Dexcom G7 is available in the US and Europe and one of the major selling points is that the warm-up time, the time when you don’t get any blood sugar readings or alerts, is as little as 30-min.
Well… in reality the warm-up can be 0-min and in this video, I’ll show you how to do that.

I was told by a G7 user that if you insert the G7 sensor 6 hours prior to expiring (during the grace period), you won't experience misreadings with the second sensor begins. I will be starting the G7 tomorrow and will try that method. The first 24 hours using the G6 is so nuts and erratic at times.

As it generally becomes more accurate with time this strategy makes sense. Some insert it even earlier to increase accuracy

I’m waiting for my G7 to be approved by my insurance & Medicare. I’m a T1LADA (1992) & started with the G4. I went up to G6 before switching to a Freestyle Libre for the last couple of years, but from what I’ve gleaned from reports, it’s the best CGM yet.

Awesome video! I am on a tandem X2 and I received an email that will allow me early access hopefully pretty soon. My question is do you have to wait until the grace period is about to end before you insert the new sensor, the reason I ask is because I’d like to change mine the same time every time I insert it in, so I guess what I’m trying to ask is there a way of manually stopping the first sensor before manually starting the new sensor and still have Zero minutes warm-up time?

That’s really cool! I use the freestyle libre 2 CGM and the warm up is one hour. I don’t think you can reduce the warm ups at all but I have heard that placing the sensor early can make them more accurate the first 24 hours. I haven’t tried it yet tho. Also not sure if you heard it but, the law changed effective January 2023, now CGM should be covered by Medicaid… I have Medicaid and my doctor is working on the paperwork to get it covered. 👍😎

The DEXCOM SHOULD COM WITH VARIOUS SENSORS INSTEAD OF JUST 1. For 10 days replacement.
@pM-sh4ep
@pM-sh4ep Жыл бұрын
Been using g7 for a few months and overall happy with it. The warmup time always reads 25 min when I insert a new one, not 30 min. It’s much easier to change to a new sensor with g7 than it was with g6. With g6 I felt like I really had to plan, but with g7 it’s so quick you can just insert it and go. The one thing is wish Dexcom would consider for a future release is minute readings instead of every 5 minutes. 5 minutes is fine for trends and overall tracking, but when glucose levels are plummeting or soaring, the 5 minute lag can make a huge difference. Not to mention there is also a biological lag because the interstitial fluid reading on GCM is also a few minutes behind blood glucose readings. So with this and Dexcom only reading every 5 mins, you could have up to a 10 minute lag. This can be dangerous, I had a low where my reading got down to 47 on the Gluck meter but showed 65 on Dexcom. Since I ate carbs and got it up very quickly, the Dexcom never even reflected the fact I had a dangerous low. They need to develop readings every minute.
@DiabetesStrong
@DiabetesStrong Жыл бұрын
Yes! I completely agree with you. Readings every minute would be ideal
@karlyfriesen172
@karlyfriesen172 6 ай бұрын
That’s because as soon as it’s inserted it starts cuz there are 2 little magnets and once those disconnect it tells it to start the warm up! That is how you can completely skip any space without readings as well!

What good is a 30 minute warm-up if I have way-off numbers for 3-4 hours? Is the warm-up period really all that important? We all have strips, and you have to use them anyway with the G7 for way-way longer than the G6.

In my experience having been using G7 for quite a while now since its release my warm up time by the time I insert it and pair it with my phone it tells me the warm up is between 20 and 24 minutes before I start getting readings so I’m shaving off 6 to 8 minutes in the warm up time
@530mnorman

Ugh. I'm not looking forward to not being able to soak the sensor hours before activating it. That makes such a huge difference in my experience with G6 day 1 accuracy. If G7 is just as inaccurate on day 1, that makes me hesitant to switch over if I can't insert it 4 to 6 hours before the old one stops. Maybe the 12 hour grace period will make it even out though if I can just subtract the soak time from that.
@DiabetesStrong
@DiabetesStrong Жыл бұрын
You could use the grace period as the soaking period and still have the sensor last 10 days. I generally do find G7 to be a bit wonky the first 24 hours

Thanks so much for your video! Really helpful. I started my CGM journey 3 months ago with G6 (libre did not work for me). I’m in Australia and we don’t have the G7 available as yet although I’m not sure if I want to switch now that I’m used to the G6. I’m concerned about the filament being straight like the libre. I’m very skinny with barely any fat on my body so I’ve found that the G6 filament works well as it is not too deep (I still need to pinch during insertion). Any thoughts on this?
@DiabetesStrong
@DiabetesStrong Жыл бұрын
The sensor is much thinner than Libre 3 so I’d say that if you compare those two, Dexcom G7 is a better option. I don’t know why they went with a 90 degree angle for G7 but if you start G7 you might want to stick with abdomen or lower back

So if your sensor is not accurate in the first 24 hour "settling" time should you still calibrate multiple times until it is or does that make the process of settling in worse as the algorithm is expecting this and trying to compensate and all you are doing is fighting the process? In my personal experience I found calibrating over 2 to 3 times during this period can actually make things worse. What are other people's experience?
@DiabetesStrong
@DiabetesStrong Жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. I’m a little careful with calibrations as well as it seems like it can “confuse” the sensor. But if it’s significantly off (and I’ll do multiple finger sticks to confirm) I’ll do ‘single’ calibrations

I think you mention that you can place a G6 sensor before the current one expires (like the G7 you describe in your vid)… not sure that’s accurate because the transmitter on the G6 would be missing. With the G7, the transmitter and the sensor are combined. what am I missing?

Yes, but once inserted the clock on the 10-day sensor life starts. You could insert it once the grace period starts and you’d still get the full 10 days out of the sensor plus an additional 12 hours of it being inserted (as long as you don’t start it until the grace period is up)

We have been debating going from G6 to the G7 and are waiting to get more reviews on it. How do you feel about the G7 ? Is it atleast as reliable as the G6 even tho our experience to date (we are 3 months since our daughter was diagnosed) is that its about 50/50 good or bad sometimes we get 10 days out of a sensor most times we dont. But we are interested in the G7 beacuse of the size and warm up time

I’ve been using G6 for about 2 years. After lots of crazy readings, & need to recalibrate 2-3 times per sensor, it feels like they have settled down & gotten very close to my meter readings immediately after warm up - even when my Bgs are out of whack! I’m really hoping Medicare will cover the G7 upgrade for me. All those giant chunks of plastic, the sensor quitting on a particularly busy day…etc. Good luck to you, I can only try to imagine what it’s like to care for a child.

I was skimming some stuff and someone was using the word "marinate" in regard to this issue. Do all the CGM sensors need some time in the interstitial fluid before they start giving reasonably accurate readings? I know I experienced this with my Medtronic where the SG tells me I'm low and dropping fast and I do the blood test and I'm in a good place and fairly stable/level etc.
@CrotalusHH
@CrotalusHH Жыл бұрын
@@jackschitt6235 The sensor reads interstitial fluid that generally lags 15 minutes behind blood. The marinate refers to damage to the surrounding tissue when the sensor in inserted. This wound has to heal.

@@CrotalusHH Have you looked into the product where the sensor is put inside of you? All I got back from them was "your insurance doesn't cover it" and my endocrinologist said he isn't involved with it. He put me on the Medtronic system but I see many people saying the Dexcom is better. When I told my Endo I might want to switch to the Dexcom with the Omnipod he said Omnipod service is horrible. And part of why I don't like Medtronic is because they send calls to the Philippines and sometimes the person's English just isn't even good enough for things to go smoothly.

I help an elderly person with the G7. It sounds like I can insert the new G7 while the old G7 is still attached, wait 30 minutes and then start up the new one and get rid of the old if I am within the 12 hr grace period. If true, this will save us a lot of time and effort. True? What about if I drive there (takes me an hour) and some hours are left on the old one before the grace period begins...can I swap then using the 30 minute method with both attached?
@DiabetesStrong
@DiabetesStrong 4 ай бұрын
You can insert the new one at any time and the warm-up will start even if it's not started in the app. This means that if you time it correctly you'll never have a warm-up period where you don't get any readings. If you insert it hours before you're ready to start it, it will start giving you blood sugar readings immediately when started in the app/receiver, HOWEVER, those hours from inserted to started will be considered "active" sensor hours. So if you insert it 2 hours before starting it, the sensor life will now be 10 days + 10 hours instead of 10 days + 12 hours

I talked with a Medtronic rep a few days ago about my software upgrade for my pump and the newer and hopefully better CGM sensors they are bringing out. He used the expression about "splitting hairs" about the difference in accuracy of the competing CGM's on the market now. Not like the Medtronic guy is likely to admit that the Dexcom is better BUTT, in the good old days people relied on consumer reports for an objective analysis of who is making the best dishwasher or whatever else. Now with the internet there is just too much information and it's hard to efficiently sift through and determine who/what is the most credible. Everyone has an agenda, everyone is trying to make money it seems. Too much of a good thing itis I call it. Like they say in the Army opinions/excuses are like a**holes, everybody has one!

I used the Medtronic Guardian CGMS with my 670G pump. Before going to the Dexcom G6 with the Tandem T:slim pump. The Medtronic rep splitting hairs remark would have to be hairs as big as a redwood tree. The Dexcom G6 is inaccurate the first 24 hours. Yes. Its first 24 hour inaccuracy is similar to what the Medtronic Guardian was all of the time. After the first day, the G6 is fairly close to the blood sugar meter. Within 5-10%. And then of course, the T:slim actually uses basal insulin to keep your blood sugar at a normal healthy level. Unlike the Medtronic pump which thought skyrocketing blood sugars was perfectly fine and dandy. And gave no extra basal insulin to keep blood sugars under control.

I found your video had an interesting caveat: It was when you showed and said that you would receive the two sensor readings during the warm up on the display. Kind of brings up a concern: Say two, or more, family members are wearing their sensors and reasonably close to each other, then each would be getting each others readings on their display device? Conceivable one could be at a gathering of people, and begin to see someone else's readings as well? And you won't know which reading is yours? Can't happen with the G6 with its unique transmitter code. Seems odd to me that the smartphone app would accept any other readings until the code is input.
