So helpful! Thank you! I actually originally had a warmer color in my wedding ring, a vintage style halo, then when the setting had to be re-done I had a Colorless put in. Long story short, ended up going back to the warmer color. It fit the style of the thing better. Took me time to realize exactly what you said. Color alone doesn’t represent beauty. Very helpful video! My engagement ring is a 2ct I colour, but, when I decide to buy a large diamond, I will shop for a K+ colour, The warmth is intriguing, & subtly beautiful: as though a little candlelight, or a piece of a sunbeam got trapped inside the stone.

Hi grog, Moisannite happen to be very dispersize gem stones. Bear in mind they don't have the strength or durability of diamond but this is also reflected in the cost as well.

Be careful with moisannite and anything oily like hand creams, salad dressing, etc. It will ruin the sparkle of the stone. Moisannite is porous and will soak up the oil with a permanent affect.

This was so helpful. I’m waiting for my engagement ring to be made..and really wanted a higher grade color but the cost jumped up significantly for the carat size. My choice came down between a 2.51 vvs 1 H (bigger spread 1.43) & 2.8 vvs1 J- I chose the 2.5 because the very slightly warm tone the J gave me would bug me in the long run. Hopefully I chose right, but this video was very helpful!

I love the sparkling warmth of a K diamond. I find whiter colour diamonds beautiful to contour a colour stone like an emerald, a ruby or a sapphire. For a solitary diamond I definitely prefer a K.

I prefer a warmer diamonds, It looks so good on my skin tone. My diamonds are all H's. I would have preferred a J but my husband upgraded my ring set by surprise so I'm not complaining. And the H still has a noticeable warmth to it I noticed it anyway. Its noticeable in different lighting.

Funny how beauty is relative. I've never been attracted to pure white stones. They're beautiful don't get me wrong, personally Ive always thought they resembled cubic zirconia. I love the touch of color, be it a little warm or grey/blue. I'm a gem lover, love them all lol Currently I'm looking for a 2-2.5 emerald cut. I'll take the higher color but not lower clarity.

I had no clue about these dimond properties. Over a decade ago, when I got engaged to my husband we went dimond shopping for an engagement ring. Most regular jewelry stores did not carry D or E or even F diamonds. I remember my husband making all the questions about price difference. I got an I color and it’s so beautiful. Later we updated to a bigger size but still I color. Usually H color is the highest they will manage to get according to the sales manager at our city.

Thanks for your feedback! It does sometimes seem like the visual difference between certain colors are often wider than others. For example, many of our customers notice the difference between I-J colored diamond more than G-H colored diamonds. It's not always the case, but seems like a trend.

That's a good question. Although IGI doesn't have the reputation that GIA has, from my understanding, IGI has been the main laboratory where suppliers are sending their lab grown diamonds to be certified and from our experience, IGI is pretty on par for the most part. We at Good Old Gold can send a diamond to GIA for a second opinion if you have any concerns on a diamond you might be considering. If so, there's even a good chance we have access to that same diamond and can offer it to you for less than the listed price. Been doing so since 2001. Good intentions however is no replacement for solid knowledge and facts which is why I produce these videos. More important to your purchasing decision is the optics of the diamond you are considering no matter the shape. GIA Ex's vary in their appearance as do AGS Ideals.

The EGL "J" diamond should appear whiter. In the past, we've seen EGL "J" colored diamonds look a grade or two lower compared to a GIA graded diamond, however we have not seen them drop to as low as 4 grades. There are also EGL diamonds that are comparable to GIA graded diamonds. It's really on a diamond-to-diamond basis and therefore the diamond would be something a reputable jeweler would have to analyze in person in order to offer you a solid opinion on the specific diamond in question.

The color in a "J" colored diamond shouldn't prevent the diamond from sparking. Sparkle usually has more to do with the "cut quality". You could have a D - IF, but if the cut is not great and there is significant light leakage, it's brilliance will be lackluster. Although many might assume otherwise, this often occurs in diamonds that are graded GIA Triple Excellent graded (as demonstrated in this video) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJjUlZWZdqtgjcU . Hopefully, the diamond you ordered is stunning. As far as telling if a fancy colored how can you tell if it’s been treated?

That's a great question. Usually the price it's being offered for gives it away. However there are times when we have sent our diamonds to GIA to have them determine if it was radiated or not. So if you have accesses to a lab report, it should note wither it was treated or not. My suggestion is that when in doubt, buy it as if it were treated (play the odds to your favor).

Are there ever times where the body color is more colorless than the face up color? What would cause this? Also how does the face down color grading work in certain shapes like pear and marquise where more color is at the tips versus belly or is the color distribution even face down???

That's a good question.. Other than a color reflection coming from an external stimuli, we have not experienced a diamond that shows more color in the body compared the face up view. The brilliance emitted from the face-up view should help hide some of the diamonds true body color. But if a diamond lacks in brilliance, the color will show up more from the face up view as there will be less distraction. Regarding fancy shapes - if the diamond is face down, the diamond won't be emitting that brilliance, so the diamonds color distribution is technically even. However usually the thicker/larger a diamond is, the easier it is to see the color saturation. So the tips should appear whiter compared to the belly of the diamond even though the substance is technically the same color. It's sort of similar to stained glass. You can have two pans of stained glass that are the same exact color but when those pans are placed together, it will look a shade darker compared to one standing alone. There can be other variables that can come into play, but the explanation above should be the most common example that I can think of.

That's a great question. It's a matter of personal preference. Assuming the cut quality is equal, it mostly comes down to wither you prefer the size or color advantage? I'd personally go for the larger diamond in this case, but that's just me ; ) Also keep in mind that we should be able to beat anyone's prices when comparing apples to apples. So if you are looking at diamonds online or whatever, a quick email to [e-mail] with the link of the diamond your interested in should save you some $$ for that same exact diamond as long as we have access to it as well.

That's a good question.. Color is a matter of personal preference and everyone has their different tolerance levels. For me, if your setting the diamond in a 4-prong white gold pendant and didn't want to break the bank, I'd recommend a near colorless, decent SI graded diamond. If your setting the diamond in a bezel or yellow gold setting, you might be able to go slightly lower in color and still be content. Hi baknforth, It is not a secret that EGL grading is liberal. Should you stay away from it altogether? Not necessarily as long as you have an expert grader holding your hand during the process who can inform you what the most likely conservative grade is and that you are actually paying a fair price for it. In times past we have called in EGL graded diamonds and when comparing their price to conservatively graded diamonds already via GIA or AGS turned out to either be comparable value, ...

Grading begins with the letter D, (omitting A, B, C) to ensure that there is no confusion with any of the previous terminology that was used prior to the standardization of the color grading scale. The scale goes all the way down to Z and then after Z, they become fancy colored.

As long as you are not too color sensitive, the color should work. We well many "J" color diamonds to customers who want to achieve a certain size without breaking the bank. I'd have to see the "I3" clarity however in order to give you my feedback on that part. Many I3 diamonds have inclusions that are easily noticeable to the naked eye. However sometimes people get lucky and find one's that are more forgiving. It's really on a diamond to diamond bases.

"K" colored diamonds usually have a faint yellow tint to them. Sometimes they have a brownish tint. But regardless of the color, the intensity will remain faint at "K" color and in my opinion will look closer to white than brown in color.

It's indeed very difficult to see the difference in colorless diamonds unless you are very color sensitive and/or you go pretty far out of your way (such as placing them upside-down and in front of a white background).
