Strange how people listening to this song always seem to end up smiling. FYI - on assorted greatest of all time lists for guitarists, Dicke Betts is usually always top 10 or close to it. Duane Allman is usually just a few notches above him.

@@thomashealey6941 that coincided with Gregg's ability to write great songs dropping off. But this wasn't a later days thing, he had pretty much shot his wad by 'Eat a Peach.' But then, I can't think of all that many groups who improved, other than maybe as musicians, which tends to only add excess, after their first few albums. Once the schedules, groupies, partying, and record company demands kick in, quality tends to lag. It's hard to maintain a you man's passion without actually being a young man.

I've seen the Allman Brothers several times. This is my favourite tune of theirs. Imagine what they did with this tune live. As Keith Richards says - when you record songs on albums "they are just babies - it's not until you take them on the road and play them live for a while that they really grow up" (or something to that effect) This was always an awesome song live. FYI - Duane Allman does the solo on Layla by Derek and the Dominoes (band with Eric Clapton)

First semester freshman in college 1971 I got to see the Allman Brothers playing the basketball arena at my small state college. I was a kid and knew little about the band but what an amazing concert. It was only weeks later that Duane Allman died. I remember now what a strange feeling that was at the time. Sidenote: my very first concert just a few months earlier in June 1971 was Jethro Tull on the Aqualung tour so I enjoyed your reactions and research into Jethro Tull very much. Thanks Daniel.

It wasn’t so much the technical ability of the guitar playing, so much as the beautiful phrasing that Duane Allman and Dicky Betts did, alone and together. It wasn’t even a jam... almost sounded as if it was all written that way, note for note. (Not sure if it actually was, though.) They just had that kind of amazing chemistry, together! A little information about this album...the Allman Brothers were in the beginning stages of recording “Eat a Peach”- they had laid down the initial parts of the tracks “Blue Sky”, “Stand Back” and Duane Allman’s song “Little Martha”, then they did a few shows before Duane, bass player Berry Oakley, and two of their roadies and checked into a rehab to battle their blooming heroin addictions. It was pretty soon after that, Duane, (who was really enthusiastic and optimistic about the future of the band, and riding the success of the live album “At Fillmore East”) was riding his Harley-Davidson Sportster along a Macon, Georgia road, (supposedly at a very high rate of speed) and came across a flatbed truck carrying a lumber crane, stopped still at an intersection. As he tried to swerve around the truck to avoid hitting it, he clipped part of it and was thrown from his bike, which popped into the air and landed on top of him, and he skidded for many, many feet like this, gravely injuring himself. Sadly, at 24 years old, Duane Allman died in the hospital a few hours later. “Blue Sky” was one of the last songs Duane Allman ever played. Consequently, “At Fillmore East” went up to the top 15 American Album charts. He always said he would “Eat a Peach for Peace”. Rest In Peace, Duane. If you really want a fantastic recommendation for a positive-energy-like GORGEOUS song, my pick would be “Melissa”, off this album. You won’t be sorry...that’s a guarantee!

Sweetie, don't ever "correct" an old man. I had sent them a video of the news coverage that mentions the nearby peach trees. No, I wasn't going to rehash the whole long story in a comment. Please realize you may not have witnessed the entire interaction. And just because you've copied and pasted a Rolling Stone article does not make you an authority on the subject. And I ain't claiming to be one, either. But I certainly know how those of us around at the time consumed that story. Don't try to embarrass people, honey. It's real bad form.

@@bobangell1679 While I’m somewhat flattered that you think my writing sounds as if I “copy and pasted” a Rolling Stone article, you must also understand that I am also a woman who’s been around a while, and it was never my intention to embarrass you. I simply wanted to squash the notion that Duane Allman was “killed by hitting a peach tree” as you had mentioned in your other comment. I, by no means, claim to be an authority on this subject, but because I grew up around that time in Pensacola FL and Atlanta GA, and my father (who worked at the studio where EAP was recorded) and friends were highly affected by his death, I made it my business to find out exactly what had happened on that day in Macon, GA. Many people had said the record was called “Eat a Peach” for the reason you stated, but facts is facts, Bob, and I was simply stating them. I apologize if you took it personally, which wasn’t my intent, whatsoever, as I had written this before I even read your comment. Making assumptions about people, especially strangers who write an informational comment on YT, well, we all know what happens when we assume things. I’m just glad that everyone has had the chance to experience this wonderful record, after all these years...Duane, Dicky, Greg AND my Daddy, are all smiling in Heaven because of it!

Dad enjoy this moment with your son. He's a pretty impressive young man . one of the best times I had professionally was when my two kids, applied for and got jobs where I worked. We were able to interact on a daily basis and they got to see their old man working in interacting with other people on a professional level. At one point my son was assigned to my team. We had a talk and I told him that I would have to be harder on him than everyone else and that would still be complaints of nepotism. He understood. And yes so there were still complaints even though I was much harder on him. We actually made a pretty good team working together.

For the record the only thing I did to help them get their jobs was to tell HR they were submitting their resumes. I also said if you think they are qualified for an interview that is entirely up to you. I am biased so I won't tell you what to do. That's Dickie Betts who had a country bent. The allman brothers were capable coming at you from two or three directions. They had two lead guitars two drummers two keyboardist and the same album would have a Jessica, Blue Skies, then heavy Blues like Whipping Post. Try out Midnight Rider then Ramblin Man. Before Duane was Killed there was a lot of Slide guitar. Duane was credited with the rift in Eric Clapton's Layla.

I blind-bought the "Eat A Peach" 8-track when it came out and that began my long career as an Allman Brothers fan. "Blue Sky" is one of Dickey Betts' songs--that's him singing it and playing lead guitar (Dickey took over as lead guitarist after Duane's death). It leads right into the great Gregg Allman number "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" which you guys might consider also reacting to. Dickey always gave the Allman Brothers most of their country sound, while Gregg was ever the bluesman.

I would play Mountain Jam because I wanted my $.25 worth and this song is 30 some odd minutes,. The bar tenders would catch on during the long drum jam and pull the plug. Duane most frequently played a Les Paul. I love Les pauls but they have a hard edge to them almost a nasal-like quality to the sound. Duane played his Les bi-amped to two fifty watt Marshall amplifiers which gave him a very nice clear mellow tone. In his solo many of the notes almost sound like bells ringing. Really a great sound. If you want to appreciate the raw sound of a Les; Aerosmith is probably the band to check out. They really did justice to the basic sound of the Les Paul.

Moving on in the 1970s, althought we still had Nam and Nixon to deal with, music indeed gravitated (matured) into what you've been covering in your videos with bands like Yes and the Allman Brothers. I got to see them twice. Even better live. A lot of jazz influence.

"One Way Out." Live at the Filmore. The Allman Brothers would always give a class on how a guitar should sound.

You've heard Blue Sky you just didn't know it. It's one of the most covered songs in music. It is also the greatest guitar duet ever recorded.

The song was actually written to/for Dickey's then-wife, whose Native American name was Blue Sky.

What do these guys know? I was riding in the back seat of a buddy's Impala when he popped in an 8-track. In those days we had twin speakers on the ledge behind the seat. Just riding along at night, sipping my Boone's Farm apple wine and grooving out. Being a guitar player, I knew "THIS WAS IT" and it has been for over 30 years!

Favorite song all-time. Dickey Betts shines. They all do, but it’s primarily his composition and his show. Same with Jessica

Duane Allman the first lead, Dickey Betts the second lead, the best guitar duo ever IMHO, and with Berry Oakley's bass, just a cosmic connection.
