I hadn’t realised what a good writer Dick Francis is. Now I know he’s not just a good writer but also wonderfully capable of creating plots and characters a reader really cares about. This is really excellent in every way, and wonderfully read as well. Bravo!

Excellent story and great research…I re-travelled the VIA rail trail stop by stop across Canada. Brilliantly done. One small detail that did itch like a burr under the saddle : the reference the VIA Rail as the ‘V-I-A’…just sounded so odd as a train travelling Canadian! Looking for more from this writer!

That’s exactly how I feel listening to P.G Wodehouse when the British reader, speaking for an American character of the criminal class, says, “Yay” for “Yeah”. It’s jarring. It disturbs the flow of the story. By the way, “Yeah” in America is pronounced like bear, without the “r”.☺️

I tell you one of the things I _love_ about Dick Francis's characters; they indulge in a lot of self-examination and introspection, they're constantly filled with self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy. It gives them warmth, it makes them real; our own doubts and inadequacies reach out to theirs and we feel more in touch, and in harmony with, the world around us.
@ofthedarknessthemoonlight54122 жыл бұрын
That's a brilliant and absolutely accurate comment. I've loved his work for years, and was very pleased to find this. I've also always loved the fact that no matter what he's writing about - the wine industry, jewelry making, and aviation are a few areas that spring to mind - his research is meticulous, and he brings those subjects to life as much as he enlivens his characters. He's truly a gifted writer.

Franics' early books, where he is a steeple chase jockey and then a couple books later where he is a retired jockey doing undercover investigative work at a corrupt track are just incomparable. Even though the books are very old, my library, where I just retired from had to periodically reorder new copies because the supply is so dog-eared and worn out. A testimony to this author's popularity.

Having read all of Dick Francis’s books twice, listening to these audibles is a real treat. As a Canadian though, it was very annoying to hear the conductor’s overuse of ‘eh’. We do say that on occasion but not nearly as much as used here and if became old very fast.

As I'm a big fan of railroading and of Dick&Mary Francis, this was always one of my favorites. Thoughts: 1. Although I've read the book twice, listening brought out many details I had forgotten or must have glossed over. 2. Tony Britton did American/Canadian accents better than most English actors I've heard... but he goofed on "VIA Rail," which is generally pronounced like the word "via" rather than "V.I.A."... and he didn't get the cadence of the Canadian "eh." He put in a stop before the "eh" and emphasized the word, whereas a Canadian would say it on a falling tone without a pause. Try it on this ancient joke: "What's a Canadian's favorite jazz number?" "Take the train, eh."

In the Canadian system there is no "legal inquest" (as in the UK). In BC the Medical Examiner makes a private adjudication of the cause of any "unusual" death. Only atypicaly will this "verdict" be communicated to third parties, and press rarely comment on 'suicides'.

Parisian TV, you said, "If you like these audio books, you can donate to me so that I have more motivation to upload more books." Do you own the rights to these books? If so, you deserve monetary support. I'll wait for your answer.
@Loruca3 жыл бұрын
How interesting. I made this comment a month ago and have received no answer to my question. I can only assume, therefore, that this is a pirate's channel, and that they are trying to make money off of somebody else's intellectual property. This piracy goes on all the time, of course, with all the talking books that proliferate here on KZbin, but the way this person is asking for donations takes the piracy to a whole new level. One thing I've noticed about Dick Francis's uploads: his estate is usually fairly vigilant in shutting down the channels that don't have the right to upload or otherwise broadcast his books. I thought I would check up on this channel to see if it's still in existence, and it surprised me to see that it is. One of these days the Francis Police will discover this channel and it will be all over, so everybody listen as much as you can, but don't donate to this guy.

@@AB-nr8cu I'd consider donating if it's legit. It's two months now. I've spent all of this time, sitting with this comment open on my laptop, waiting, waiting, waiting. I only get up to eat and pee, and even then, it's a close call. It's too bad, really, because my neighbours' recycling has piled up so badly, and I haven't been able to do anything about it, but I really do believe in choosing my battles.

Excellent narration of one of Francis' best novels. Beware, though, of a passage detailing extreme cruelty to animals (at about 8h 48m). Francis, perhaps wanting shock value, or perhaps at the advice of his publisher, seems to have traded sex for torture-killing of pets.

The mere possibility leaves me unwilling to ever read or hear Felix' books in future.
@judithmcinnes12643 жыл бұрын
@@dianeodify you could be right. I haven't read any of Felix's efforts, as my sister says they aren't to the same standard. Our library service is very slowly acquiring DF books as downloadable audiobooks, so I shall have to be patient. It's an interesting legal question - I have all the DF books in hard copy format, so I consider that I have paid my dues to know the story. But I suspect that publishers would argue that by creating audiobooks they had "added value" by having them narrated, and thus they feel it's morally right that I pay again. As I have had an accident and can no longer read hard copy books, I will be relying more on libraries, and YT to help me re-visit books I have on my shelves.
