I wanted to share in a quick video about the main diagnostic manuals used to diagnose autism and other conditions. The United States and much of the rest of the world use different manuals from each other, which can affect terms and diagnostic criteria.

I remember going through the DSM-IV and thinking, "I have every disorder listed!" I am not familiar with the DSM-V, so I should try to find a copy.

In Sweden we use both. There are a few differences between ICD and DSM, mainly that some conditions like CPTSD doesn't exists in the DSM. And is, in my oppinion, much more extensive than DSM. But that's nit-picking. The wording can differ too, like for my sons ASD and ADD diagnosies, the DSM and ICD diagnosis names were on the documentation we got from the clinic. It made it seem like he had 4 different diagnosies, when in fact he only got two. In Sweden we call those NPF (neuro-psykologisk funktionsnedsättning) or Neuro-Psychological (dys)Function. It includes a whole specturm of developmental disorders and conditions. So we just say he's NPF and that's really all you need to know. My son has 5 NPF diagnosies. NPF is just a legal/techinical term and not a formal diagnosis, but it makes it so much easier for everyone to understand what's going on without having to explain every diagnosis in detail. The only time ICD is really used is the diagnosis coding for medical journals. The rest is DSM. Although, they do use ICD to diagnose too, depending on the person doing the diagnosing.

Some time ago I sent Stephanie a link where individuals can download a PDF copy of the DSM. Unfortunately, that was never shared and links are not allowed (by KZbin) in the comments section. You would think the way people "reference" the DSM, the section(s) on ASD/Autism is 500 pages long. In fact, then section on ASD (sec, 299.0 / F84.0) is only 8 pages long! There is even a section to clarify if you do not meet all criteria, alternate diagnosis probablilites. I would strongly encourage people to access a copy of the DSM and read the exact sections on Autism Spectrum Disorder. Far too many do not read it and pretty much add large amount of things that are not in the manual to justify their opinions. Hopefuly this will stop people from using those "Five things you MUST KNOW that says you are Autisitc!" video's to false self diagnose!

I looked at all kinds of videos on autism (500+) but Stephanie Bethany's video on the DSM 5 made me more sure I could be autistic. Two mental health professionals suggested that I was (1 just before the Covid shutdown) so I spent Covid looking at autism videos. And reading articles on autism. It is important to look into things more deeply. I am seeing about an assessment now.

@@Catlily5 Good for you! I hope you are successful in getting an assessment. Unfortunately, people have gotten in the habbit of using "Dr. KZbin" and "Dr. Google" for their own self diagnosis and stop there. Reading the DSM allows you to understand how an assessment will go. Do not be discouraged. Audult diagnosis takes time and sometimes the results may not be as you expected going in.

I would love to see you do a deep dive on the genetic component of Autism. 2 of my three kids are officially diagnosed as gifted/Autistic with ADHD, and my 3rd child is going to be diagnosed in February. My psychiatrist has agreed with my "self diagnosis" of Autism, and I am just waiting until we an afford to get an adult assessment done to make it official. I know so little about the genetic link in Autism, other than in some cases there is one, and would love to learn more.

ADHD has a genetic component. I wrote an essay on the subject at UNI. The funny thing is that that gene is passed down mother to daughter only. So the odds of a girl having ADHD is much higher than a boy, yet they never get tested for it. 2/3 of my family (including cousins and such) have been diagnosed with Autism/ADHD. I haven't really looked into the genetic componets of Autism yet. But it's highly likely it followes the same pattern and somehow being connected to the same gene. It would be an interesting subject to cover for sure.
@ninhydren2321

@@SailorYuki that is interesting that the ADHD gene is only passed mother to daughter, because my older two kids (daughter and son) also have ADHD, just like me. I just assumed that I passed those on to them since my wife doesn't seem to be Autistic or ADHD.

"It would not be correct for anyone to state "definitive" correlations of genetics and Autism. That subject is still in heavy research. It is known that Autism has a "genetic component" to it. How and to what degree is constantly discussed and debated. There are currently over 105 genetic markers that have been identified as to having some degree of influence. No one person will have the same amount or mix. The best thing to do is to stay up on the research, if you are truly interested in the topic, there are several places you can search to find past and current research on Autism and Genetics. Again, any references to other sites in the comments section get blocked by You Tube, so I cannot provide you the sources I use. I provided some of the locations to Stephanie in the past, so maybe she can place them as a link. If you are concerned as to relatives and family members, you may find some, but then again, not all persons with (some) ASD traits reach the level of diagnosis. In my family, one of my (deceased) parents MAY have met diagnosis criteria, but no other of my immediate family. However, I have found several cousins and nephews that were diagnosed. Hope this gives you some insight

@@davef2975 that is very interesting information indeed. There are quite a few family members, on my moms side that would very likely meet the diagnostic requirements of an ASD designation, based on the DSM5. It wasn't until this past year when two of my kids where diagnosed as gifted/autistic/ADHD that our diagnostic pediatrician mentioned the potential of genetic link, and that our knowledge is of that link is still in its infancy. It got my brain thinking about that link, and the fact that ADHD and ASD seem to have a connection to my family that got me wondering more about it. I hope Stephanie does add those links about the research as I would love to look further into it. Granted I know genetics is a tricky topic considering some groups would like to use that information to rid the world of autistic people, and that would be a sad day (in my opinion).

@@ninhydren2321 Merge the words "medical" and "Xpress" together and search for that "dot"page. Let me know if that "works." It is a place I read regularly. The "Autism" area leads to a lot of data and research.

It's not always that clear-cut to be honest; here in Spain for example psychiatrists & psychologists kinda do whatever they want, and they don't tend to codify the conditions they diagnose. Both the DSM and the ICD are taught to med students in college, but there's no requirement to follow one or the other (or any of the two in a consistent or coherent way) once you get your degree. I for example was diagnosed in 2018 with "Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asperger's Syndrome)" which is not a term that exists neither on the DSM-IV, the DSM-IV-TR, the DSM-5, the DSM-5-TR, the ICD-10 nor the ICD-11. "Asperger's" is a term that remains widely in use not so much because of any stipulated adherence to the ICD-10 but just because to the overwhelming majority of people "autism" is still synonymous with higher-support-needs autism or "classic autism"; I'm not fond of the term "Asperger's" myself, but I have no other option but to use it because if I were to tell someone for the first time that I'm autistic they would be hella confused if I used the term "autism" instead of "Asperger's" or "I'm on the spectrum". There is a growing understanding of the autism spectrum, but it's a bizarre understanding that rather than judging "Asperger's" and "classic autism" as obsolete terms no longer needed upholds them as the two completely valid and not outdated at all subcategories that we supposedly can divide the autism spectrum into; hence why my diagnosis is "Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asperger's Syndrome)" despite that not being a term that exists in any diagnostic manual whatsoever.

South Africa uses both because of a lack of resources and Doctors who are specialized Autism infact most South African Doctors are hesitant to diagnose children with Autism because of rhe restrictions and lack of appropriate facilities and the trrend of the government just moving us to schools that just group together children with various disabilities.
