Thank you for the very informative video. I have a young child (boy age 7) who has recently started to run with a group that promotes fitness and activity for kids. It’s not competitive just for fun and fitness. He is running a 1/4 mile race and he seems to enjoy it. My question, we were thinking of getting him involved with track and field as something to continue to keep him active. He is pretty fast but his form is needs work. What would you suggest for his age group to help work on improving running mechanics for sprinting? I don’t want him to develop bad habits. Thanks!

Vanita Moore these drills are great for anyone that wants to gain speed, and better their acceleration. You can actually do these drills 1-2x a week. The wall and arm drills are reps of 10, and are completed 10 times (you call out a number 10x). For the rapid fire it is 3 x 5 seconds. Then all of the drills 2-3 x for 15-20m. @coachwelly7 жыл бұрын
It depends on who you talk to. I recommend you don't do max velocity sprints 3 days a week, that would be a lot on your body. 2 max, and weight training you can execute 3 x a week. I have trained a few soccer athletes myself. You guys are the easiest to change, because you typically don't use your arms or lift your knees when running during soccer games.

How low should I stay in my acceleration phase? I’m fairly tall at 5’11 and I’m pretty much around a 45 degree angle, but I see other sprinters either go at a 60 degree angle or even 30 degrees. I know it’s mostly preference but I wanna know your thoughts. And how should I avoid “hunching” my back when I’m low? I try and keep my back straight but it’s hard because I feel like I’m gonna fall forwards lol
@coachwelly6 жыл бұрын
45 degrees for the most part is ideal. You avoid arching by making sure your hips are forward and not behind your center of mass. The almost falling forward could have a lot to do with that added with, just speculating,but you are probably not popping your knee forward, or you are just leaning too far forward.

I'm a 32yr old guy interested in taking up recreational sprinting to add to my routine. I'm recovering from peroneal tendonisis (ankle injury) and while I've been advised to stay away from anything which might place a load on my ankle, I'm looking at drills I can do in the meantime, while seated or on my back. I have resistance bands. Any tips? Thanks
@coachwelly7 жыл бұрын
There is a lot that you can do, but how long will it be before you can use your ankle again?

Hey I'm 13 years old and run 11.3 with sprint training and wanted to know if you think I should do weights and what I should do Also I need to work on acceleration
@coachwelly6 жыл бұрын
thats pretty good for a 13 year old. I would say for now do general body strengthening (legs. upper body and core). Also continue to work your acceleration.

Do you recommend sprinting after doing these drills or doing these will be good enough. COVID restrictions has made it tough to go out and do track work.
@coachwelly4 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you are doing for a workout. You can just work on these, or you could do a workout that involves sprinting, tempo/form running, etc.
@vishaalramesh74 жыл бұрын
@@coachwelly Yeah. I usually do fartlek, 100-200m repetition or just 80m,60m sprints.
@nitishsingla58216 жыл бұрын
Sir is morning running is efficient for good sprinting
@coachwelly6 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what you are doing. If you are simply getting a long run in, not so much.

Please tell me how can I make my steps more than 1.9 meters in the 100 meters ? With my respect to you 🙏
@coachwelly3 жыл бұрын
Its the force you put into the track. What you can do is set up wickets (see my max velocity video), and start doing your speed days over those. Also, start doing more Plyo metrics and get your leg strength stronger, and that will help. Hope that answers your question.

I’m just getting into sprinting (before I was doing cross country and I just wanted try sprinting) and I am having a hard time getting to strike with my forefoot rather than my mid foot which is what I’m used to doing now. Oddly is kinda tricky to correct it. What can I do to help?
@coachwelly3 жыл бұрын
When you do your drills, start with walking to get the idea. Now landing mid foot to fore foot isn't a problem, it's when you land on your heels. That is the problem.

How many times per week do you suggest I do these? I'm thinking of doing more things outside of track sessions since my times are slow and that bugs me (12.5, 26.1 - I'm 14 and it's my first season)
@coachwelly2 жыл бұрын
Just keep working. It's only your first year. 1-2 times a week is good.

I'm a 16 year old female and I've dealt with shin splints pretty much all season. Our very first track meet for the 100m my time was 14.11 and ever since I developed shin splints my time has been aroumd 14.34. I don't know rather it's just the shin splints that slowed me down or my technique. Do you have any tips or advice?
@coachwelly5 жыл бұрын
Do you have any video I can see. There could be several reasons.
@kattbandit56335 жыл бұрын
@@coachwelly unfortunately I don't but my coach has been saying it looks as if I'm in pain when I run and it's been preventing me from going 100% at track meets. I thought the problem might have been my running shoes so I got new ones that my coach approved of and it was getting better but I still couldn't go 100%. So he let me continue running the 4×1, and 4×4 but took me off the 4×2.
@coachwelly5 жыл бұрын
@@kattbandit5633 that could definitely be a part of the problem, but only part of the problem. I would need to see you run in order to give a true diagnosis.
