I use red n tacky for everything now with no issues. I service a large fleet of 14k lb trailers along with a ton of equipment. I used to use the xtra hd tubes but couldn't find them for a couple years. It doesn't matter how much better it is if you cant find it. My thinking is if i want wash out protection ill just use their marine version. I agree with not mixing them and flushing out any other type of grease that is in there. What is most important is that people keep up on it. No grease is going to last forever.

I was a huge fan of red n tacky until the cold months. I started using Schaeffer's 219 and it's hands down the best grease I've ever used. Incredible life, doesn't sweat in the heat and doesn't lose pumpability in the cold

Which would be the best grease for utility trailer bearings? And why
@TylerTheFieldServiceTech Жыл бұрын
They're both rated for wheel bearings. I've never put the Xtra heavy duty in just due to lack of product availability. I used to run the lucus red n tacky in my hotshot trailer bearings 10-14k with no issues.

The green x-tra hd is not as easy to find as it once was. Auto Zone showed it in stock online so i just ordered ten 14oz tubes $10 a tube. I've used it for years and have no reason to switch.
@deanl24278 ай бұрын
I am having the same issue, you can't find it anywhere. Most major auto parts stores list it, but it's out of stock. I am looking for an alternative. Menards always had a shelf full of it and even they don't have it readily anymore. Unfortunately, this is the main grease I trust for trailer wheel bearings.
@scootypuffjr.8 ай бұрын
@deanl2427 The one I ordered ended up being out of stock. I found a compatible replacement though. It's the same polyurea base and it's even the same color green. It's from John Deere. I don't have it in front of me right now and i cant remember the exact name of it, but JD has a grease that matches the Lucas.
@deanl24278 ай бұрын

It's the John Deere SD Polyurea Grease. They claim it's suitable for wheel bearings and high temp. They claim it's best performance range is -15° to 380°f.

I have a question for you. I work as a detailer and the recommendation is to change out the grease that the mfg uses as it's not that great. Manyrecommend using the Red and tacky grease I would like your recommendation on what type of grease to use in my Dual Action Polisher. Also if you would recommend another brand besides the Lucas brand. Thank you
@TylerTheFieldServiceTech2 ай бұрын
@btbd2785 Most people use red & tacky due to availability & and cost, and it's a good mid level all-purpose grease but absolutely awful and useless in cold weather. I personally use Schaeffer's grease. My grease of choice is their 219 or 221 grease. It's probably the best greases you can buy on the market, followed by Caterpillar Grease products.
@btbd27852 ай бұрын
@@TylerTheFieldServiceTech Thank you. I am glad I was able to watch this video before I ended up going with the red and tacky I actually was also looking at schafgers grease but wasn't sure which one I would benefit from. Thank you for the recommendations.

@btbd2785 Absolutely, Schaeffer's Lubricants are the best products on the market, in my opinion. If you buy in bulk directly from a rep, it's worth it for the price difference. I can get the grease for like 5-6 bucks a tube when buying in bulk. Their oil is still pricy in bulk, but the oil results can't be beat. The oil will outlast the filters

Never mix unknown greases. Even a couple of shots will cause both types of greases to liquefy and run out of the bearings. It has never happened to me in 45 years, but a friend of mine did and said he only needed to add a little and once they were mixed together, it was as if they turned to oil and ran out. That was in the early 1980's and even back then we thought it was false and for what could possibly go wrong. He did it and we found out. His mistake was a great learning lesson for me as I was in the repair industry.

Which is better for CV Joint repacking? Also, would you recommend one of these 2 greases over OEM CV Joint grease? I'm cleaning and rebooting my CV axles on my 09 Chevrolet Tahoe, and I want to make sure I use the best option when it comes to grease repacking. If there is a better option for longer life, I would like to know.
@TylerTheFieldServiceTech8 ай бұрын
Xtra heavy duty would be the best option since it's a sealed component. I would probably use OEM in your situation. I don't feel the Xtra heavy duty has enough tack, but also, the red n tacky has a shorter life. Also the Xtra heavy duty is prone to liqifying under humidity and heat way too quick in my opinion. Personally, I use Schaeffer's 219 grease for litterally everything. It's literally the best grease on the market. Schaeffer's 221 is also a great option for grease. They hold up in extreme heat and flow easy in extreme cold. Life is off the charts, and the protection is unmatched. I have over 15k on trailer wheel bearings, and life is still almost new. 219 is an incredible product. Red n tacky would be shot by 15k every time almost.

@@TylerTheFieldServiceTechis the Shaeffer’s compatible with rubber? What is the base?

@@TylerTheFieldServiceTech I used some of that Lucas green grease in my lawnmower spindles. Wasn’t sure how it might affect the rubber seals? I was also getting some work done on the mower so I went ahead and had them install the 2 other spindles I had. I told them not to grease the bearings because I already did. But they ended up pumping some kind of translucent grease into them.. assuming it might be silicone based due to the color, but I can’t be sure. No idea if it’s compatible with the green that was in there. Smdh. As the saying goes, if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Unfortunately I’m still learning the hard way on occasion.

Lithium is not the thickener. It’s the grease base type. Molybdenum sulfide (Molly) is the thickener and also is great at prolonging the lithium grease. It drastically mitigates friction and harsh impacts. Also great at preventing moistures from sticking around. Some gear heads buy the Molly powder and mix it with complex lithium grease. Which is basically what red and tacky is. It’s more convenient to allow Lucas oil to make it.😁
@jSlay9118 ай бұрын
This is incorrect. Lithium is the thickener. Moly is an extreme pressure additive.

Wuat about me? I live in a warm climate. I have red and tacky in everything including ball joints. The boots are full of red and tacky. How can i flush them out to use a different base like the xtra heavy duty grease.
@TylerTheFieldServiceTech Жыл бұрын
Depending on the design, they usually have a weep hole or are made to leak before blowing the boot if you over fill them or want to flush them. Honestly, I would just start adding in the grease you want. It won't hurt anything in that component. It's not put under extreme load or heat pressure like a bearing.
@bryanmontgomery4050 Жыл бұрын
Do NOT mix them!! It will 100% cause bearing failure!!! Lithium complex and polyuria thickeners are NOT compatible!!!!!
@TylerTheFieldServiceTech Жыл бұрын
I specifically advised against it. That's exactly why I said flush the grease out and replace it with all the same type. Also, I said don't mix together in a bucket and then use it. Only in an emergency would I mix the grease. If the bearing is already burning up, it's already screwed at that point. You're trying to keep it cooler.
@garyradtke3252 Жыл бұрын
I think your wrong about electrical connectors. The grease is used for water resistance and anti corrosion especially in salt water situations such as marine or in areas that salt their roads. Mechanical sealing is almost impossible to maintain especially with extreme temp changes and pressure spray such as road spray from the tires. As far as flushing out the old grease I agree. I was told for years that when greasing u-joints and suspension and steering parts not to break the seal but that instruction always bothered me. One time in an update class when the instructor made that statement I asked this question. Grease doesn't evaporate or magically disappear right? He answered no. So I asked if that's the case then how do we get more grease in or remove the old grease with wear particles without breaking the sealing of the part? His answer was I don't think anyone ever raised that point! I have never heard "don't break the seal" from this manufactures classes again.
@TylerTheFieldServiceTech Жыл бұрын
Marine and salt water is something I don't work with. In the OEM manuals, they usually say "do not apply grease" or "a little bit is okay" Grease does create resistance in electrical connections. However, that is better than the connections being filled with so much garbage from not having any grease barrier that it destroys them. Also, grease prevents the plastic connections from siezing up and having to be broken apart to be opened. I worked on caterpillar for a while and they were very much against grease. They use connections that keep about 99% of garbage out. Just spray the connector with 70% isopropyl alcohol before pulling apart and it comes apart easy about 80% of the time.
