As a longtime major Avril Lavigne stan, I was in kindergarten when Let Go came out that year and it was my first album I ever owned by choice. I still believe that Avril was integral to the songwriting process - even if she might not have been the nucleus of it. With an industry songwriter and producer team like the Matrix, especially back in those days, your primary goal was to find underdeveloped artists that would most convincingly and authentically perform the songs/demos you‘ve created from both an artistic and a commercial standpoint. With that being said, Avril may not have been the “head b in charge” during the creation of the Let Go singles, but she was inarguably present and involved in the creative process no matter how you look at it. The Matrix, who I have always had the utmost respect for as a brilliant production team, would’ve never soared to the heights they did if it wasn’t for Let Go and their collaborations with Avril herself during the making of that album. Avril has always been writing her songs, either by herself or with co-writers, since the beginning of her career and so to argue that she was just some lame industry plant poser to me is a bit of a strawman fallacy. Even though she was technically an “industry plant”, NO DIFFERENTLY from her contemporaries, that doesn’t negate that she was a talented writer that was in fact heavily involved in the process of Let Go, as well as the several “B-sides” that were also recorded for it. The way I see it, is Avril helped the Matrix just as much as the Matrix helped Avril. It’s a shame they never continued working together for whatever reasons, because I’m sure that also would’ve been a great project. It takes a VILLAGE to create a global pop star. Avril Lavigne was just as much of a part of that village as every other writer and producer she worked with.

Her earlier work (her first and her second album) was really more adult stuff.

She was popular, but also not viewed as a serious singer.
@LD-tn6ff2 ай бұрын
Girl, forget Avril, those new artists are more successful on Spotify and KZbin today than history's most successful commercial artists of all time. This is because exposure and consumption amongst the masses has absolutely nothing to do with talent, legacy, or quality of art itself. Theres a reason the music industry has what's called "kingmakers". If record labels/music executives today are going to invest hundreds of thousands on a new artist today like Billy or Olivia, they're going to ensure that those artists and their music are exposed, branded, and marketed to consumers with utmost priority over an artist who isn't yielding a return on investment for them- including legacy acts. This just shows that when consumers don't scour the majority of the market - learning about hundreds upon hundreds of new or old artists for a stake in preference as a consumer, that an industry can step in to manipulate what few artists DO get exposure.

So, it APPEARS that today's artists are more successful. Looks can be deceiving
@delix7872 ай бұрын

The Let Go CD booklet had all the lyrics written in supposedly Avril's own hand! 😂 They really tried to sell the idea that Avril’s music was “real” and selfwritten (and that she wrote songs with her bandmates) as opposed to her competitors. Now we know that autorship is questionable and that she never quite managed to have the same success. A few years later Taylor Swift came up and was also marketed as a songwriter. The difference being that Taylor actually wrote her own stuff and so her voice remained constant troughout her career even when using different collaborators. And she also had booklets with handwritten lyrics (in her case, real ones!)
