I wanted to add this as an extra point. Whilst it was such a relief to be diagnosed with autism after a lifetime of feeling so different, & it's been so healing to forgive & embrace myself. There are still days where i hate being autistic, because at the end of the day i still have to deal w/ the same struggles as before my diagnosis. So I want to let others know that it's also okay if you don't feel relief, or happy to get diagnosed. The worst thing after going undiagnosed and having no support my whole life, is honestly the c-ptsd (also from other sources), and severe social anxiety and selective mutism. Holding down jobs has been a challenge, speaking is difficult irl in public. Also other issues i keep private. So I just wanted to add this, since this video about my diagnosis was largely positive, & it's true, like i said in the video, i don't want to dwell on the past so much anymore. But I also don't want to give the false impression that everything is sunshine and roses now either. But again I also didn't wanna focus on the super dark parts of my journey here, i glossed over or didn't mention them in the vid, because it was too vulnerable for me personally to be able to talk about on camera. Plus i did want to leave this video on an uplifting note, something i'm aspiring to do, because it IS hard to embrace and accept yourself!

I only figured it out in my late 40's. But then most of the extended family are also on the weird side, so I didn't have anything normal to compare to.

Congrats on your diagnoses!! (in the context that it helps you know how your brains works). I also got diagnosed like literally a few weeks ago and I'm still on the journey to understand myself... and honestly creating a new relationship with myself! I wish you luck on your journey

Thank you Sarah for sharing your story. It is nice that you have learned to love and accept yourself for who you are. As an autistic person myself, I can relate. Btw your hair is so beautiful I love your hair and you also have a nice accent

That was a great video Sarah. Thank you. I'm 45 and in Scotland. I just went through my autism assessment a few days ago. I need to wait another few weeks for my results. Like you I had loads of questionnaire fill out and an interview. It was so nerve racking. Especially because I had no way of preparing for it. I thought of so many things to say after the interview that I wish I'd said. I'm not sure I said enough during it due to my anxiety. I'll let u know how I got on.

I was diagnosed at 32 during covid as well. I also realised around 2014/2015. There was a few tv programmes on female autism in the UK. Probably read that same article.

No Autistic person should ever take SSRI's for any reason SSRI's break the communication with the lower emotional brain and leaves you in evolutionary terms an insect with a thought process Come off them very very slowly and seek guidance The most assistance for people "away with the fairies" is Magic mushrooms They reset the Amygdala resetting the utter fear we exist in Lasts for 4 hours, best taken with family members around to FEEL the oxytocin release that you have never felt before Love you all good luck the ancients have all the answers "you have been driven around the bend"

When this happens.."I've just seen a load of autism/adhd memes/posts that relate to me, I will do months of in depth research to see if I might have the condition(s)" Pretty much all the time that person has ADHD/Autism.

Situational mutism is an everyday experience for me.
@rutenp2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah! I came to your channel because of the video about selective mutism, which you explained well as situational mutism. I had it as a child, I know it now, but it was totally overcome. My 6 year old daughter, however, has been suffering from it. Her case seems more critical than mine was. And I suffer thinking about what she might be going through. We have also investigated autism in her, but in a very superficial way. It seems that she is not autistic. Nevertheless, after this video of yours, I would like to dig deeper and figure out how this assessment could be done, since she doesn't talk to doctors or psychologists. Would you consider any behavior issue crucial in the diagnosis? You read a part of report that mentioned social interaction, protocols... I will try to perceive her better in this way and try to help her. Thank you. Greetings from Brazil.

They didn't know anything about selective mutism back in the 70s either as they do now.

Did you need someone from your childhood to participate in the assessment? Did they need to know about your developmental milestones? I just went through the process with my child, and feel I need to be tested also. But I don't have anyone to tell them about my childhood and I'm worried that could prevent a diagnosis.
@sarahstarmonie2 жыл бұрын
I did not! My parents live in another country, which would've made it very difficult. It wasn't required for me! I've seen others get diagnosed without parents being involved too, so it is possible!
@Catlily52 жыл бұрын
I think the DSM 5 changed to not needing a person from childhood for your assessment, but I am not 100% sure.

I have a personal question. Have you ever got pulled out of an apartment complex by your parents because you were disruptive? Well I have and it's not fun. I have selective mutism. I have had it for I want to say forty years but that is not right. I was diagnosed at age 5.
