I'll never forgot being 10 years old and watching the opening cinematic where it was Baal I believe talking to that old man in the cell. The old man thought he was an angel. This story line blows WoW out of the water. For real.

That was pretty sweet.. I've never really delved into the lore of Diablo since I loved the mystery of not knowing.. I still play Diablo 1, just started it again, and to a lot of people's disagreement, probably, I think Diablo 1 is far better than Diablo 2, atleast in my oppinion. That's mostly because of the grittier and more sinister mood and atmosphere in Diablo 1.. I still to this day hope someone will remake Diablo 1, keeping it in complete touch with the old game.

If you like this first part of the Lore - before the Horadrim - that you absolutely have to read the 3 Sin War Books. They tell the Story of Uldyssian and they are so incrediblyx good! The other 4 books are very very good aswell, but the Sin War tells Storyline most deeply. All the Books have been used for Diablo 3 , for example you can see the Fortress of Ureh in the map, wich is the setting for Kingdom of Shadow - probably the best of the other 4 Diablo books. Read them!

Just a tip you could start the lore with the story of Anu and Tathamet, Since they were the very 1st beings in the world of Diablo.They fought each other leading to their deaths and creating Heaven and Hell.

The lore is tied in with the samarian description of how humans were created, where you had the Annunaki (Gods) who created humans using advanced alien genetic manipulation and when the Annunaki mated with the humans, they created the Niphilum, half human half god.

Tathamet's 7 heads became the 3 prime and 4 lesser evils while his body laid the foundation for the Burning hells. Anu's spine became the crystal arch, the foundation of heaven from which all angels were made like notes to a grand harmony. And so angels and demons fought each other as natural enemies.

Don't forget Izual in the lore. In Diablo 2 I believe we learn it was his idea to use the soulstones, specifically so the forces of hell could use them for their own purposes after being released from them.

I'm not sure where you got your information from, but it is Baal. Derived from Tor' Baalos or Ba'al. Also Ba'al is a title meaning "lord" that was applied to a number of West Semitic gods.

if anyone ever played DIABLO 1 on the Playstation there is an option that is not in the PC Version of the Game, There is a Button that Enters you in so a Selection of Books about the Story before the first Game, About The King and his young Son that was infected by diablos soul stone, about the War between Angels and Demons and all the Lords (Diablo, Baal and the others, you recommend you guys to have a look in to a PSX Copy of Diablo, its Not a Feature you need to unlock its in Main Menu. :)

The info in this is pretty good but the actual process of the creation was a little grey. The woldstone is actually the eye of the all powerful being that created both angels and demons named Anu. Check it out if your a hardcore lore fan like me on Diablo wiki. Good video though I did not know the part about Inarius and Lillith (Not sure if that's what you said her name was. lol)

It's Baal aka Lord of Destruction. One of the three prime evils, and the last boss of the Diablo 2 expansion. All 3 prime evils were banished in Diablo 2. (Diablo, Mephisto and Baal.

In the Diablo series 'Baal' is pronounced 'Bale.' Even the NPCs in the game say it this way. However, those who pronounce 'A' differently than North Americans will say 'Bah-ahl' this is the same as the Baldurs Gate series where it is spelt Bhaal. Secondly, the Lore differs on whether the soul stone was put in tal rasha by Tyrael without consent. It depends on whether you are reading from the Book of Cain, or the original manuals that came with the game. Finally, --> see next post

If you like Diablo lore I recommend reading Paradise Lost by John Milton - you get the defiant perspective of Satan and of the angels loyal to God. Reading the Old Testament and Bible beforehand helps make it a better experience. Also the Warhammer 40K "Horus Heresy" books are great if you're really into epic scale corruption/revolt stories.

Points that "Baal" is pronounced 'Bail', or 'Bale', and not foot'ball'. 1: In the ending cinematic to D2 non expansion. Baal says "However, I am not Tyreal" and Marius says "Baal (Bail) 2: In the opening cinematic to D2 Expansion, the barbarian (who looks like he's an extra in Mel Gibsons "Braveheart") looks towards Baals armies and says queitly, "Baal" (Bail). There may dialogue in D2 and it's expansions that also prove the point, but not enough characters, nor is my memory that good.

Heaven and Hell were created by an epic battle of the diamond warrior Anu, and the "evil" dragon Tathamet. The two were evenly matched for many millennium, until each both took their final strike. This final strike triggered a chaotic event, in which the High Heavens and the Burning Hells were created. The 7 Evils (3 prime, 4 lesser) are the [former] seven heads of Tathamet, and the weapons bore by the archangels of the High Heavens represent the ideals of the diamond warrior Anu.

Finally, the reason that the heroes of D1 and D2 have magic in them, after Inarius diminished them with the worldstone is that Uldyssian irreversibly changed the worldstone so that humans would develop their magic again at a slower rate, rather than the accelerated rate at which his own powers grew.

1) Agreed that in the game Baal is pronounced 'Bale/Bail'. If that's Blizzard's choice, so be it. 2) 'Ball' is not totally correct either. 3) Baal was historically worshiped in ancient Canaan by many cultures and the closest English pronunciation would be 'BARL'. Personally I find this sounds more dark, menacing and in touch with Diablo's character.

to further expand, the angels of the high heavens represent Anu; Order. and the demons of the burning hells represent chaos; Tathamet. Neither side is "Good" or "Evil" they just represent the virtues of their doctrines. It is up to you to decide. The Angels and Demons are not mortal, the Nephalem are humankind in this world. The Nephalem's home is Sanctuary in the diablo universe. Sanctuary was created by a a mutiny/alliance of a few angels/demons who grew tired of the Eternal Conflict.

Interesting, my knowledge of Diablo lore only goes back to when the 3 evils were betrayed and cast into the world of Sanctuary. The events predating that, however, I never knew anything about. I am quite surprised to learn that Humans are the descendents of Angels and Demons and at one time they possessed powers greater than any demon or angel. Latent Human potential?
