The first tool I ever truly loved was a SkilSaw Mag 77. My father (whom inspired me to get into the trades and still work with today) gave me one when I was still a “green” framer. It was about 20 years old and absolutely beat to hell, but it worked perfectly. I still own that saw even though it has, sadly, since been retired. I have always been a bit nostalgic (and admittedly biased) towards worm drive saws, but one thing that no one can take away from them is their pure power and durability. While I have always had an affinity for worm drive saws, they do have their drawbacks, namely, a cord. When DeWalt introduced their new DeWalt FLEXVOLT 7-1/4” Cordless Worm Drive Style Saw, I absolutely jumped on the opportunity to give it a work out in the field.

Framed two additions (1100, and 800 sq ft) and one tree house(150sq ft) by myself last spring-summer. This saw, the dewalt cordless framing gun, three 6ah batteries, and one charger was all I needed.

I’m a contractor and use the flexvolt circular saw almost daily. Dewalt has completely eliminated the need for a cord on the jobsite. These tools a truly revolutionizing the construction trade. I have only used the dewalt flexvolt saw primarily so I don’t know if anyone else makes anything comparable. All I can say is after using the flexvolt saws I have no reason to try anything else. Yes I do frame. I have found that on an average day two 6 ah batteries get you through the day just fine. Even though one of the batteries will take an hour and a half to charge, they still usually outlast the charging time. The only time I have had to use more than two batteries is if I’m ripping 2x material in large quantities. Other than that scenario two 6ah bats do great. I highly recommend it, you definitely won’t regret it and you won’t even like the idea of using a corded saw again.

Hi Rob, I actually gave this Dewalt cordless worm drive a test run at a local tool show in october im a big Dewalt fan, to the extent that i swapped out most of my Milwaukee tools for Dewalt, that said, i wasn't crazy about the balance of the saw, i felt it was bottom light because of the magnesium shoe. When you're cutting 2x10 rafters, you want that saw firmly planted on the material. other than that I was very impressed with the power and quality of the saw. Its amazing how cordless tech is evolving. Mike

After owning this saw for a few weeks and using it, the safety switch thing really isn't that bad on this saw. I've made a few comments to the negative, but honestly it works pretty okay. Plus, the blade guard is made so a pencil will fit just right to lock it open, like some people do. I'm guessing Dewalt knows people jam a pencil in the guard, so a safety switch is probably a good idea.

Thanks for posting Rob,I own this saw and have been using it several months now framing homes in Ontario,Canada.I like it,no cord and I have 3 batteries available so it cuts the use of the generator.Same thing said, I dont like the safety button at all,just not used to it.The saw will not replace my worm drive but its my go to saw now, just for the freedom of no cord.I enjoy your videos and reviews.

Great review from out in the field. The rate that the cordless tools are improving is astounding. Extension cords dangling all over the job site will be a topic of nostalgia. Perhaps for third party reviews, TBB could post a review guide to help field users create great reviews such as this one.

An excellent saw, top-notch addition to the flexvolt family. I have many of them including the circular saw which I do not like that much b/o the blade placement on the "wrong side". But this one rocks! I also bought the DWS5100 12" rip guide which I used recently in this saw to bevel rip 16' & 18' long 2x material. Killer combo, faster and truer than a table saw. This saw has power to spare! I got mine at $339.99 with charger, two 9AH batteries and a bag. It was on Black Friday sale! ...Lucky me... Just to add this; I also disengaged the safety button but will not ignore safety though.

I've been using this for a few months now, and my 6 1/2" fuel saw is now only for cutting Durock. I mounted a vac attachment to it for dust removal. I also miss the worm drive saws with the left blade and pure power, and this DeWalt is the closest thing out there that I have tried. I will probably never try the Makita, because I have never been a fan of the brand and if I get to the price point they are at, I choose Bosch.

I have seen plenty comments about the safety switch. I have the flexvolt circular saw. I took the handle apart and removed the switch. I'm sure dewalt doesn't want to know this, but it is much more user friendly now. I make sure not to store the saw with a battery on it. All that said, figure out how to remove the switch or disengage it.

Lots of dislike for the safety switch. It is good to have a voice that can get back to DeWalt for products. After more consideration, it is obvious why a safety switch was a good idea. What workers do not want is any mechanism that slows them down. My idea for a solution is to use the same safety that is found on their jigsaw, the DeWalt DCS331. It's a saw. Has a battery. Has a sharp blade. Obviously people don't always set the saw down and take out the battery/blade after every use. But this switch is on/off not 'press each time"

I’ve had this saw for about a year now and it’s the most powerful battery operated saw I am aware of. And like a wormdrive, it’s also heavy. Weight is pretty similar to a Mag77. Comparing it to a Mag77 is like comparing a gas engine to a diesel. The DeWalt has more horsepower, while the Mag77 has more torque. One of the biggest flaws IMO is the lack of an LED light. Most of the time I don’t use this saw, as it’s a little too big and heavy for the kind of work I do, but for building a deck or something similar it would be my first choice.

Bought the saw yesterday morning, took it back this morning. It definitely has plenty of power! I could not feel a difference between it and my Skill Mag 77 regarding power. Problem is the weight, width and lack of shoe width. It is about 1lb heavier than my Skil but feels a couple pounds heavier. The width also seems very wide compared to the Skil which is where the shoe width comes in to play. For a saw that wide it would have been nice to have a shoe as wide as the Dewalt right side blade. Its not a big problem with sheathing but ripping a 2x4 or 2x6 especially on a 45 it was a hard to feel if the shoe was flat on the board. I guess it just doesn't feel like the saw is centered on the shoe because the motor sticks out so far to the right of the shoe. Bought the smaller 7 1/4" Flexvolt. I'll have to see if I can get used to the right side blade.

Not yet. I have some 20 volt DeWalt and like them , but not necessarily better than Makita. So this purchase would be the start of a battery system. I will have some 2 1/2" insulated metal panels to cut. And the Makita's 2 9/16" cut depth would be best for that. Also the Makita 10" DSMS dual sliding miter saw looks to be something I should own . So the batteries and charger would be compatible. I will be milling my lumber myself and will be joisting with full 2"×10" as I need all the 2x12s I can make for rafters. ( Gambrel roofs) . Thank you for the reply. Rural Alaska is far behind the times on these new tools.

So I've watched a ton of reviews of this saw and the Makita counterpart. This saw looks like it can cut faster than the Makita. One of my findings in watching the videos that I've never really thought about would come into play about these new saws is a dust shoot. If you watch the ripping videos out there of these two saws you notice that the Makita is really being bogged down because of saw dust build up. I've also seen posts with the two 6AH batteries on the makita that it actually has more power output than the Dewalt. So here is my question, Why do traditional worm drives and the Makita don't have dust shoots? The dewalt does and it seems to make a huge difference in cutting speed. My favorite Circ saw of all time is the corded Dewalt worm drive, the fit and finish and power of that saw is awesome...But now a days no reason to be tethered to cords since you can get more power output it seems from batteries. You would think all new saws would have some kind of dust extraction from the blade to conserve power and up performance. So my question is why do traditional worm drives and the new Makita don't have dust shoots and this saw for some reason does????

Rob, My Mag 77 is now connected to a Parzi Beam Cutter. Probably gonna leave it that way. Cause these battery saws are finally holding their own. For me, different from these other guys is that I too have gone pretty much cordless. Except,,, I use Makita! Not gonna get into a deal about which is better. I use their twin 18v Rear handle framer. I tried Both the Yellow and Teal saws ,,,, and I have tons of Yellow Tool since the 90's,,,, but ,,, For me? Teal saw, is More Accurate and Fits my hands better... By the way, Your Guys tried and liked the Rear handle Teal saw too and You did a Whole Video on the Teal Saw twin 18v rear handle saw. I still haven't counted the number of cuts I'm getting. But I can tell you that I'll go 2 days of Heavy Use before Charging the two 18v 5 amp hr batteries and I carry 6 or 7 of the 5 amp hr batteries on the truck. Thanks and Great Video as usual.

I have this saw and it’s great , I got 2 batteries but both batteries 9ah did not last longer than 2 weeks before they stopped charging, they warrantied them with no problem but wondering if anyone else has problems with these batteries and if their batteries are reliable

That is a pro. We find ourselves doing things that the average Joe has no business doing. After 25 years of using a circular saw at least 5 days a week it is an extension of my hand. It takes at LEAST a year before one has total control of a commercial grade saw.

So I'm currently on the Milwaukee fuel platform and own the 2731. This saw has served me well but the saw does bind from time to time and still doesn't have the power of a skill saw or my sidewinder Dewalt. I also never loved the 2731 because the foot plate would always bind for some reason never could understand that. The reason the 2731 was so awesome though was its been out for 5 years now, it was a game changer. Milwaukee where you at???? I'm going to frame out a basement soon and going to upgrade to one of these rear handle saws. The Makita or the Dewalt? I hate the idea of flexvolt another battery platform.....I havn't tried the Makita or the Dewalt. From the videos I've seen the flexvolt seems to have more power but not sure if that is true or not. Wonder if someone can answer this question? The other thing I don't like about the dewalt is most tools the battery hangs off. On this saw the battery is in an enclosure where all kinds of crap can get into it, even if you left this saw in the rain on a jobsite for say 5 minutes it could get water in it or something. I just don't feel that design is a great idea. The Makita also seems to have more metal and seems to be built better. The other reason i'm leaning towards the Makita is the new chainsaws that just came out look awesome on the x2 platform. I've pretty much made my mind up on this but not sure if anyone can comment on the power of the Makita and the Dewalt. Also if Milwaukee is going to build a rear handle saw?

makita is a great saw. can't go wrong at all. milwaukee doesn't seem to push many carpentry tools like dewalt n makita either they stick with plumbing and all that. i started as a milwaukee fan and became a makita fan. still use milwaukee. also use dewalt and few other but makita is great. flex volt is great as well but one thing is the highest amp flex volt battery is only 3 amp/ hour on 60v tools. so u get loads of power but the run time on this saw doesn't come close to the makita. u can get 12 amps in the makita with 2 6.0 and go all day basically , odd day u might need more juice if ur going hard but. also a huge thing is the makita has very good water protection. have not seen or heard anything on the dewalt on that but makita has the XPT line and that saw is one of the tools. i use it in snow and haven't had any issues

Although they classify this saw as a framing saw can it be used on more finer pieces to wood using T40 or T60 blades without too much damage to the blade or the wood? I'm a noob when it comes to these saws so I'm curious to know this.

The problem with the safety switch is very real and don't come next nature , is still bothers me very much , is painful if you have short cut to do for a long time and you have to push that button , they could use the same button as one from the planer .

Can anybody tell me why (most all) the non worm Drive Style framing saws have the blade on the Right....? So hard to use for right hander especially if using with a square.... WHY...

Carter Johnson If they did it as a left blade saw the motor would have been in your site line and because the original design was the cheapest way to make it. If they made it a left side saw the cost would have been much more with a universal motor and they would have had to extend the drive system further and increase wear and tear on the drivetrain.

Carter Johnson Right handed carpenter here with over 30 years of building experience, right hand blade saws are safer to use ie when carrying the saw the motor is near your right leg, not the blade side and they are easier to use,you can hold the timber with your left hand and cut with your right and the sawdust blows far away to your right and the majority of the base plate is on the desired stock making more accurate cuts including bevel cuts .99% of the saws sold in the world have RIGHT HAND BLADES for these reasons. I have no problem cutting accurately with a right hand blade .

@@ConcordCarpenter and it comes with a 12ah battery and runs on 18v. Id imagine that you'd get much better runtime on that compared to the flexvolt running on 60v. I have the dewalt and it eats up my 9ah battery especially if i have to rip some 2x. Just cutting 2x4 for length its good. Im still within dewalts 90 day satisfaction guarantee and might be sending it back. This new Milwaukee coming out looks like its going to be a game changer

As a carpenter and a GC we use cordless tools unlike any other trade. With batteries and tools a 5 piece and 3 batteries is going to be way above 1k.

The Makita is on our job site and performing exceptionally well - we love it! While we keep some tools, we donate the rest to trade schools. Tool companies do not hold providing sample tools "over our heads." We've established ourselves as a reliable, independent, and reputable tool review site. As a result they will continue to sent tools for coverage. The tool companies actually value our criticism, and have make tool changes based on it. Our problem is trying to cover them all - we simply can't. A 6-month or year look back review is a GREAT idea, and we've done it a few times. That aside, I enjoy your channels reviews. As to them being commercial like, I'm looking for brand recommendations sometimes. The "Everything is great" , "just takes getting used to" approach of review channels leads to more unanswered questions. I see it in the comments. I also see uneducated comments as well, "does this saw cut 1x6 trim" smh. Those tool/product reviews seem jaded in there true honesty. This tool is great but. .."Has no place on the jobsite" would be refreshing to hear. Although I see trades on jobsites using whatever brand/ style tool they have to "make it happen." When you Finally get a chance to upgrade! You look around, run into folks like yourself, looking for answers for things you can't actually see or use. Gotta buy online. That places more value in seasoned vets opinions. I also like samurai carpenter, and dfw crown channels. You guys make content people watch, opinions viewers value, keep on keeping on. I guess I'm looking for some one to say don't buy this, because for this price you should get x, its better, stronger, better warrantee,etc. Example, I'm in the market for a battery operated 7 1/4 miter saw. I'm invested in Makita but, for the money I'm thinking the Dewalt, though if I'm jumping systems and need to get 2 batteries and a charger. Is the dewalt worth it vs the Milwaukee? Is the Rigid good enough? I'm a flooring contactor but remodel houses and set tile when I'm slow. Its hard to find a review that is honest enough to use their suggestion. I'm sure ill end up with the 8 1/2 Makita. Its light and I've used it for a year and the light still works cuts straight, etc. But I work on track homes, power is a bitch. I have finally decided to buy this saw... I went cordless a while back with bosch and its great for smaller projects and trim but just can't hang when it comes to heavy use (and nearly useless for timber framing). I'm curious though, with all your contacts, could you get an opinion on wormdrive from a lefty? I'm lefty and I learned on a sidewinder and currently switch back and forth between left and right hands and blade left and blade right saws with no problem (the curse of lefties in a righty world) but this will be my first worm style saw. I'm curious how other lefties with worm drive experience use them? Right handed? Or like left handed sidewinders? Thanks.

Brian Wood I feel you’re pain. I’m a lefty and have been running the 36 volt x2 makita wormstyle saw. I’m pretty ambidextrous with it but mainly use my left hand. The dewalt has more power but the blade is far off of center it’s over an inch further away from the blade than the makita. Either saws are game changers in my book.

Brian Wood no I mean width wise from the edge of the blade to the center of the batterie where the handle is in line with the battery.. also, if you are ever looking for a custom tool belt look up badger tool belts. He’s a lefty and made my tool belt to my specs for $100 thanan occidental.

Graham K that's a really good question. It's the same with any of the cordless tool all this is more of a pocket that holds the battery and yes debris sawdust snow and rain can get in there so you have to pay attention to that

About a $400 setup. A Skil or Bosch 7 1/4" will run about a little over $200. Skil is now made in China. After 25 years I buy the Bosch for corded saws.

I worked as a framer for a year as a teen and have plenty of friends who are career carpenters. While he shouldn't have his thumb in front of the blade, this is hardly a dangerous way to operate the saw. Hell, we ran with the guards locked up, which I don't even think is an option on newer worm drives.

Why do cordless saws have the secondary trigger like on this saw? Are there government regulations that require this? Moreover, why do cordless tools have them but not corded.

Yes every cordless tool has to have a safety switch 90% of all my cordless tools have safety switches.

William Butler the tool has access to power if stored with a battery on the tool. The safety switch greatly reduces the risk of the trigger being tripped while in your tool box/truck/van. I asked Rob about this a while back and he brought this idea to my attention. The switches can be removed or disengaged, if you want. Obviously the tool manufacturer won't suggest this or tell you how to do it.

There is no cord to unplug and many people, including my self, leave the battery in.

a lot of people don't realize u only need to push the second button for a second wile engaging the trigger the u can let go. many people hold both through the full cut and u don't need to. then they say they hate it cause its hard to use. its nice to not have to worry when leaving battery in tools in bags

How about you do review that matters like real life use outside on rain , in west coast , Oregon washington it rains like 9 month out of the year , how will electronics and battery hold up to that, or that's a toy that u can baby it and keep it inside ?
