Did Blizzard just announce the release of "Ascension 0.5" with Season of Discovery?

Mcdoubles back again with a brand new video and today we're going to talk about Blizzard's 2023 Blizzcon announcement of their "Season of Discovery" which looks EERILY similar to something we've been playing on this channel for years now: Project Ascension.

That is pretty funny that there was much stealing going on although the argument could be made why do you have to continually pay sub fees to a game you've already spent thousands on? I think in the future there will be legislation to prevent wow type scenarios because you never really own the game. Too bad our geriatrics in congress have no clue what laws to pass.

i think another huge reason for the progressive level cap is so that players don’t rush through the content. Most players now just reflexively try to level as fast as possible to get to endgame, and I think Blizzard understands this, so instead of trying to force players to level slower, they’re instead making that prerequisite bar of max level lower, so now you feel free to explore level 25 zones without any time pressure, level 35 zones later, etc. Without this, most players would probably rush through the content, and I think they really want to have everyone experience the “discovery.”

Most important of all; its a lot easier to convince my friends to level 25 levels for a 10-man raid with new fun spells in classic than it is to have them join the monumental challenge that is Ascension. I've played ascension on and off since season 3. Im glad this is simplified.

how is ascension a challenge? I only played on there for 1 week and had everything done and lvled about 30 times, rerolled and lvled back to 60 until it got too boring. Ascension is easy af. How simple do you need it? LLAL

Back in the earlier seasons the leveling was way slower been playing Ascension since there was a seperate realm for high risk called Sargeras so season 1? Or pre-season 1. Also played in the closed beta but back then it was shit.

When I first played ascension before classic came out it completely changed all my desire from WoW and the experience had never been the same. This is INSANE. The team over at Ascension are very talented and dedicated, without them classic plus wouldn't be possible as it is today. I hope they have some communication maybe to construct new character archetype because what they showed at Blizzcon while is fun, some of the reemerging abilities leave something to be desired. (Looking at you Shaman: StormStrike, Dual Wield,Overload,Lava Lash/Burst BUT 0 Frost build potential. If this were a final product it would feel too sameish)

Its project ascension adjacent for sure, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I have a feeling season of discovery is going to be far more balanced than project ascension and lets be honest here Blizzard has always been at their best when taking other peoples ideas and making them better. Its kinda how they made their name.

If Ascension's only purpose was to spark Blizzard into making true Classic+ content I'm cool with that. Psevers just lit the fire and put numbers in the proof that people want this kind of content. Blizzard yoinking and twisting that design philosophy is exactly what I wanted them to do. On official blizzard servers it will be wildly more popular too, potentially drawing the main blizzard crowd over to try other pservers. Hopefully we just get a cycle of pservers and blizzard developing cool new content, the more competition the better for the players ultimately. We're only going to end up with a better end product by having them duke it out.

It's nothing like ascension people like c'mon... ascension is classless and very ability mixed. In SoD there is illusion of choice but a) it's class specific only; b) there's nothing random about it; c) in reality, there's only an illusion of choice - each spec has 1 ability per slot, from what they've shown. Nothing alike.

I don't see how really, my prediction is the meta is quickly going to turn in a 5 casters (lock tank, lock/sham dps, 3 mages (healing/frost). The idea of chronomancer is cool but you can't have a premium healing class being able to also be top dps. Some of the classes are going to be utter broken in pvp with good gear - Demo lock with heal runes, resto druids with tank runes for flag running, arms warriors with all the damage buffs (around 50% more dmg for windows) then having windfury with them will just delete multiple people in a single sweeping strikes, hunters with lone wolf + sniper training with 1 shot caster and leather wearers.

Seasonal stuff for classic like this is awesome, like trying something completely new yet vanilla like with a litte sprinkle on it. I am very excited to try this stuff out. And if its very successful or some of it, we will certainly get closer to a classic+ realm.

Honestly I can see them making raids later that are not there. Like the green portal in old SW. Or the Nax raid in Stratholm. I think they can do a spin off on that one to make it a fast boss challenge raid. Like a race to clear kind of thing. I think there are a lot of possibilities they might open up as we get locked by level.

I had a very telling conversation the other day. It was on a video where this drama was memed. I replied to one person who said he would play the blizzard servers if they were as good as the private counter part. When I asked why, he just said "well because". There is a reason people call the blizzard fans - Drones. Ultimately, this season doesn't even need to be as good as ascension. I found it VERY coincidental that ontop of the extreme ascension vibes the location of the open world pvp is where you first drop off in fel forged mode. I might just be not as excited as other's cause in a way its the "been there and done that" feeling but would be fun to have that experience with my friends who werent into the private server scene

I think the upside of blizzard's take on the enchanting system is that it can be done anywhere anytime out of combat. So if you get a new pair of gloves you can immediately reapply your existing enchant to it. In it's most simplest form, it's almost like a retail talent system. I've played ascension a lot and I suspect this project going forward will outperform ascension for the sole-reason of having blizzard funds backing them. I do plan on resubbing to try SoD and later on probably war within, Metzen is such a good hype beast he makes me want to give blizzard money again ffs

The aoe hand of gul dan, mid-range instant shadow-bolt, imp spawns, damage absorbtion, mobility, auras. Small wings so you can still see your character instead of all warlock tanks looking the same.

its rather hard to balance it all I'd guess, but considering private servers have done so its rather odd they chose not to touch it. Altough excited about the runes system, they shoved everything in there to just forget the talents, some abilities are really complex and could be matched with talents to do some effects, right now they're packed af. Though at least every type of spec can use them liberally so who knows. But talents should had gotten some touch up, guess they might in the future and just want to go really really slow about it to not upset people.

Yep, leveling in the open world now in ascension is completely fucking dead. Back in season 2-3 when I leveled with my friends in HR we always found other people to fight in every zone. aura completely killed open world leveling. And then max level PvP is a fucking mess thanks to the pvp dev who is literally nerfing builds that beat him and throwing fits in their "private" pvp discord lmao

level 60 endgame wont be a thing for atleast a year or two because of the level bands, dont expect to get to 60 anytime soon, first band is capped at 25 if you was paying attention

Its a one year seasonal server like season of mastery was. They will 100% shut it down after a year. High chance that they come back with something new. I would also be interested in the 60 stuff. Will we go into the "old" raids? Will they buff the old raids as in SoM? My guess is they will create something completely new for this season but lets see

Blizz can start with fixing the vertical melee bug, swinging through walls and ceilings 50 yards upward, and they can reintroduce the resistance check for magical spells in PVP. That would be a unique approach.

I have played basically every popular private server since Nostalrius and what really excites me these days are servers like Turtle, Epoch, Duskhaven, and CoA that actually want to push classic+ with balanced classes, reworks, and world redesigns. Ascension always struck me as way too random and gimmicky

I wasn't expecting much from classic+ but honestly im actually really excited for this. It seems like its gona be a lot of fun. I immediately thought of ascension when i was watching metagoblins video yesterday. I think this is going to take a toll on the private server population though which is kinda sad. Duskhaven is going to struggle due to this and duskhaven was my favorite server but idk if I'll actually play duskhaven reforfed because of this.

When you face somebody in ascension PVP, unless you have fought them before, you will have no idea what skills they use. I think its going to be interesting for blizzard to figure that out.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong but it just looks like you have to go find abilities that you would normally just get from your class trainer or put a point into in your talent tree

Most of these abilities were not available to the classes in Vanilla. Ex. Ret pallies getting crusader strike and divine storm, that was not a thing in Vanilia. So these were not trainable abilities.

I only have 6mo in WoW, ever... I have been saying that I WISH mages could heal. I'd totally offspec healing. It would make sense if we could. It could be water themed and it could be a great fill to switch it up. There are other games where mages can heal or heal others. I think it's a great idea and was very happy to see that. It's like they read my mind. A bunch of people in my guild were laughing because of how something I jokingly wish was in the game and how it would be cool, actually is going to happen. :D

if they do ascension 2.0 i'm paying subscription tbh. Also, everyone expected twow alike thing, but i think they can do both at same time. They can release an ascension kind of game and a twow kind of game in another client or idk.

I love Ascension so much, but I live in America and my ping is like 160 so PvP is so rough. Like charge doesn't ever let me attack the person im charging. So retail with the same mechanics is perfect. I've also spent like 300 bucks on ascension lol I can save money.

At this point I'm just waiting for AI. Input a bunch of prompts and I can have AI write a WoW/Ascension style game that fits what I enjoy.

Personally I think alot of people will be dissatisfied with these changes, but its a step in the right direction

My one issue with all of this is that classic is about the world, the leveling and precarious balance of trying to gear a character while struggling in the world. Most of these abilities straight up overpower many of the classes, especially for early leveling. Example - giving warriors 3 rage per bleed and a self heal after every mob they kill, that fundamentally changes the challenge of leveling a warrior. Also based on what I seen Arcane mages are going to be completely OP for dungeons, any group can simply just take a tank, ele sham and 3 mages. If they do not lower the damage then the healing will scale out of control and eliminate the need for any other healers. Also I don't know how they are going to have any form of pvp balance at all - Shadow priests dotting 3 people per swp, locks getting double the healing power on drain stackings, paladins with an interrupt, druids taking 20% less dmg in bear and a charging interrupt, etc.

Season of "discovery" is a season meant to discover what they can actually do in a experimental way, we have to keep a open mind and be not necessarily positive, but at least be objective in our opinion, because if we bash this. Then the investors will say "Nah, the players do not want us to do this type of things, it do not earn us money." If we pay for a sub, and check the game out then we are atleast showing the investors that we are willing to pay for their product IF they start to Explore/Discover more of what they can give us. But we have to be open minded and willing to check it out, give it good PR so that they will green lit more projects like this.

I've just seen a lot of comments recently saying Blizzard is copying Ascension. I feel that's a little bit dumb imo. I'm pretty sure lots of developers from blizzard would've though of something like this even if Ascension wasn't a thing. It's literally just a new form of enchanting that you do on your armor, but instead of stats/effects you get spells / ability changes. Who knows if they actually looked at Ascension and built their idea from that? And to call it copying is a bit weird, surely other games have done something similar which Ascension took ideas and got inspiration from. I'd argue it's almost impossible to not copy even when you aren't trying to, most things have been done before; you just gotta change it up a tiny bit and then that's completely okay. I'm excited as hell for this. It's opening up so many possibilities of things/changes which people thought would never happen. (outside the private server scene at least) I have no doubt they're going to be listening more to people now, especially the more known people in the WoW community like streamers. This is the start of something great.
