Just to be clear, gingernuts are very hard ginger cookies widely available (and enjoyed) in Australia & New Zealand...of course they are much easier to eat if you dunk them in a hot cup of tea. Tim definitely understood that his line about "gingernuts" and "dipping them in tea" would be interpreted as sexual innuendo...thus reinforcing the idea of how prejudice emanates from knee-jerk reactions to stereotypes...

I think they call these cookies (biscuits in Australia,NZ, the UK etc) Ginger Snaps in the US and there's variations of them all around the world - they also call them Ginger Nuts in the UK. I think the name Ginger Nut was a gift for Tim Minchin.

Great song, my second favourite by Tim Minchin. 'Storm' is still my number one though. He introduces it as a nine minute beat poem, and it is. Don't let that fact pull you off, it's an absolutely amazing and funny piece of art.

I don't think his intention is to ever offend but to point out hypocrisies. By using the ginger anagram he is cleverly discussing a topic that he otherwise couldn't. Oh btw just for non Aussies(and non Brits and any non anyother countries that have ginger nuts), a ginger nut is a very hard biscuit often dunked into a hot drink to soften them up. For amazing piano Darkside awesome version, for nice song White Wine in the Sun and for complicated words The Pope Song!

The song in which he used that word was a long time ago and it was in context meant to make it clear that it was unacceptable. He did remove it ultimately realizing it offended people regardless of the opposite intention. This on the other hand, was a parody of Chris Rock's famous sketch .

Daniel, Tim did a collab of this song in which he explained why he used the word "tampon" ... it was live with Ed Sheeran and Tim said he wrote it in hopes of getting Ed to say the word.. If you get a chance you may want to check out Tim's song to his wife "If I Didn't Have You", it's a truly well-written and amazing song. Make sure you check out the full version it has his take on life right after the song.

‘Response’ isn’t really the best word to describe the song. You’re right that that ‘back story’ made it seem as though the song could be mocking the criticism Tim received from that previous song, though I assure you this is not the case. Rather this song was just written after he received criticism and after he had already decided to change the lyrics in the other song. It should be seen as Tim affirming what he had learnt from his experience with the other song and the humour comes from the fact that these two different ‘prejudices’ (sorry trying not to spoil the song) are not comparable, as you said. I thought you made some really astute comments in your analysis (sorry if that sounds patronising- I don’t mean it to be) and hope that this small bit of context is of interest. :)

Tim's album "Apart Together" is not a comedy album but a more serious effort and I absolutely love it. The song "Airport Piano" (which lyrically is 100% comedy) comes off as quite simple but if you can remove his lyrics and focus on the instrumentation, it is actually quite incredible. My favorite is the title track "Apart Together" and the last track "Carry You" gets more powerful with every listen. Tim's comedic songs will always have their place, but my favorites were the others like "Not Perfect" and "White Wine in the Sun". "Apart Together" is more in that vein and I highly recommend it ☺

Just wanted to clear up that he didn't write the song to 'attack' the backlash, but it was more of a realization after the backlash that he realized he didn't really have a right to use the word. And he wanted to get that point to others but was searching for a way to do so but knowing he didn't really have any right to directly address it. This song is his way to address his learning that the word isn't for him or anyone else who hasn't had to endure it, using his own history of dealing with very minor prejudice against him, it was fortuitous and brilliant that the two words had the same letters in them. He explains this in the documentary that he realized he was in the wrong and wanted to correct the error.

Tim has spoken fairly openly about his use of the n word in one of his songs and there are some more nuanced explanations online if you have a look. Basically he reacted defensively initially when he received backlash and tried to justify why he used that word. But quickly realised he was wrong and stopped performing the song. He seems to be saying he wrote Prejudice more as an apology and to explain that he understands it was wrong, rather than to mock the people who were criticising him. At least that’s my understanding.

Ginger abuse is real Daniel. I was the only one with red hair in school and it was flaming red. I was made to feel ugly, ugly, ugly. For years. The torment was daily and I hated my hair and myself. Any other redheads in the comments will tell you the same. Tim is also a ginger himself; he speaks the truth. The bait and switch at the beginning is always amusing, watching the uninitiated spell out the letters in their head! 😅

If it helps, 2010 was a majorly different time, and the popular humor was very shock-factor based (as a reaction to the super uptight and censoring era of the 90s). Also the collective discourse was still feeling out if/when it was appropriate to use certain words (like Morgan Freeman famously insisted on actually using the word when discussing it, rather than skirting around it by saying “n-word” like some kind of pearl-clutching square getting upset about swearing or something. We have since compromised with the phrasing “n-slur” so as to acknowledge the severity of the word without actually using it, but I digress). All that to say, the fact that Tim Minchin actually chose to rewrite his lyrics at that time would have been highly progressive, and shows that he did care and listened to the critique.

I almost abandoned him when I heard the origin story behind this song. Total sidebar: THAT word and Ginger having the same letters was a lightning bolt! But I like to think this is his homage (from a 1% understanding of the space surrounding the other word) to the understanding that it sucks to be othered regardless of reason (skin color, hair color, whatever) and helps to create a space from which we can begin a very necessary growth process. Think it sucks growing up teased for your hair color? Welcome to the *gateway* to understanding marginalization. Just a thought ;-)

In places that are not the United States, the 'n' word has a history and associations that are not necessarily to do with either slavery or hip hop... Indeed there is the odd river and country that are named from the same roots. I live in Aotearoa/New Zealand and didn't much like the use last century of the 'f' word - that's not a problem now, instead the so called home of freedom of speech has all but outlawed the 'n' word; fine. I can do that, with courtesy if not grace. (Side issue - damned if I'm gonna do the same with the 'c' word!) What I really like about Tim's build up, is the way in which our own prejudices lead us up the wrong path - and yeah, ginger is not by any means equivalent to the great unspoken, but actually the song itself is as much about both words, and/or any prejudices. Relax, enjoy

It's not just a joke to Tim. It's a way of tackling a sensitive topic without offending. As long as you see Tim as a comedian, you won't get it. Tim is a messenger who uses comedy and insanely talented musical skills to make people think. Do you think the Pope song was done for comedy value, or about expressing dismay about a church, who's leader was more concerned about covering up pedophilia than addressing the problem, I know my answer!

If you'd like to explore another brilliant musical artist that specializes in satirical social commentary I'd recommend Randy Newman. His album "Sail Away" is hard to beat. Particularly the title track "Sail Away," "Political Science," and "God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind.) They're all pretty short so you could string multiples into one reaction.

Personally, from what I have heard, Tim didn’t understand the impact of this word. It’s not quite the same or I should say it wasn’t quite the same in Australia as it was in some other places. This isn’t mocking the word, it’s his response once he understood the impact the word had. I don’t think he has ever used that word again and everything I see he is a very compassionate and understanding man unless you use religion to harm people of course.

You’ve misinterpreted the back story and the response to it- Tim is a deep thinker, a philosopher almost- and to suggest for a second you think he’s comparing the two words or mocking the backlash is the biggest misjudgment of his character you could have. This song is so misunderstood by reactors every time. I’d suggest researching more into this via the suggested documentary. Other than that I thought your reaction was great. But never fall into the trap of thinking he’s somehow out to mock or make fun - especially on a topic that is so deeply important to his moral character.
