How has the reliability been?

I used the one on my boat for about 4 years before I sold the boat, and I have another installed in my class B RV as a primary heating device and the only Issue I've found with them is that they can be a bit finicky lighting them for the first few times after not being used for the warm half of the year. One important thing of note is Dickinson changed the fan on the newer models to a much quieter fan that is far more energy efficient but moves much less air and doesn't heat nearly as well as the old model. I had the old version on the boat and the new in my RV, so I positively know the difference. This is probably why there are so many conflicting reports of how effective this heater is. Dickinson still uses the old version fan on their diesel heaters so you can still order the old fan separately from dickinson ( #01-031) and change it out if you find you need it. The new fan is just a cheap, find anywhere, 3' computer case fan which uses next to nothing in amperage and is quiet so it does have its upsides, but if you want to heat a larger space you'll need to change out the fan.

Cool, I just installed a propex furnace, in my cabin bedroom, now I am considering something for the main room of the cabin. I would probably switch out the fan anyway for a 24 volt version (cabin runs on 24 volt).

Wow. After watching a video where two very obvious city folk were testing a "mr. death-buddy" inside a tent all night with no ventilation, it's a GIANT relief to find some common/uncommon sense out there. Thanks for the great video and review. After living aboard two sailboats, multiple cabins, R'V's, trailers, and now my dream-van... I'll definitely be buying one of these units. Happy trails, smooth roads, and favorable seas, Sir!

Great little video thank you so much! This is the 2nd video I've seen about these cool little propane heaters - both onboard boats. I really relate with how these give the semblance of a fireplace, because that's exactly what I'm looking for (plus these are vented, which is a must in my mind). I want to put one of these in a small cabin, instead of a boat or an RV, and I admire the stainless steel construction and appearance, let alone the performance of these little stoves. I can envision installing one of these in such a fashion as to be able to add a little hearth below, and a mantel above, with about 4" trim boards on either side! This would give me the perfect little fireplace for my cabin build. I could put a flat screen tv over my little fireplace, across from a daybed sofa with a coffee table in between. Man I'm excited! I think I could heat my little cabin easy using about one gallon of propane a day or less, or about $1 - $2 dollars a day, which isn't that much and the thermostat would mean I would never wake up cold, come home to cold, and not have to cut and chop wood, eh? Thanks again my friend! Peace.

There are a couple things to know about this stove...... the outside vent cap needs their protective bracket ..specifically if the heater is near the front .. other wise your jib sheet will get under the cap and it really chews up the line ...and it keeps your hands somewhat off a hot cap.. .. second issue.. it comes with a really cheap and noisy fan .. small motor.. metal fan blade .. there is really no heat issue at the bottom so I found a nice quiet fan and replaced it.. cut the noise by 70% .. just measure the available area and fit the fan .. I use that every day in the cooler weather .. ambiance and heat .. great unit .

They also have solid fuel versions for those who are wondering. It can burn small pieces of wood, pellets and coal. And has a very similar aesthetic as the propane ones. Oh and they also have diesel ones.

Note: this heater draws fresh air from the outside, not from inside the cabin.. it has a co-axial pipe : fresh air in, and hot air out through the center. So you cannot suffocate yourself running the heater with the cabin closed up tight.. not from lack of oxygen anyway.. although it does have an oxy depletion sensor built in. Also, you can easily adjust the flame at ANY intermediate point, including very very low., you are not restricted to only the 2 click stop hi/low gas settings. The fan on the smaller model is quieter.. but still makes noise on the highest speed.

Many are asking about propane consumption. There is 91,333 btu in one gallon of propane. You can do the math on your respective heater to calculate fuel usage.

I had a small balck tarp that i layed out and rolled up the edge to create a 6 inch edge 2 ft long wall about a foot away from the chimney stack on the north side and no blowout with the furnace while sailing on saturday. I made sure i still has proper ventilation so it seemed to help - it may be my boat design but in closer inspection the vent is a bit bend back due to people stepping on it thru-out the years i think that dickinson vent guard with one quarter panel on it may be the solution - I will install it to see - stay tuned again - also when looking at the manual again it appears i have the P12000 same as yourself

I don't know if it's the same now, but the older model P-12000 (like the one in the video) has the same size (length) burner as the P-9000. I own both models (older units). Save some money and get the P-9000. Also, both older models (not sure about now) have four circular punch-outs in the firebox that enhance the outflow of flue gasses. I've put stainless steel plugs in most (or all) of these, and have their-by improved greatly the heat output of my units with no issues what-so-ever. In my older models, there is still an area behind the cutouts for gases to adequately flow up the flue. I have done this for years. I'm not sure how newer models work in this regard. However, I'm NOT recommending this modification. I'm just saying it's worked fine for me. Judge for yourself, and make your own decisions. I would not recommend having the heaters fired up while leaving the door open.

You have a blanket right against heater, dangerous. Also I would instal a sheet of stainless steel on the right side wall to prevent combustion fire because of you installing unit in corner. Safety first. Great units but failure is always a possibility. Good Luck, Vinny 🇺🇸

As I type this reply the Dickenson 12000 I have installed in the RV I live in has been running since 8:00 pm last night, roughly ten and a half hours. I can touch the sides and top. This is exactly why I shot a video of it and posted it on youtube; It's nothing like a typical wood or gas fireplace. There are good and bad things about this design. It's very safe but you can't cook on it. In fact, you can't even keep a drink warm on it. I know. I tried. If the fan isn't running to push heat into the living space the heat will just go out the 1" exhaust tube and convection will keep pulling cooler external air in though the 3" stainless flex tube, so even the "chimney" pipe only gets uncomfortably hot to the touch.

Heater is nice but don't count on it for real cold nights. We are boondocking near Toronto ON where temps can reach extreme cold status. Have a backup like the big buddy and you should do just fine. Warm the place up with big buddy and crank the Dickinson with fan on high. Don't forget wool blankets/duvets are better than Goose down. Hot water bottle too!

I have a fairly insulated S and S 9.5 truck camper( built-in Kalspel Montana) and want to replace/remove the non-efficent Atwood RV furnace and my portable electric oil radiator..... I have already installed a fantastic ceiling fan for efficiency .... I live in the camper for about three days a week while nursing about 1hr from where we live. I have access to shore power at night but want to be more efficient on and off grid.... Typical winter night gets down to -12C but not much lower and at the moment a portable electric oil radiator on low keeps the camper about 13 C at night. I feel the 9000 would be plenty and I would vent it out the back wall. Your thoughts appreciated... Donny RN/carpenter/mechanic :)

I've also been using one in my RV for 5 years or so. Here's how I handle below freezing conditions in my van; I use the furnace (it's a Suburban so very similar to yours) to bring the interior temp up quickly (5 minutes or so) when I first get "home" and then use the Newport to maintain the temp. It's not unusual for me to leave the Newport running for the entire weekend if the weather is craptastic and I just want to idle the weekend away reading etc. My RV is virtually uninsulated so you should be fine. The only issue I see for you is running the vent out the back wall which is less than ideal because the intake part of the vent will pull in the exhaust again and cause it to extinguish itself frequently if it isn't reasonably vertical. At a guess the combined intake/exhaust system relies on convection to pull the fresh air in. My only other suggestion is don't mess around; get the 12000. Hope this helps, cheers!

Thanks for the review. I just installed a P9000 in our 30' sailboat, and am very happy with it. I'd be interested in knowing how you mounted your propane tank. I went with a Trident 17lb composite bottle, and mounted it on the pushpit above the transom, along with solenoid, regulator etc. No locker, but used gas tight fittings for where propane hose and wires penetrate the fibreglass in the cockpit. Would be interested in where/how you mounted your tank and fittings.

@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 10 жыл бұрын
One of my neighbors has a P12000 like mine and it is just as loud on high, so the larger Newports obviously use a different fan from the smaller versions. I should point out that the noise generated is partly from the fan blades and airflow through the ducting inside the heater so changing to a different motor and fan would not make a big difference unless it moved less air on the higher settings. I never really use my heater on high anyways unless I want a quick blast of hot air to get things heated up fast so I don't consider it a negative. I've just started watching the videos on your channel with your van and I think it's awesome! I like how your P9000 fits in.

Justin has explained his setup a bit but hasnt gone in depth about the heater as much as you did also I wanted to see what several people think of these and everyone seems to love them. The only downside I can even find with them is the settings high and low. I do wish you had more control over the heat or even better yet some sort of thermostat would be nice. But I do think im going to get one now, So thank you very much for the review. So it’s basically a Mr. heater that doesn’t cause condensation inside your RV……???? and most of your efficiency still goes out your roof vent. If I were to have one of those, I would make sure that I had a exhaust tube that was in a S shape so that it was longer before it went out the roof. Therefore most of the heat will be kept inside of the trailer and radiated off the exhaust tube.

Thanks for the informative review. Looking at installing the 9000 in a fish house I’m building. I will have electric heated floor mats and the 9000 for heat. Mn winters on the lake can obviously be pretty extreme. It’s spray foam insulated so I’m thinking with the 2 heat sources I should be ok. Would you possibly know if the chimney could be ran 1’ vertically and then out the wall horizontally instead of up and through the roof. I would like to install under a window (insulated)in the center of the house so I would prefer to go through the wall. Any chance you could supply a link for the boat store where I could purchase? Thanks!

No, a 90 deg bend that close will definately be impossible, and in any case you should not run the exhaust horizontally. Keep in mind the blower on the unit is to circulate the interior air around the firebox and thus heating it; the exhaust exiting the combustion chamber relies on convection which in turn draws in fresh air. I'm not positive what Dickinson's instructions are but I've seen a quite a number of marine installations where the have run the exhaust and cap as much as 45 deg from vertical without a problem, but going any more than that would be inviting something stupid to happen. I buy all my stuff from a Trotec marine here on the island so I can't help you with shopping unless you live here. As far as I know they only do walk in sales and business accounts.

What a lot of fun to have a boat! I'll trade you a week in my RV for a week in your boat? Thanks for the review, nicely done, and I appreciate your honest feedback. I was looking for a small stove for my RV. The Dickenson Newport Solid Fuel Wood stove was also a nice option. The 9000 model may be overkill for a small 22 ft RV. I would love to know how you installed your stove. What kind of insulation you put on wall, ground, ceiling around chimney, etc. How did you attach it to your wall? In RVs, the walls are thin 1/8" luan plywood, so I have to devise a strategy. I like it up on the wall, makes a lot of sense to keep the floor free of clutter. I am also puzzled by where the heat is coming from? Glass is a thermal insulator, not very conductive. Is it coming out of bottom only, or also from sides, glass, chimney, top? You said that chimney flue has smoke going upward from inner flue, and fresh air coming in from outside cylinder of flue (encircling the smoke ring). Is this sufficient air circulation for stove or does it require a vent cut out anywhere? What about stove eating up your oxygen supply as you sleep, and emitting Co2/CM /Smoke residue inside your bedroom? This is of great concern, since I RV solo and with pets. I might not wake up from my sleep!!! Thanks again for a great demo, much appreciated!

We are looking for something in our sunroom as my mom is living her last mo/yrs in it. We just installed a large pellet stove in our fireplace but the heat is not making it to her side. Running the celining fans are helping some. The space heaters are running up our energy bill. So we are looking into something like this for her. This is my first time seeing anything this small to heat. So my knowledge is slim on the topic. What would be your thoughts on this? Possibly pellet run brands would be better for us

These units are excellent for smaller vehicles such as RVs or boats 40' or less, but might not work with a larger interior space. I think your suspicions are correct and you would be better off with something else. Perhaps a wall mounted propane heater (Dyna-Glo found at Home Depot), a Cubic Mini wood stove, a Dickinson diesel heater, or even a portable kerosene heater; Just remember these all need good ventilation. Electric heat is convenient and safe, but too expensive to use regularly.

These could be made so much more efficient IMO. What if you had a coiled tube in there with both ends exiting the stove and keeping the stove sealed and hooked up a little blower motor to one end of the tube blowing hot air out the other end. That would make this 50 times more efficient. Would probably get so warm in there after about 15 minutes you'd have to shut it off and open a window.
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 8 жыл бұрын
+Brad Haas I thought of doing something similar so I could get hot water... With the existing fan running most of the heat was captured and very little heat escaped out the exhaust so it's actually quite efficient already. The combustion chamber is encased by the ductwork that the fan cycles the interior air thorough so Dickinson has already kind of done what you have suggested though it is hard to tell from my video.

Love the review! Can you show more I depth how you wired the 12volt bottom? Did it come WITH the wall plug to run the fan or did you have to find the AC adapter & wire it yourself? My contractor didn't send anything to plug the unit in. It's just 2 wires sticking out of the bottom! Also, the exhaust pipe sticks of the side of my tiny house about 4"-6". How do you recommend shortening it down to mount the cap flush?? Thanks again!!!
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 9 жыл бұрын
crazzie7 No, the heater does not come with a wall plug as it's designed for use in vehicles such as boats and RVs: Boats/RVs have a 12v panel to wire the heater into. The two wires sticking out the bottom are simply pos(red) and neg(black) 12 V. My heater is mounted in my sail boat so I just ran 2 wires from my 12v breaker panel and soldered them to the leads sticking out of the heater. Unfortunately you are going to have to get a small 110v ac to 12v dc adapter and wire it in to your heater to power your fan. Cutting flex pipe can be tricky as it likes to unravel and bind blades when you cut it. I suggest either having someone spot weld on either side of where you are cutting the 3" stainless flex pipe, or do it slowly and carefully with a good quality hacksaw blade. The inner tube is solid 1" so it's easy to cut. I worked in the custom exhaust industry for many years so I am no stranger to cutting flex tube 1" to 10" dia. Don't clamp it in a vise and hit it with a power cutting tool of some kind, chances are the blade will bind and the project will end in failure and bloodshed unless you know exactly how to handle it.

I am considering this or the Dickinson Solid Fuel stove in my Airstream. Does the propane version add condensation like the Buddy Heater? The condensation issue is the reason why I was considering the solid fuel Dickinson plus wood/coal is easy to find. Thanks
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 5 жыл бұрын
The propane version does not add humidity to your interior environment because the combustion chamber is isolated from the inside environment. This also means it does not burn your interior oxygen, which is what you want for the sealed environment of a boat or rv so you don't suffocate when it's running. I leave this heater on 24/7 when it's cold out. How does it work? If you take a look at the exhaust cap it has two "hats stacked on top of each other; the bottom one is the air intake, and the top is the exhaust. The fresh air is brought into the combustion chamber via the 3" flex air intake pipe you can see, and the combustion gasses exit via a 1" flex pipe that runs inside the fresh air intake pipe. When you run the fan you are just pushing interior air into a manifold that is built around the outside of the combustion chamber and heating it up, so there is no moisture being pulled inside, nor is there any carbon dioxide being produced inside the vehicle. It's a good design for a small enclosed environment. Being able to burn coal or wood pellets is convenient, particularly coal because you can buy it just about anywhere and it's easy to store. I've heard the solid fuel version doesn't work very well with wood bits, kindling, and small logs, so I'd double check with someone who has one and find out how effective it is if that's how you plan on feeding it.

How do you think installing two of P12000's would do in a 36ft school bus RV conversion during the winter time in Michigan? Thanks!
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 8 жыл бұрын
+wolfywho It's really a question of insulation and if you find a way to deal with the cold being transmitted from all the windows. 2 P12000s will kick out a lot of heat, and having 2 at opposing ends would probably work well, but you'll be going though propane fast. Don't disclude running a Dickinson in an area where you can enjoy the ambiance in conjunction with something like a Suburban NT16SE on a thermostat to handle the bulk of your heating. The drawback to these units is they use a fair bit of power to run the blower, but you'll need the airflow in such a large unit. With a unit the size of a school bus have you considered a smallish wood stove? You probably have the room for one...

what do you think about the propane regulator and having it set up to go to different areas... did you have to alter that? I currently live in a slide in truck camper and the propane currently only goes to stove- i need to split the line and install a 2 appliance regulator
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 5 жыл бұрын
For my installation I just split the supply line after the existing regulator. On my boat I disconnected the cooktop supply line from the fitting on the cooktop, installed a 3/8" male flare "t" on the end of the line, and ran two lines; a short 3' line back to the cooktop and another 20' line to the heater. Once I had everything hooked up I checked for leaks with soapy water. Twice to be sure. The hardest part by far was threading the 20' line through the bilge area under the floor.

There is not a lot of information on line about this... but does the (exterior) deck cap come with it, or do you have to order that extra. Also... do you need to buy other stuff for the connect too? It seems that I can't find this information readily anywhere.

Thank you so much for this. Do you think a 9000 would be sufficient for a 34 for RV?
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on a lot of factors; how cold it is, how well insulated the RV is, are all the windows double pane. how warm you want it to be etc. Off the top of my head I'd say no. Even the 12000 with the new "improved" plastic fan might be completely insufficient to be honest. 34' is a big RV! My suggestion would be to go with a 12000 and change the new fan out to the old version that Dickinson still uses on their marine Diesel heaters.

Hello, do you know if this would heat up a 33 foot camper in Virginia in the winter and also is there any efficiently ratings on these heaters.
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 8 жыл бұрын
+TIM MARKLE If I remember correctly Virginia doesn't see a whole lot of temperatures cold enough to see snow so I'd think it would be ok. It really depends on insulation and how warm you like things to be. If the caper has single pane windows it'll be tough trying to keep it heated and a single heat source probably won't work. In any case make sure you get the 12000; the 9000 won't be enough as it seems to be anemic compared to the 12000. I pay 0% attention to efficiency ratings to be honest, so I can't answer that.

Can you put the vent line through a wall instead of the roof?
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 7 жыл бұрын
Like straight sideways? No, I don't think that's a good idea. I think it relies on hot air rising to work so a 90 deg bend would hamper the air flow. It would also have the exhaust heating up the exterior wall. I have seen it done on a 45 deg angle on a boat and it seemed to work ok, though I'm not sure I would do that either without asking the manufacturer first.

Unless the camper is huge or it's stupidly cold out, I suspect it would work quite well. Even in a large camper if you swap out the fan to the old style diesel heater fan from Dickinson you'd probably be fine. I have one in my class B RV, and for the past 3 (or 4?) winters I have ran mine for at least 12 hours a day for 5 months of the year. It's running right now as I type this. Cheers!

I'm not an expert by any stretch, but if your propane fireplace is the cause of stains on the walls or windows then that's a very serious and potentially dangerous issue! The exhaust should be directly exiting out the exhaust pipe/chimney and not entering the interior environment....

I don't know for sure but I strongly suspect the pellet stove would be a bit cheaper to run depending on how you buy the pellets: eg. by the bag or by the ton. Honestly I would never use a pellet stove for what I do so my knowledge on them is limited; if I didn't go with propane I'd be using a solid fuel heater which would let me use a variety of fuels including scavenged wood scraps and branches.

does it produce a lot of interior condensation?
@ScaredStupid
@ScaredStupid 7 жыл бұрын
Not at all, the combustion chamber is a sealed unit that uses outside air to burn then releases it back outside so any moisture created by the process isn't dumped into the interior; More importantly, it doesn't burn the oxygen from the living space.

caution, I have had these for years, they do infact pull oxiegen from your inside space area= look at the bottom of the heater you will see holes in the bottom lol,, Also were the stove pipes connect they are not sealed connections and do and will leak carbonmoxide. I have fully tested them. Also the door with glass window will also leak carbonmonoxide as it is not a true sealed door , infact it's very poorly sealed with only a strip of breathable fyberglass rope lol...also gasses can and will escape through the glass window as it's also poorly sealed....these are not full proof and Dockerson company will not ecknowledge or admit nothing of the matters I just explained, iv called them many times over the years, they admit nothing...nor will they address a fix or soluation...there great heaters if you fix the weak areas, use the same size and type fyberglass rope used on the door and just tightly wrap over and over and steel clamp the pipe areas with a few steel pipe clamps and stuff in the window area with with the same rope...use nothing else to seal the leaks or you will have a mess of a nightmirrir to clean and scrape off...good luck
