Her songs are totally not pop, they are popular but the sonority is the same as rock bands from her years. If her songs were sung by a band with a male vocalist they wouldn't be considered pop, but since she is a solo woman everyone just assumed she was a pop singer. She transitioned to full pop on her fourth album, but her first three album were inspired by the artists she liked like simple plan, alanis morissette and blink 182.

@@spheksophobiaurinal Can confirm as I heard songs like "Girlfriend" and "What The Hell" and thought she was one of those Maroon 5 kind of "Rock" acts. (As in not actually rock in the slightest) It also didn't help that she never recieved airplay on Mainstream/Active/Heritage/Alt Rock stations, But I blame that moreso on Complicated releasing at a time where that style of rock was relegated to the Pop/Adult Contemporary stations. The same thing happened to Matchbox 20, Lifehouse, Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis Morissette, ect. so it wasn't just her that got screwed over. In that scenerio it might've been a better idea to release "Losing Grip" as the 1st single so that people knew what she was about from the get go. But because they didn't the media molded her image into something that it wasn't and it absolutely did damage to her career that could've otherwise been on par with the likes of Linkin Park. Under My Skin was still a massive success but it could've been boosted even more if it had additional help from rock radio, Who were responsible for giving acts like Nickelback, Creed, Puddle Of Mudd, Staind, ect major pop hits at the time. I mean, It doesn't really matter now since Avril's music speaks for itself, And I'd argue that Goodbye Lullaby is still a rock album, Just more of an acoustic one. The self titled however is straight pop for the most part. Only rock adjacent songs on that album are "Rock N Roll" and "Bad Girl".

Her second album, Sound Soldier, came out in 2007. 2007 was that weird wonky time when nearly every artist was trying to use urban or electronic elements to spice up their respective genres. the album was mainly produced by The Matrix(surprise surprise) but none of the songs were promoted on a wide scale due to the album only being released in Canada and Japan. Since her time as a solo artist seemingly fizzled out, she’s been the front woman of a punk metal indie band, Sumo Cyco since 2011 officially(their formation seemed to come from recording sessions skye was doing in 2009)

She wasn't just a sex symbol. She'd also been through a terrible marriage, broke free from a conservatorship with her father, and struggled with bipolar disorder. If anything, she should be praised, for her strength. As for Ashlee Simpson, that night on SNL, which she had blamed on her band playing the wrong song, turned out that she had acid reflux, and couldn't perform. Avril was the first and the only pop-punk-rock girl whose discography I used to listen for many years. But 5 or 6 years ago I stumbled upon Ashlee's "Shadow" music video on youtube that made me check her music out. And now I can say: ASHLEE ALL THE WAY. I don't care what anyone thinks. She totally outdid Avril on her "Autobiography" album. All that rasp and anger in her voice along with soft breathy vocals on that album (makes Avril's music sound like average pop songs from angry teen who doesn't have any texture in her voice) P.S. I would also recommend people to check Lindsay's Wango Tango 2005 live clips. She's got a great stage presence. Love her voice and the songs as well. It's funny how Avril easily became the most boring of these three to me (in terms of pop-rock music and live performances). I love a lot of Hilary's songs but her voice is too weak for them. And she lip syncs most of the time. That's why I can't rank her higher than Avril.
@PuddleOfPizza2 ай бұрын
Thing is Avril's first two albums are heavily drenched in Post-Grunge, So that "Lack of Texture" in the vocals is just kind of the genres style. Idk why she gets categorized as Pop-Punk/Pop-Rock cause her music sonically was closer to Nickelback, Puddle Of Mudd, Staind, Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, 3 Doors Down, ect. And most of those bands aren't known for "Texture". I don't really care cause it works for what she's going for, And I tend to prefer that sound anyway.

I love Ashlee music too but Ashlee kinda torpedoed her own career after that SNL lip sync fiasco.

Are you kidding me? Avril is way better and more iconic than both of those!
@x4tash2 ай бұрын
@@chrishill9197 She's a better vocalist in general and got better music career overall but she's boring compared to these two. In most of her live performances she basically just stands on the same spot with a grumpy face (mostly during her debut era) or slowly walking around the stage. For instance, "Girlfriend" is a song where you can go completely crazy on stage. Yet, all of the performances lack energy. Just watch that Lindsay Lohan's Kiss FM Wango Tango performance that I mentioned in my comment. She lip-synced there (or maybe sang along with the studio vocas) but the energy is mind blowing
@chrishill9197Ай бұрын
@@x4tash Lindsay Lohan is overrated and Ashlee Simpson is completely irrelevant. The fact that Avril can sing better automatically makes them better than these two rip-offs. Avril is anything but boring, I wish I could find some live perfomances of hers to prove you wrong. Not to mention as people they are both worse than Avril.

Avril Lavigne is amazing! I have always loved Lindsay Lohan’s 2 albums as well though, clearly influenced by early Avril’s sound 🤘🏼

Fefe dobson was so good too. Love Avril, Britney, Hilary, Lindsey, Kelly, and Miley. Paramore came out and was so refreshing and edgy. Love it.

I don't get this sudden obsession with Avril Lavigne. Back in the day she was seen almost exclusively as another pop starlet: a poseur, in other words.

Only because she was a woman, if she was a dude in a band singing the same lyrics nobody would call her poser

@@spheksophobiaurinal Yes, it's actually quite misogynistic how female celebrities get more harsh criticism and scrutiny than male celebrities.

@@spheksophobiaurinal Yes. It's because she's a woman. /s Y'all know that ain't the reason. Don't play dumb. Back in the day, I didn't hear many of the same _accuations_ (ie. of merely being a poseur) from the media (ie. teen, musical, alternative, etc printed and tv media) directed at other alt *FEMALE* singers. Personally, I don't remember hearing much (if any) about the likes of Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), the band Lillix, Nita Strauss, and even with Taylor Momsem. If any, Momsem leaving _Gossip Girl_ to become full time frontwoman of a rock band.

I wouldn't characterize Britney and Avril as opposites, they're both attractive blondes who appealed both to women and men alike and made the charts. Both their music fit well into the inseparable optimism and anxieties of the 2000s, with the music video of Avril's "When You're Gone" touching on themes relevant to the US war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Avril was my gateway to liking Linkin Park and then more rock, nu-metal and 00's "punk" music. It widened my tastes in ways I'm very glad for. I was so cringe trying to copy her early 'punk' style though, with the baggy pants and the ties 😂because I did it SO poorly. I didn't find baggy pants that fit me well, and the ones I settled on were HIGH WAISTED on me. It was bad. I wish I had pictures I could show people so they'll stop trying to reassure me. I just wanna laugh at it together!
