For me it was tied. I really like SG-1, but SG-A is at least their equal in quality and humor and dynamic, if not longevity. They really could have used an extra couple of seasons - I think it would have been fun.

From one theater movie, seeing what they did with 'SG1' and then 'Atlantis' is, to me, some of the best work ever created. You can't help but get into the story line(s), and the characters (Even the ones you DIDN't like), just grew on you, and seeing what happened 'Next!' kept it going with an enthusiasm very few Series ever attained. Wonderful video, and a hearty 'Thank you!' :-D

I was a bit reluctant with SGU too because it wasn't the "more SG-1, more Atlantis" I needed at the time. Watch it again without watching SG-1/SGA first. It's perfect.

SG1 was wonderful ! and Atlantis is perfectly done as a spinoff it took the ready build world material and had its own story with the occational slight cross over, and mention to the other shows made it so that it all FELT REAL and it was immersive as a part of a larger whole. you could make a mini series that was edgy and or pure horror, because there are teams that just got obliderated, in the orginal show and atlantis and you really could have horror story. where the feeling of safety, the air is very light atmosphere, while in the SGC and you get a good sence that this team is full of professionals and may have some fricktion but work very well. and all is fine they go through the brief and go on their mission. and after that it just evolves in to a horror story. where the team does EVERYTHING right but its just not enough and they manage to seal the gate or what ever the threat may be. Edit: even if they are going to loose thier lives they need to make sure its not for nothing.

SG-1's pilot specifically was a little more "edgy and naked", but outside of that the show's early seasons did have a more grounded military science fiction tone. It wasn't without its humor, but overall it was more adult tonally. By the time you got to its later seasons and Atlantis and writers like Joe Mallozzi gained prominence, Stargate had essentially become a comic book franchise tonally, even making reference in the show to parallels between the cast of Atlantis and the Fantastic Four. The first four or five seasons of SG-1 might have paired well with SGU, but the stylistic clash between the more cartoonish later seasons of Atlantis against SGU would have been pretty drastic, and I don't think "SyFy" was interested in that, especially after Battlestar earned them so many accolades

SG-1 and SG-A were modernist, episodic shows. SGU was postmodernist, arc based. Not surprising that that those who loved it originally, wouldn't like the opposite type show. Competent heroes solving problems vs. angsty incompetents wringing their hands.

I think SGU season 2 was good because it got "less edgy", widening its appeal more to all the existing Stargate fans who didn't want "Battlestar Galactica but with stargates". My two cents. But I also agree that SGU would have been more successful if it had stayed on the same network concurrently with a 6th and 7th season of SGA. But those were all executive decisions made by people who were feeling the pressure from spending 10s of thousands of dollars on small plastic props that cosplayers make in their caves with boxes of scraps.

This franchise would have been more successful and healthy without MGM's bankruptcy. SGA was too good to get canceled, could've easily ran 10 years like SG1. I have more appreciation for SGU now than when it first aired but still believe SGA was way better.

AWW I miss Atlantis. Here's the thing, I refuse to watch SGU cause someone mentioned that there's nothing about Atlantis. And I'll admit, I wouldn't mind if they try something new (or reboot), as long as there's something about atlantis. Also, I've been thing about a way that they could help Stargate, but not completely reboot it. Like, picture a prequel, like for example they can do adventures from the very earliest of the Stargates with the Ancients starring. How they designed the gates, how the alliance between the four great races began, and what went wrong. (Probably each of their egos getting too big for each other) Or, my personal favorite opinion, the ancient's time in Pegasus with ATLANTIS! They could really play a little with that idea too, show the fallen city of Emege (the rubbled city on Athos) or maybe how the wraith came into power or how they were made (cause I'm not buying Carson's evolved after the Ancient's came, cause then I'd agree with the Legacy books explanation). I think that would be a good call to make, that way it doesn't feel... I don't know, pathetic I guess. It would be better than a hard reboot, based on what I'd seen from previous fans of other franchises acting to reboots. But this is my opinion, I don't really know the recent developments of Stargate, but if my fellow Travelers know anything or share my opinion, please comment and let me know 🙏🥰🥰

I'd LOVE a prequel series with the Ancients. perhaps circa Alteran escape to the Milky Way to leave their religious "nuts" (for lack of a better word) behind to become the Ori. Pick up where that scene in Ark of Truth left off, where the guy shows off a notebook drawing of a Stargate.
@brx8r
@brx8r 21 күн бұрын
@@Genesis8934 I agree there's a lot in the lore that could be explored, with several alien races. It would be amazing to see that. I think it's an incomplete idea to do a whole show set in historical times, but if you're going to builds the sets and props from those eras then showing a substantial amount of that would be fantastic. If they do a show like that, I'd want the Stargate device itself to really shine as a hero ingredient of that dish.
@brx8r
@brx8r 21 күн бұрын
I think what works for Stargate, going back to the original movie, is combining ancient elements with modern ones. I'm reminded of the Terminator franchise where they did the Salvation movie set entirely in the future war - and it lost something at the heart of the franchise which was the juxtaposition of the two time periods. I would want the modern characters to be in it somehow, either through time travel, or simply having the story play out by switching between the past and the present (a little bit like what Lost did, except the link to the flashbacks is not a single character's memories, it's something else).
@Genesis8934
@Genesis8934 21 күн бұрын
@@brx8r Agreed. But I also think they probably be towing the line between "wokeism" (others' terms) and traditional scifi if they did a prequel series. On the one hand, traditional scifi provides a lends with which to view and examine ourselves (humanity) through the portrayals of caricatures of different aspects of humanity. Star Trek did this with mono-cultures in their earlier days: extremely logical Vulcans, greedy Ferengi, deceitful Romulans, aggressive Klingons, etc. They eventually dropped the monoculture aspect in later series, but overall each new species there represents some trait of humanity so that we can look at ourselves and go, "Is that a good thing? Or is that a bad thing?" With a Stargate "Ancient" prequel as I described, we could very well have a scifi show where religion takes the role of a central tension, but that also might be weird to have depending on how our current religious tensions shape up (and there are some right now all around the world!).
@VinylBeta1
@VinylBeta1 20 күн бұрын
@@Genesis8934 Well I'm glad you agree on my prequel thoughts with the Ancients, but I don't think there needs to be a problem with religion. If you're aiming for an Ori deal, yes totally plausible for religion to take a big role. But, as you said, given the current religious tension right now, and the fact that the Ori was by all accounts the downfall of the series, that and the fact they cancelled both the Atlantis season six and the 'already promised' movie, I think the safest move for them to continue Prequel based, would be to focus more on the Pegasus Ancients. (Not because it would be in my personal favorite selection or anything :] ) If you look at the fans point of view, a lot of people, SGA fans specifically, have not paid any attention towards SGU, and that could come as an advantage to a new creation of Stargate. Picture this: The Asurans leave Earth in Atlantis many moons ago for whatever reason (It was theorized that they left to escape the plague, but since it was theorized by Daniel and not official, they could use the oppotunity to play with that) and after arriving began planting the human seeds and exploring their new mini galaxy. And this is where it could get interesting, they can play around with how the wraith came to be. The Legacy books which are canon, claimed that the Ancients created the Wraith by experimenting on humans to make themselves immortal. And Beckett theorized that they evolved when the Iratus bug fed from humans and evolved. now, either one can work, but Disney has taught us that Scar in the lion king had 3 dfferent ways of how he got his scar, so they could take a page out of Disney's book on weird lore and go in a completely different direction. Now this is where they can play around even better, they could play a little with the relationship between the Wraith and the Ancients. And in one of the conon books: Reliquary, they team comes across video footage of an Ancient that resembled John Sheppard, and since Emege would still be standing during the times the Ancient had dominion over Pegasus, there could be a Teyla look alike in this too. Then there can be a lot of conflict that turns into the great Ancient-Wraith war. And then say they continue the war for over a season and by the end of season 1 they decide to retreat and sink the city, they can begin to play around with what happened after they returned to earth. The people who stayed behind, those who decided to ascend, they can play with the relationship between Morgan and Merlin. There are a lot of opportunities they'd be missing out of it they just randomly reboot the entire stargate network.

SGUs issue was that even though they were stranded on the other side of the universe, for the first half of season one, they had technology to switch bodies and have earthly drama with romances and cheating or just good times with their families and the characters didn't really have to deal with the fact that they are stranded in space SGU started to be way better since the second half of season 1 but by then most people have droped it, I guess

It also felt so far removed from SG-1 and Atlantis. And what I mean by that is, if you take SGU in isolation. You could never imagine Apophis or Anubis being the Villains in that show. They would feel so out of place. And those over the top yet believable Villains were a big part of its charm.

tbh, though I love Atlantis, the reveal of those Season6 episode descriptions were quite underwhelming and just rehashed a lot of the same old stuff and gimmicks and plots and enemies. If it were to happen, it needed to be a soft reset/reboot. Sure, keep the cast, but move-on from like, all the foes and time travel and stuff.
