CAT Oil Filter

I went to CAT’s site and threw in the part # under filter lookup and it pulled it up: “396-4596: FILTER LUBE Brand: Cat” Other than that, like in your previous video, there is no other information such as Micron ratings, etc. Under Specifications, it simply states: “Specifications unavailable” Under Compatibility, it states: “We currently do not have compatibility information for this part.” Nevertheless, it prompted me to contact my local CAT dealer for price. Edit: Reply from CAT - “As you are aware, we have forwarded your feedback to our internal team. They'd like to inform you that the 396-4596 filter is supplied to Cat. For further information on filter ratings, please contact the local dealership.”

It’s almost impossible to get the 1R-1807 on a 5.9. The filter with an adapter hits the turbo drain. I had a adapter and a guy tried it, got it to work but had to reroute the turbo drain line for it to work. There is a shorter filter but the drain line still gets in the way. That filter I think is a cat filter but it’s a legacy filter, which means it’s made for cat to fit older equipment. It’s actually made by Baldwin, Donaldson, etc. Cat stopped using these in newer equipment because of the way they are manufactured. The ones like the 1R-1807 are made by Cat in the Indiana facility. They found that with stamping of the steel parts the shavings were magnetic and some always stayed with the filter. That why they started making their own. Lose 1 million dollar piece of equipment under warranty sucks. So they set out to make the absolute best filter they could.

A few years ago I went to the Cat Proving Grounds in Arizona, they gave us a tour, education, being a HD Mechanic in Sales, Rentals at a Cat dealer I was shocked at some of the presenters, Eg. " The planet any has 4 planet gears". Couldn't even see the pin bosses on the outside cover, they are just trained brain washers, and I'm still a Cat guy. I ended up in a lab with oil stuff, it was interesting, got to see what they did for their research, they told us that their filters come from other mfgs. that only build filters, yes Baldwin, Donaldson, and filter media is made by only a few, as it is trade secret, I've used their filters wherever I can, just being a Vat fan, trained by a x Cat instructor in my apprenticeship I understand why the are world leaders, all try to copy, but fdll short, yes JD, Hitatchi, Liebeihr come close, each has its niche. Having sold Cat at dealer, it's nice to see well maintained equipment with 20k hrs still going strong.

That cat oil filter is basically a Baldwin BT7349 just a yellow or red can for the 5.9 and 6.7 cummins.

The CAT 1r-1807 and 1808 are metal material inside the filter

During the pandemic lots of filters where being made by other companies just so they could fill there inventory. The last air filter I installed on a semi which was a fleet gard but was made by fram. Even the parts guy was surprised when we opened the book.

Yeah I discovered that on a napa filter I got recently. It had an orange piece of paper inside saying It was made by a European company.

Looking at this there’s two different sizes of oil filters one fits the 6.7 the other fits something else. And it moot.

The purpose of the other oil filter was to show what a "true" Cat oil filter should look like. I grabbed it because we had an overstock of it at the time.

So I just bought the 07.5 6.7 Cummins... And looking into the filters.. And I come across the 396 also... Good info.. But so do you know what cat filter will work.. Or just fleetguard or Donaldson... Getting a little irritated lol looking for the best one. We get lied to, to much from companies... Thanks

To be honest I don't know sorry. I don't believe Cat has another filter that will fit factory. I know guys will heavily modify to run Cat filters but I don't know how they do it. I run the fleetguard 16035 or the donaldson blue 7349. I run them for 8-11k with no issues and the filter still always has plenty of life when I cut them open afterwards.

Do you happen to know the part number for the Cat direct replacement oil filter, that Black Market Performance sells for the Powerstroke 6.7L. I called them and asked, the guy laughed and hung up on me.

I've never heard of one for anything other than the cummins without adapters

@@Jewalston The guys I worked with used adapters to fit the filters they wanted. They all ran duramax no Powerstroke. We ran donaldson or oem for the 6.7 powerstroke on our service trucks.

Not without heavy modifications. No way it would fit. I just used that filter as demonstration to show what a true CAT filter looks like.

They may be made by baldwin, But they would be made to Caterpillar specs. If Its not viable for CAT to make a lower end filter for smaller diesel engines, Then they sub out the work to a company that has the equipment. Why buy twice the kit when a little negotiation with another company can produce a filter on license? If it meets filtration requirements, then its as good as.
