was very interesting, thanks

Every legacy game, like Clank Legacy or Gloomhaven. Roll and writes that use paper, like Cartographers or Welcome To. In Oath, the composition of the game's deck itself changes between sessions based on who wins and loses each past game. Even a game's scorepad can tell a story, as that is also an artifact of play.

This was an AMAZING talk. Simple, to the point and an interesting crossover between Game Design and Marketing (we as game designers really need some marketing knowledge). Thanks!
