As previously noted by John Devitofranceschi, this fix only worked for newer MacBooks that have only USB-C ports when I switched from a USB-C or Thunderbolt cable to a USB cord with an USB to USB-C adapter. With a USB-C cable, you do not get a blank screen, you only get the apple log and a reboot. Also, with Mac OS Catalina, the iTunes functions are moved to the Finder app. You will see your iphone when it connects under Locations on the sidebar.

While I wait for this restore it remains to be seen if DFU mode works to fix my all of a sudden endless reboot looping XS Max (a 10 month old replacement from Apple, for the first one that died on me at 6 months old)... but when quarantine hits and you live in the epicenter, anyone can be an apple tech thanks to this video. This is the clearest and easiest to understand version that I found. I impressed myself by following along and it worked perfectly to get into DFU on the second try. I was lucky enough to sneak in a backup before it looped into oblivion, so fingers crossed.

I was constantly getting the Apple Logo when following these directions. Then I stopped using the USB-C cable and used a UBS2 cable. Nailed it the first time after that!

Your video was the only one that helped me! I was in panic mode. I did this like 3 times. Let it completely die. Have it a brake for a few hours than charged it and it was back to new. Luckily all of my photos were already backed up. I just had to do all my app downloads 😭 but I saved myself a trip to the apple store. And also from potentially buying a new one. Lol

Thanks, what worked for me was volume down and power button for few seconds caused the iphone to restart. i then let go off the power button and kept volume down held in. nothing will appear on your screen. but if you have your iphone connected to your computer or laptop using the lightning cable and having itunes manually opened on your computer or laptop, it will give you the message prompt, iphone detected in recovery mode error. lol wonder what the work around is if your volume buttons are broken lol! (edit) you may need to do my above method twice as the first time the itunes will download the software and you will be returned to the dreaded connect to itunes screen on your phone while itunes is downloading. once on your itunes, and ios firmware update has finished the downloading the update. (top right corner of itubes tiny arrow pointing down). just repeat my process from the top on howto get the iphone into restore mode and you will then be restoring your iphones again. hope this helps everyone
