Dick Smith is the best Makeup artist who has ever lived, Before he died, his colleagues got him a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Most people don't know that he literally pioneered ALL of modern makeup. From designing the colors used for early TV for Max Factor, Creating state of the art prosthetic techniques which are used by ALL artist today doing this kind of work, and even inventing the artificial blood used in every film and TV show. I have been a professional special effects makeup artist for over 35 years, and literally every thing that I do is based on his teachings, From the way that I sculpt, make the molds, Color the makeup and the adhesives that I use to apply it were all his discoveries and inventions. I can't think of another field of endeavor where one person has contributed so very much. It's just amazing that in spite of being so prolific, he would stop and explain his techniques to ANYONE who asked. He also started a precedence of "No Secrets" which all makeup artists live by to this very day.

How much collaboration on the ongoing DS, at that time, existed between Dick, and the in-hose artist, Vinnie Loscalzo? I wouldn't imagine that Dick is any longer with us. Now, with the story sequence where Barnabas and Julia are propelled to the mid 1990's, I was most gratified with Nancy Barrett's makeup. Her transformation, from the contemporaneous Carolyn to a Fiftyish woman was SPOT-ON, to how Nancy had actually aged in real life, into our REAL-LIFE 1990's. Now that does take some wizardry, for an artist to map out potential wrinkles and sags, and for those to be accurately duplicated. Would Vinnie, or would Vinnie and Dick working together, have performed this sterling, immaculate, and outstanding work upon Nancy's face? And, which artist performed the job on Roger Davis' face, when he portrayed the centenarian version of Charles Delaware Tate? Who devised Quentin's bounteous sideburns? And, what about Evan Handley's hideous mutilation/maiming? When Jonathan passed on, he very much resembled a slightly younger version of the makeup that he wore, about 45 years before, portraying the aged Barnabas. To assist the artist(s), he probably had to bring in photos of himself as a little boy, an older boy, then a younger man, for them to see how he matured up to that point to discern the changes, then project onwards from there.

The makeup was so good that I thought it was a completely different person playing the aged Barnabus Collins.

Oh, was Dick ever consulted on Leonard Nimoy's ears, for the later versions of Spock? He dreaded the earlier ear points, as they caused him just enough pain, that perennially hounded him with such ongoing difficulty, that made his accurate portrayal of Spock, almost impossible.
