What you need to understand is a robotic platform and the functions robot can perform are developed separately. People say they want useful robots, this thing can clearly navigate human environments quickly. So what do you want it to do? Buy it as a development platform, add your own tools on top and this robot can be exactly what you want. A competitive useful robotic platform in the lowest price backet you can buy robots in period. This company killed it, absolutely killed it. 3k is a steal, for its specs they could have easily asked double that. Its weird that people don't get the pricing of such tech, but think about tech like Siri, voice recognition software has been in the works for over 60 years. It's not that we couldn't make it it work, it's that there is basically no money to be made. Amazon tried to use it to decrease the threshold to purchase and engage with their webstore and still failed, Apple used it as a tech-gimic during the peak of "innovation" as a buzzword to make their device seem cutting edge. We now use it to set timers and ask about the weather to save us a few thumb swipes. Sometimes the biggest challenge of new technology is matching it with a application so it actually has a real function. Same thing with Spot, upon release it is a development platform, robotics engineers often focus on the the giving it function part, so R&D in companies that make LIDAR units or security related sensors can now integrate their product into the development platform. And now we have automated full time remote access to the insides of fission reactors, or 24/7 patrol of building sites which doubles as a scanning/assesment tool for progress and defect identification etc. Same with drones, thermal cameras and search and rescue units. It takes time, so when you say stuff like "i wish companies would make useful robots" you come across as a complete asshat to the people who are working in and on robotics right now. And adding "in this price range" means you have no clue what you would even want out of a robot let alone in this price range.

Holy crap, it's adorable. I recall seeing a Hacksmith short where they had this running around and they tripped it over a forklift prong or something and caused it to faceplant. I thought it was something _they_ made at the time, didn't know it was an actual product people could buy. some "consumer robots" they only sell to tech companies (so that they aren't make to look bad by "regular people.") The case looks monstrously huge but that remote looks so simple. I can imagine 3D printing custom attachments.

I'm seeing it differently.. $3k+ robot, $35 computer; they made a device that is entirely reliant on computer logic but spent 1 percent of the budget on computer logic. A $200 increase on $3000 would not dissuade potential customers and would increase its useful applications so many times over. I would totally buy one with a pi if it were about a quarter of the size and a quarter of the price.
@Tripmonkey
@Tripmonkey Жыл бұрын
@@c4pt1n54no Can't disagree with that. I was mainly looking at what they have the Pi doing with the self balancing + voice recognition etc. I love seeing how much devs can squeeze out of limited hardware :)

Thr RPi is probably something like a highlevel driver. All the motion and balancing calculations needs to be done in realtime and probably have dedicated microcontrollers taking care of it.

I think a good stress test for the balancing would be to strap a small, medium, and large plastic tub on its head and have it carry at least close to the capacity and have it try and make short-distance deliveries on different terrain. It would also be interesting to see it try and carry the plastic tub with more or less in the tub so maybe it's packed, maybe it's rolling around a bit which could prove to be quite a challenge to keep balance. I could see a use being helping the elderly or otherwise incapacitated maintain their autonomy. I could also see it similarly used as an assistant for carrying around tools for different kinds of trades that require a diverse set of tools. They could pretty easily make a mounting lock accessory for people looking to utilize this by just using the handles already on there, and then it can be attached to a container to put on top by the user. They could also make compatible reinforced containers themselves, or maybe just make the mounting lock accessory be directly compatible with Pelican cases. Existential moment though... Imagine this, but double or triple the size. 👀💦 The implications of how it could be used in different (not so savory) fields are endless. Now imagine an army of them, armed to the teeth and armored, with added built in stabilizer mounts that pop out and plant in the ground to fire.

Would you consider taking it off-road to see how well it might do? I have done wilderness search and rescue, and could imagine use case scenarios for a system like this in that area, being used as a kind of scout system supporting a SAR worker, and helping transport gear. It would also be interesting to see if a stretcher could be rigged up between two of them and have it transport people.

$2,899.00 marked down $1,000 from $3,899.00 I do several hours of research most every day, & sometimes it's difficult for me to come back around to every individual thing I learned about. I like to research robots & AI but when people don't mention a price it's kinda easy to assume it's likely not very affordable to the average person.
