He didn't want help with his driving today, just retrospective feedback, but you were hinting at him throughout, like "whats coming up ahead" and "is there anyone waiting at the crossing". I can see he's quite a nervous driver but he'll never get that confidence until you let him drive without the hints. By this point he really should be, just my two cents for your next lesson. It's better to let him make a mistake (almost go when there's someone on a zebra and you having to use the break) than to forewarn him every time, otherwise he may become reliant on that hint. Trust that he'll spot that hazard, and if he doesn't and you have to use the break, it will be a lesson learnt which he'll have that positive fear in wanting to avoid

I think it's about striking a balance with feedback. It's completely unsafe and quite dangerous to allow him to nearly make a mistake if he continues driving and doesn't react accordingly when there's someone on a zebra crossing. However, for smaller mistakes, yes, I think overreliance on hints can be quite a bit overbearing. It does depend on the person and how they learn. Naturally those hints will be less and less once you learn more and more.

A little tip for all instructors... If you ask 5 or 6 questions in 1 sentence, it makes us the learners to make more mistakes. Leave some of the questions for when the car is stationary. It seems easy for someone who's been driving for years, but for a learner it does require that we focus on what we re doing, let alone on top of that, answering questions. A good example on this videos is on that roundabout where the learner did not count the number of exits, because the instructor kept asking questions where he could leave them for later.
@mydogeatspuke
@mydogeatspuke Жыл бұрын
I also noticed he was asked to move to the left lane (immediately prior it was a merging lane he couldn't access) when safe, which was then an exit, and it wasn't safe to move before reaching the cut off for the exit so he had to slow down to make it, but was being told not to slow down. Fair enough you should usually just drive on if you can't make your turn but on a dual carriageway you don't know how long the next exit could be and presumably the lesson was planned for a specific route that didn't take into account an extra n minutes on a dual carriageway to the next town over. It would have been more reasonable to say "and move straight to the left for the next exit" before reaching that point. If they want you to take two roundabouts in a row they give you directions for both at once so these things don't happen, so it felt like setting the kid up for failure by not giving him all the necessary information.
@keith6400
@keith6400 Жыл бұрын
@@mydogeatspuke When instructing it is normal to give the precautionary words of command first i.e. "when it is safe or "when you are ready" etc. rather than "turn right" as the latter can be interpreted as doing it now, as in "move straight to the left... before the next exit. In the section shortly after 10:43 you should notice that a small number undertakers occurred and at a much higher speed than our pupil. There were huge gaps between them. In order to change lanes easily his best plan would be rapidly accelerate to flow speed, once matched to the traffic in the left lane he can move across easily. Slowing down prior to changing lanes makes changing lanes a lot more difficult. If traffic were flowing at 60 mph and he accelerated to the same speed he could easily fit in. Conversely if he slowed down to 20 mph the gap he would need would be much larger and following traffic would be coming up behind at a very worrying faster speed. This is why Pin gets a bit agitated.
@mydogeatspuke
@mydogeatspuke Жыл бұрын
@@keith6400 I never suggested it wasn't "normal" to suggest doing something when it is safe? I never suggested to instead bark a command with the expectation of it being responded to immediately. If a learner can't accurately judge speeds then they shouldn't be on a dual carriageway yet. It was the instructor's choice to direct the learner to that road, so the issues should have been anticipated. Getting angry because the learner can't read your mind is how you create a nervous driver. And it's all well and good matching the speed of the lane, but like I said (if you'd bothered to read before lecturing me as though I am clueless) the left was a rapidly approaching exit. If the learner had continued to accelerate to match speed he would have missed the exit. You can see the road markings clear as day, and you presumably know what they mean. Experience is necessary to understand these things, but throwing someone who can't swim in at the deep end and then berating them for drowning is unkind and unnecessary.
@keith6400
@keith6400 Жыл бұрын
@@mydogeatspuke I was simply saying normal protocol with learners is to give the precautionary before the instruction is standard practise. Initially learners respond to direct commands such as "less gas" or "off the brake" and instant reaction is desirable. The two systems need to run along side one another and used as appropriate. All the things said should be at a normal speech volume. Learners are not going to be good at judging speed and this is where the instructor comes in. The problem the learner had was starting in lane 2 he does not speed up much then wants to slow down. Most cars will accelerate from 30 to 60 in 3 to 4 seconds enabling you to co-ordinate with one of the huge gaps and move across. Your post does seems a little negative insofar as what you never said, never suggested, what learners can't do and that a simple lane change could not be achieved in the example. If he had sped up a lot he could have achieved a safe lane change under those circumstances if he ran out of road he would simply remain in lane 2 and continue. Slowing to a crawl would be very dangerous as traffic builds up behind and half of them will force through or try to.
@mydogeatspuke
@mydogeatspuke Жыл бұрын
@@keith6400 ... its like you don't realise that you're just repeating what I already said, but at me, as if it's something you know and I don't. My "post" is negative in response to you responding to things I demonstrably never even said. How else would you prefer someone say "I did not say that?" If you're so troubled by "negativity" as you call it then perhaps keep your responses to things that actually were said 🙄🙄

I think when you keep repeating don’t break, he’s thinking about you saying it and other distractions so he will not put as much gas on and then will slow down naturally. I feel it doesn’t help when it sounds more stressful as it needs to be by repeating don’t break.
@mydogeatspuke
@mydogeatspuke Жыл бұрын
I think he was slowing down because he had been told to go into the left lane but it was an exit so there were hatched lines he shouldn't cross coming up, and it wasn't yet safe to move over because of the oncoming cars, and he didn't want to miss the exit so he eased off the gas. Realistically he should have been given the direction before it came up as it's quite a short stretch of road from merging lane to exit.

When did having a car parked on both sides of the road with enough space for cars to pass between become a safety hazard for the test? It's completely normal to expect a residential road to have cars parked on both sides. It's surely only a problem if people can't actually pass at all? As long as you're not directly opposite a side road or over a dropped kerb (or yellows obv, but even that doesn't always apply), there isn't a safety issue?

@fireburn95rs
@fireburn95rs Жыл бұрын
In reality you probably won't ever hit a cyclist when going straight. It's still a good idea to check your mirrors though to have that awareness of what is coming up, so that if you needed to swerve left and right a little (maybe to avoid a pothole or a puddle) you don't hit a cyclist. Gotta also consider, cyclists (legally) filter through traffic. Their flight path is based on the current state of the cars which is stationary. If you move and they are moving besides you at the same time, you could scare them causing them to fall or swerve into other traffic. So despite the fact it's not a likely situation, I'd still say it's very valid to do so.

However, not so much in my own car (of course)! Do you have any thoughts on how to transfer techniques in your instructor's car into your own car? point your wing mirror down a bit so you can see the lines on the floor. Presumably you're not missing by a mile, just minor correction needed, so that should help until you get more of a feel for the width of the car. Dont see the benefit of using a handbrake for a traffic light or pedestrian crossing. You have a normal break??

I think the rationale is that if a car hits you from behind, you may let off the foot break and be pushed into the people on the crossing.

What's the deal with using handbrake so much? Makes you unable to swiftly drive away.
@Fade_ToBlack

You gotta remember he’s training to pass the test, not drive away quicker. Holding the car at a stop for an extended period of time is frowned upon in test and can lead to a minor. Not only that but in the test it’s still generally safer than testing your clutch control and potentially rolling back. If you affect traffic behind even once in those 40 mins, test over lol
@mupsoftaren
@mupsoftaren Жыл бұрын
@@Fade_ToBlack "to pass the test, not drive away quicker" "If you affect traffic behind even once in those 40 mins, test over" using handbrake (and neutral at every stop) makes you take longer to drive off, stalling those behind you who don't (unless they've also been taught this useless trick and cause more accidents by stalling others). If you can actually drive you use the break pedal, if it's a long stop you put the car in neutral. The only time I EVER use handbrake is when I'm parked, or if it's a long stop on a very steep hill; and I pretty much only use neutral when I'm gonna leave my car with it running or drop someone else off, NEVER while driving. I passed my test my first time in late fall with zero faults. The point of the final test is to show you will never piss off someone who's in a hurry and make him do something rash because you drive so insecurely/like an old lady. *The more secondary actions you do to achieve one goal (brake pedal, stop, put in neutral, handbrake, wait for green, put in first gear, lower handbrake, find biting point and revs... vs stop with brake pedal/clutch then find biting point and just hold it) the greater the risk of user error and stalling.* And still shocking how UK allows parking on the right/against traffic, that's gets you a ticket in Sweden instantly.

No it's for the second exit too. If you're exiting the first exit you signal left entering the roundabout. If you're exiting the second exit dont signal left until you pass the first exit ... then check mirrors and signal left.

No. This is a common misconception. If there is a left arrow in the lane before a roundabout then it means you can use that lane for every left exits. There are some roundabouts that has only 1 left exit, but some can have 2 or more left exits. For example if you need to turn left 2nd exit you have to use a lane that has the left arrow on it. Every exit before 12 o'clock position is a left exit (unless the signs tell you otherwise). You need to start MSM (mirror-signal-manoeuvre) routine when you reach the exit before the one you want to take. So if you need to use the 2nd exit to leave the roundabout you should start your MSM routine when you reach the 1st exit. If you need to use the 1st exit to leave the roundabout then you can start your MSM routine before the roundabout. On smaller roundabouts you will probably need to start your MSM routine a bit faster. And on a multilane roundabout it's probably safer to switch to outer lanes before the chosen exit, because you don't want to cut across multiple lanes suddenly.
