Why Isn't Horizon Forbidden West Using PSSR on PlayStation 5 Pro?

Forbidden West released with terrible image quality in performance mode, looking worse than their own previous game zero dawn... But then, Guerilla took the complaints seriously and developed a much better solution that pretty much completely solved the image quality issues and made it one of the best performance modes out right now both in image quaility and framerate. So, i'm not surprised they want to stick to their existing solution.

that was an insane improvement. I remember I resorted to playing the game on graphic mode when it launched. I finally switched to performance mode months later when I was around the endgame and was blown away that I couldn't tell a difference between quality and performance mode other than the game now running at a much higher framerate, I finished the game in performance mode. That was one hell of an improvement they made, you can tell they really took those complaints seriously.

Sure my Sony Bravia upscales the image further, but the quality simply can’t be beat. I’d put it up against any pc. I mess with my uncles and aunts a lot by cutting off the HUD and just playing regularly. They think it’s a real movie everytime 😂🤣

I noticed a much bigger difference in frame rates in the comparison you all put in. I think resolution will be negligable because unless you are comparing them directly, you'll never notice. The smoothness from a higher frame rate looks to be the biggest difference

​@@-BarathKumarS I think people have a fundamental misunderstanding about PSSR and what the goals around PSSR. The whole goal of PSSR is to lower the internal resolution so that you can improve performance while maintaining image quality. The first thing to remember is that PSSR isn't free. You can do reconstruction without using machine learning and in theory keep the horsepower to power your engine.

What are you talking about? KZ2 was a direct follow-up to the events of KZ1 and Liberation. A significant technical leap for the series, perhaps, but nowhere close to a remake.

I have a Sony Bravia xr 4k TV and it also does some processing itself. And Horizon zero dawn and Horizon forbidden west already look good. super sharp better than what I can see on my PC monitor. I think a lot also depends on your screen/monitor

Uff I don’t think to. This is one of the best looking games that you can get on consoles. Ps5 runs this game in performance mode unlocked with up to 80-90 fps. This is absolutely stunning with these visuals. There was barely anything held back by ps4.

At 1:09... the grass looks so much better on the Standard PS5 in Resolution Mode than PS5 Pro. Horizon is one of the few games that i play on the High res mode bc it legit looks like a film, and plus its so incrededliby sharp on a big screen with Native 4k.

Well it already runs at 1800p 60 in Perf Mode so there’s little room for difference in this cross gen title. But looking at games like Monster Hunter Wilds, or Veilguard, or Wukong, or Rebirth, or Survivor, games that are heavy and with really poor image quality especially at 60fps (Wilds looks smeared, blurry, and full of artifacts, especially in foliage, even in Quality Mode shockingly on PS5 base) this is the interesting stuff. As we saw with Rebirth it can be night and day difference. With more devs using UE5 or comparably heavy engines and feature sets, image quality and a stable 60 will be harder and harder to achieve as the gen moves on on base PS5. It’s hardware that was considered midrange over half a decade ago, and player expectations are way too high. You either need to be on a decent rig on PC, or buy into the midgen refreshtl to maintain higher specs over a 7-8 year gen. We’re already seeing this just this week with Wilds and Veilguard. And with games like GTA 6, Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Wolverine, and others coming up only on console, if you want a decent image quality at a stable framerate the Pro will deliver that. These games are why we needed the Pro. Not Last of Us or Horizon.

I don't need more than 120 but 90 is much better than 60, both in first person games and in games where you move the camera a lot quickly. Why not go let us have more? Hogwarts Legacy and GoW Ragnarok (and other games) felt great in 60+fps. It looks better imo. Ofc I don't necessarily want them to prioritize it, but if it's not demanding to throw PSSR in - why not?

Well, that'll sort of be okay because it would be nice to see the better cloud system and hear the better sound quality of the burning shores version. Then, I think it's beneficial for a decimal ps5 (pro) engine to be made to with an existing game rather than a new one to shorten development time. Then Kill zone shadowfall remastered could be released on that update tech.

The performance mode on ps5 is slightly less sharp compared to the resolution mode. The problem lies in how great that performance mode looks on base ps5. The pro update takes the res mode and you get a solid 60fps instead of the 30fps limit.

The Pro has similar or better visual fidelity as graphics mode but running at 60 fps. The Pro is for spec chasers and those who can actually discern what the differences are. I mean, there are also people out there who build or buy high spec PCs just to say they did, but then they can't tell the difference between things like AO and HBAO+, or SSR and Ray Tracing and how they affect the image. The only thing they care about is "Can it run at 4k 60 fps?"
