This example is sewers GOLDEN information! Absolutely brilliant brilliant brilliant! Thank you for taking the time to shoot this video and helping us to conquer this very frustrating issue! There was a comment further down this thread (excuse the pun) of someone commenting on material thickness and the difference it would make on your tension etc. I don't think that person looked at your entire video because you DID mention it at the end. Thank you again for this!

Thanks for taking the time to show the results of adjusting the top and bottom tension. Sewing with thicker thread seems to create this problem for me and now its a matter of having patience to adjust.

Of course it does - the thicker the thread, the the more drag for starters from the eye of the needle, then the penetration-hole, material etc, not to mention it's heavier weight overall....

I've always used a lighter, normal weight thread in the bobbin if I use a heavier thread on top, it has always worked for me with top stitching thread, embroidery thread, etc.

My factory manual also mentions decreasing the wraps at the top of the machine coming from the spool. The more wraps the more tension.

Hold on now sir, I've been sewing almost 50 years, your making it harder than it is when it is basic common sense. You are trying to hide the thread twist of a very thick thread inbetween only 2 layers of a fabric weight that just is not thick enough to hide it. Drop down to a thinner thread that is appropriate for what you are sewing. If the thread used must be two different colors and certain parts of the project is only 2 layers of fabric no amount or adjustment will hide the twist, just switch the thread/needle to smaller gauge for those areas, the stitch is fine and well formed, its the fabric that is not thick enough to hide it. Its like your trying to force a big size 10 foot into a size 7 sandal, your toes will hang out the front and heel out the back of the sandal, no way around it, get the right shoe, same principle.

Good point about the choice of thread thickness, etc, but are you really saying that the thread tension setting is nonsense? There is no need to do anything about it because one can fix the issue of having the bottom thread showing on the top of the fabric by selecting a thicker fabric? I doubt the Japanese engineers constructing the Juki machines with adjustable thread tension share your views. However, I am happy you found a solution that works for you!

The thread should have some roundness on the top. If it is straight lying very flat, the tension is too high. It is right to have “mountains “ as you say

Regarding thread tension, you may find this video useful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXqxg5qgaZd6pKs Most users use the yoyo method or drop test to set bobbin thread tension. But in my experience, you need a bit more bobbin thread tension with higher thread thickness, and I normally use 0.5 Newton for Serafil 20. I is a different issue to reduce the variation in height of the lock of the stitch. For a normal lock stitch machine, it will depend of the timing of the feed. For a walking foot machine like yours, the variance may be bigger than a normal sewing machine, but I do not know the specifics for such machines. Be aware, that just changing the thread color of serafil 20 or other kinds of thread will likely change bobbin thread tension. Different batches of same type of thread are different.

Get some really thick artificial plastic leather, it will help you see it more clearly. Test the extremes on the settings and don’t hesitate on trying this because once you have tested the most extreme values, you then gradually narrow it down to the best setting. If this doesn’t work, you have and issue with the selected thread vs needle and need to test for a different fabric, needle + thread combination. As last resort you have a problematical machine, which is unlikely.
