*The thermic effect of food (TEF),* also known as *diet-induced thermogenesis,* refers to the energy expenditure associated with the processes of digestion, absorption, and metabolism of the food we eat. Here's a detailed breakdown: *What is TEF?* Definition: It's the increase in energy expenditure above the basal metabolic rate due to the cost of processing food for storage and use. *How Does It Work?* *Digestion:* When you eat, your body uses energy to break down food into smaller components. This includes mechanical digestion (chewing, churning in the stomach) and *chemical breakdown by enzymes.* *Absorption:* Once broken down, nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through the walls of the digestive tract. This process also requires energy. *Metabolism:* After absorption, nutrients are transported to cells where they are used for various functions. This includes building proteins, repairing tissues, and providing energy for activities.
