The most beautiful fact about this song is how it's written to make the listener the center of harmony. It's all unison for the first minute-and-a-half of song, giving the listener plenty of time to learn and sing along. And then, right about 1:31, the main melody disappears, the vocals split into a harmony that leaves YOU in harmony with everyone else. Literally. This is one of the most meaningful musical metaphors I've ever experienced.

"Don't you forget that you are loved." This lyric right here. More than every other lyric in this song, this speaks to me. I suffer with chronic depression and anxiety. I recently suffered a nervous breakdown after getting scammed out of all of their money. I've been on the verge of ending it all quite a few times. I've always felt alone because of being autistic and, as a result, I've dealt with crushing loneliness and the resulting fear that I might not ever get in an relationship of my own. I've always believe nobody loves me, even though I know there are plenty of people around me, family and friends, who do love and care for me, genuinely. It's just hard for me to convince myself of it sometimes due to my circumstances. Every now and again, I listen to this song, hear those words and I just start to cry. It reminds me to not forget that I really am loved, that life is worth living and fighting for, and that the most important thing is to love myself.

@@danjones5047 Be careful. Words like this and promise of a better future can actually make the issue worse. It's better to train coping mechanisms for the "now" -- talking about the future is a bad thing a lot of the time because it simply means there will be more of everything. Telling truly depressed or suicidal people "it will get better" isn't helpful because that means they have to continue another day (or more) before it will get better and facing the reality that they need to face another day can easily push them over the edge. My point being that the "shit life" now doesn't make anything in the future worth it and depressed/cynical/nihilistic/etc people don't believe those promises either because the person saying them have no idea what the future holds.

Had the incredible pleasure of hanging out, getting to know and singing with Devin almost 30 years ago when we were recording all the background vocals for Sex & Religion. Devin has always had THE MOST POWERFUL voice I can think of. We would joke that he could "gargle glass" and still sing anything he wanted. Of course, back then we were both still in our 20's. Devin may have actually been 19? :). Devin, you were incredible then and you are incredible now. This arrangement, groove, melody, writing, passion and performance is nothing short of amazing. I am not surprised. Hope to see you again someday.

This stuff is far too complex for the average dingus you pass in the street. I love the fact that i get it and 98% of the world doesn't. Dude is 20 years minimum ahead of his time with this sound and unfortunately most innovators go unnoticed, its the next 3 people to do the same thing that get noticed. Look at mc5, stooges, patti fuckin smith for christ sake nobody even onows who she is or how much they should be thanking her for inspiring every damn avant garde artist since 1968. He'll be stuck in this bubble until a documentary comes out when he's 67 years old. Its a sad state of affairs indeed.

Kinda goes for the message of the song, elephants are known for their memory and it's about remembering and understanding our place in the universe and how everything is connected. "Remember when we were young" and showing the gorilla just drives the point home (we're all in this together and we should remember we come from the same source and work together).

There are only a few songs that write about a psychological inspiration like this one. In this song there aren't any coincidences. Everything is well thought through. Devin had a purpose and he successfully brought it across. Every person should listen to it and read the lyrics. If you are down on the ground, this can help you to get up, raise your head and start to walk up the steep path called life. Well done Devin.
