► DEWALT 20V MAX XR Hammer Drill DCD996: amzn.to/2Qwk4Lv
► Bosch DSB5013P 13-Piece Daredevil Spade Bit Set: amzn.to/2QuANyZ
The New DEWALT 20V XR Brushless 1/2" Hammer Drill/Driver with POWER DETECT Technology (Model DCD998) has up to 29% more power than its predecessor (Model DCD996) in use with a 5.0Ah battery. This new DEWALT Hammer Drill achieves over 1072 UWO, has three speeds, 11 clutch settings, 38,250 BPM, and weighs in at 3.5 pounds without the battery.
DEWALT's secret to the new power is newly developed electronics in tools called POWER DETECT Technology that can identify the battery the tool is paired with and adjust power output accordingly. This technology helps the battery and tool mate up to perform the best. For example, this Hammer Drill will know the difference between the capabilities of the 8.0Ah XR battery and the 5.0Ah XR battery and adjust the power of the tool accordingly. If you are thinking that most tools do this already, that is not true. Most tools will perform slightly better with a higher power battery attached, but they will not significantly increase the power of the tool like the new POWER DETECT tools will. The POWER DETECT will also lower the power of the tool to save batteries that will not supply the full load-bearing capabilities.
Unfortunately, the FlexVolt batteries do not raise the performance of the power detect tools above the standard 5.0 Ah XR battery.
DEWALT DCD998 Vs DCD996
The New DEWALT DCD998 is an improved model of the DCD996. The drills are almost identical from the outside. There are some differences on the inside that include the motor and other electronics. Also upgraded on the DCD998 is the auxiliary handle. The handle still slides on in a similar fashion, but the handle is much longer adding more control and safety to the drill. The LED light is still set up to be a work light if needed and is super bright and very useful.
This drill is still very effective at hammer drilling concrete, but it is still also very loud, just like the older model.
If you are looking at the DCD998 and comparing it to the cost of the DCD996 and wondering if it is worth the upgrade, it is, if you use the drill to its max. The new auxiliary handle is very nice and worth any extra the drill would cost if you use it. Many people never use a drill to the extent that they would use the handle and in that case, the DCD996 is everything they would need if there is a cost difference. To get the power in the drill you need a large battery. The 8.0 Ah battery is the size of a large FlexVolt and that is not something we would always want to be attached to our drill. On the other hand, if you are doing work where you need or want the extra power, that large battery would not make much difference to you.
Many people will love this drill for the above and beyond power it can supply. Many others would never need that power. Either way, there is no doubt DEWALT is taking their 20-volt line to a new level of performance with this new technology.

Thanks for making this video. I purchased a DCD998 yesterday and the chuck seems a little strange to me. I realize it’s supposed to ratchet as you close the jaws, but is it supposed to make an odd ratcheting sound while opening the jaws? Thank you. UPDATE (FIXED): The chuck was making a weird clicking sound when I turned the sleeve either way. I put a bit in the chuck, tightened the sleeve fully, then backed it off slightly, then removed the bit, and the chuck sleeve operated smoothly. No mention of any of this in the manual.

That is really interesting. That 8.0 XR battery has only 10 - 21700 cells. It outperforms the 9.0 Flexvolt that has 15 - 21700 cells. Dewalt must has updated the electronics in the new 8.0 XR batteries to draw more current from the cells for improved performance. I wonder If they will do the same with new Flexvolt batteries. In theory, the 9.0 and 12.0 Flexvolt batteries should outperform any other battery Dewalt makes.
@thehhoff69
@thehhoff69 4 жыл бұрын
The "NEW" 9.0 Flexvolts have 21700 cells, the "older" ones (pre 2019) used Sanyo 20700 cells. A dead give away is the silver tabs (heat sinks) on top of the battery. "New" 21700 based batteries have the tabs, "old" 20700 based batteries do not. I could be wrong, but it looks like the 9.0 they are using is an "old" one with 20700 cells. That is why they are not getting the same power boost. @WorkshopAddict - can you confirm?

It’s got to be a new motor and electronic control system. It can draw more power out of the battery, which is designed to deliver more power, likely with a lower internal resistance. So both are required. I’d be interested to know whether dewalt will be improving their other size batteries, and their other tools to these new standards.

Michael C i had the 6 1/2 for quite some time and I really liked the size, rather more than on the 7 1/4“, but I believe the 7 1/4“ is already on its 3 iteration also now with the newest model having power detect, and for all those who like the smaller size they‘ve made the atomic style saw. But you‘re right, it would be nice to see an updated brushless right sided motor, 6 1/2 circ saw which would be more competition to all those compact and subcompact makita, Milwaukee or even the small hikoki saw‘s out there
@michaelc7283
@michaelc7283 4 жыл бұрын
@@Marvin-uv6cg Yes, I do like the 6 1/2 for it's size. What would be nice is to see a 7 1/4 blade on the left side. Not that fake rear handle worm drive. Plus that saw is way too bulky. Just make one like the top handle size. That's a good enough. Don't get me wrong the rear handle might be good for construction guys who can use it for raft tip cutting or to cut plywood at 4 feet wide. For the rest of us the smaller size works great.

The DCD996 is 5 years old and has been the standard for many companies to beat. We have done tests where we dropped it in a 5 gallon bucket of water, with the battery, filled it with sand, put it in an excavator bucket of rocks and dumped it out over and over. It lived and still worked like new. Both the 996 and 998 are built to last and I feel the 998 is going to be rock solid as it is basically a 996 with a better motor and a few new electronics.

I have been using my dcd991 for about a year now, once or twice a month to drill multiple holes in 1/2" thick 5 ton truck frame (close to spring steel) and the front bearing is very loose even with low miles on the drill. It is very hard on the drill to go though frame like this, sometimes i even drill through double wall frame 10 ton tandem chassis frame thats a real treat. My 991 is out for repair but this 998 really interests me. I bet it could knock a few teeth out, my 991 has come pretty close a few times. Hi Brian, I know this video was out awhile back, but I have watched it several times, and I did hit the ‘Like’ button, but not sure if you compared the results between the 8.0 and the 6.0? I am referring to the same size battery, with the 21700 cells, but 6.0 Amp hours, vs. the 8.0 Amp hour battery that comes with the Power Detect kit. Simply put, will a person only be able to benefit using the 8.0 battery? I have not purchased the kit, but I do have the 6.0 high capacity batteries, and I think they are some of DeWalt’s best, IMO. They say ‘Made in Japan’ on the bottom of the casing, which i found interesting. I’m gonna watch this video again. Good Video, and Thanks! Peace

Just that 9.0ah FlexVolt battery cost $219.00 and the whole DCD998 Power Detect hammer drill Kit with a 8.0ah battery , fast charger , and bag is $275.00 , so I would buy the Kit instead of buying a F.V. 9.0ah bat. for my old dcd996 just to try and get a little bit more power out of it. Still Love the Video though ....👍🛠🖖

I know I'm 2 years too late commenting on this video, but the 998 and 999 are barely an upgrade of the 996. I haven't taken them apart and looked at the internals, but the fact of the matter is there is only a marginal power increase with the more expensive models. Take the nice new handle off of the 998 and put it on the 996 along with a 4.0Ah high output slim battery and you've got yourself one heck of a drill for a much lower price.

You need to test it with a 21700 based DCB609. Based on the lack of heat sinks on top of the battery, it looks like your DCB609 is a pre-2019 20700 based battery. Also, your DCB206 is a older 20700 based model (the side label has in small yellow font "6.0Ah" vs. new 21700 based DCB206's large white font "6Ah", just like the 8Ah). It's still a good review, but not quite apples to apples unfortunately.

After doing some research it is possible the 9ah you used in the video was an older 9ah that actually had 20700 cells instead of 21700 so you didnt get the same power boost. So it is possible with the current and some older 9ah depending on date code would get the power boost and possibly slightly more then the 8ah because it has more cells. And then 12ah i believe are all 21700. This is all jus theory not actually tested

I though all 9ah flexvolts use the 20700 cells, like in the 6ah 20v max batteries. You need the 12ah for the 21700, the same cells in the new 8ah or the 4ah compact batteries

Wrong. Both 9&12ah battery are 21700 cells same as are soon furthcoming 15ah battery as well. Its all about the electronic inside, not the cells.

Two words "plenty of Torque" kzbin.infoUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv well I guess that's three. Nice upgrade from current setup. Has belt clips, I don't think I will be using those. Driver and drill were bigger than what I expected but it is an upgrade from the current setup. For the money I would say that this is a great setup for Professionals and DIY/Weekend warriors.

@AaBB-ks6oc

The Flexvolt 9.0 in this video has 20700s. Look at the top of the battery. There's no metal tabs showing along the rail which means it was Made in 2017 or early to mid 2018. Before the 21700 update. Dewalt probably didn't(or couldn't) add a power detect identifier for any of the older 20700 packs. Which is pretty dumb considering they can all put out just as many or more amps than the XR 8.0s. This new drill is pretty awesome because the 996 was already awesome. But the whole new Dewalt battery hierarchy is a terrible mess for the average joe. And people were ragging on Milwaukee's battery hierarchy for being confusing, lol.

@@joeframer9642 1) the parts between both models are still made to the exact same QA standards. That's the only thing that really matters when the argument is focused on quality and not morality. 0 evidence to suggest that anything significant about the DCD996 is Made in America anyways. The chuck is German, the motor/electronics are 99% Chinese and the bearings/gears are definitely Chinese. (AvE shreds the 60V "Made in America" compressor and it clearly has Chinese-made bearings and components if you watch closely) 2) I'm pretty sure most Chinese people are generally happy to have a job assembling DCD998s too. Considering the alternatives would be subsistence farming or just straight up death. Do you even know what was happening in China before Nixon visited Mao? It wasn't pretty. Most people agree that the Chinese government/CPC are bad. But let's not let nationalistic BS and marketing wank get in the way of the facts either.
