Great video! Should be mentioned too that Vince Gilligan himself directed this particular episode. It's funny because if you go back and listen to the Breaking Bad Insider Podcast where Vince talks about this episode, he said he had a really difficult time shooting this scene (with blocking and where the camera should be) and was really worried that it wouldn't turn out how he envisioned. And then it turns out being one of the more iconic scenes of the show lol

Rewatching the scene, I like how Walter says "I had to tell the DA", when Jesse asks "why did you do it?" Because of course, he has to establish right away that "Gus gave me no choice" is not referring to him poisoning Brock, which he knows is what Jesse is actually talking about
@ironmonkey15124 жыл бұрын
The one where he tells Skyler that he did everything for himself was my favorite. Basically the whole series built up to that.

I think of that moment as Darth Vader done right. Like, I loved Vader's "redemption equals death" scene as a kid, but as an adult I just felt like, given how many innocents he has slaughtered and planets he enslaved, being pushed to save his blood relative at the last minute is too little too late. Walter had to actually make sacrifices to undo a fraction of the harm he had done, he had to fully come clean about the selfishness of his true motivations, and you're left with the sense that probably most of the people he harmed will never forgive him, and that's fair.
@TooSweet353 Жыл бұрын
@@LaneMaxfield Exactly, I think Vader's redemption scene is amazing but not because of what it says about Vader but because of what it says about Luke, while I think it was great writing to have Vader be redeemed by being what led to the destruction of the empire he helped rebuild thus preventing future death and genocide, it still feels too late because well... he still axed countless. It's a good scene but is overrated and not one of the best in fiction judging by the actions that preceeded it.

Damn after your video I noticed all the small details you pointed and not pointed that led me to the conclusion that Walt knows Jessie to perfection so much so that Jessie is literally his little puppet,he knows that the only thing turning Jessie to do risks in his favor are kids,using Pinkman's innocence in combination of his need for justice,and for absolute convincing making himself to be seen as the victim incouraging Jessie to shoot him. And the last part you didn't point out but stood out to me is how conveniently fast Walt asks Jessie where is he going, thus not only convincing Jessie that he isn't the guy who poisoned Brock but getting Jessie on his side so he can finally kill Gus. Jessie Pinkman - mister White is the devil

Love your quote "Writing is all about execution, not content" This is so true because I'll see people say "oh this movie is doing the thing that failed in an earluer movie, therefore its gonna fail too" Maybe the earlier movie just didn't execute it correctly, but that doesn't mean its impossible to do if right. I always see "New Spider Man movie is making the Spider Man 3 mistake of too many villains" The problem with Spider Man 3 wasn't too many villains, its how all of those villains were executed.

Duh, who cares what Cinemasins calls what? And as you said, it works. The use of pronoun works here because at the beginning of the scene Jesse is almost certain that Walt did it, so he gets to the point as boldly as he can, which totally rattles Walt. "Why did you do it?!" And yes of course, it's also a nice tool to use our lack of knowledge of what Jesse is thinking to create tension. Good video tho.
@iamthedanger96024 жыл бұрын
*With Donald trump voice: WROOONG. The tension does not rely on neither jesse shooting walt nor whether walt did it or not. At this point there are like two or three episodes left, so is obvious that Walter won't be killed at this point by any means. As to the second part, there are two mindsets a first time viewer can have: 1. Gus did it: At this point Gus is shown to be superior to Walter in all the possible ways. We have seen how he masterfully manipulates people 100 times smarter than Jesse (and 100 times smarter than the people Walt manipules) and also we see how Walter and Jesse basically hate each other at this point. Also Gus has already been linked to child murder. The first time viewer knows Walter is at his lowest, no resources at all and shitting his pants in fear of Gus. The viewer assumes he is innocent and therefore framed in a way is impossible from him to prove it. Tension derives from how Walt will convince jesse. They used this technique all the time. With tuco (how is season ne walter going to ake this OG to give him his money? NO WAY), at the end of season three (how is walt going to convince Mike... yes, MIKE, not to kill him. NO WAY), etc. And just as then, there is no way in hell walter can resolve this... 2. Walter did it: If the first time viewer is clever enough to assume that Walter did it , then the same problem applies. Walter was the only one that knew about the ricing. And even if Walter manages to convince him otherwise, Jesse is still stubborn and reckless, someone likely not to listen to reason and to act out of anger. Even if Walter spits facts like vomit jesse is likely not to believe him, so then what? Walter is left with no options. The tension derives from the two of them falling apart forever. They are the only ones they could trust, the ONLY ones that could count on each other save their lives, and now that's no longer the case. The tension comes from character relationships, no cheap tricks like the ones you mention. And as I said, there is no way Jesse is shooting him, so if they break apart forever, how is walter going to continue for the other two episodes (that we now for a fact are coming) without jesse not killing him? is Walter going to kill Jesse? And if he does, how? jesse is the one with the gun, and we know it is loaded because walter also has to deal with any sicario coming to his house. The headline is: How on earth will the writers solve this? If the viewer is clever enough o guess the truth then he is trying to solve this in his mind while Walter and Jesse scream at each other. The writers use even real life info to trick even the smart viewer. THAT'S how you create tension. Is not a simple as "is jesse is gointg to shoot? I love your videos but this analysis is way too shallow and basic. Tension here doesn't come from writing 101 techniques like hiding information or wheter the character will die or not. Let that to game of thrones or the walking dead. Here the tension comes from the relationship and the utter hopelessness of a character whose tricks have worked before but are proven once and again to be too small for the REAL game. The second-time-viewer understands that the reality of this scene is about Walt just having one last bullet (just like hank against the cousins) and that if he doesn't shoot well, he's done. When Jesse asks "why you did it" is not to capitalize the info. He does it because he already knows and wants Walter to admit it. Jesse thinks Walter thinks that he is too dumb to figure out his trick, and at the moment of noticing that jesse in fact knew, Walter will break and admit it. But Walter is already prepared and is ready to act accordingly. Is not about keeping information from the viewer. Is giving it all blatanly. The tension comes from the effects of the mistery (Walter and Jesse becoming enemies), not the mistery itself.
