Did Canon Lie?! Did the R5's Overheating drama need to happen???

I do think that Canon pulled a creepy move on us, as Canon is the master at crippling their stuff to make a profit. It is amazing they can still survive with this approach. Their competition must not be eating enough of Canon’s lunch.

Love my R5. It’s such a damn good camera. Never left me in no circumstances. Now with the 1.6 firmware it’s a beast of a hybrid camera.

R5 is one of the best selling cameras. Despite the high price tag, and over heating... Cameras get hot, memory cards get hot. That's why pro cameras are big with heatsinks and have fins and fans.

It's been my theory that Canon didn't lie, but were very cautious in setting the R5's heat tolerance. If heat from high-intensity video shooting actually damaged the camera, it would have been disastrous for the company. I agree with your second theory: that rigorous testing showed the R5 could tolerate heat better than Canon thought. With no physical modifications to the body, all a firmware update would do is reprogram the tolerance for shutdown. I've seen testers show that the camera still gets physically hot, and the CFE cards can get almost too hot to touch; but no actual damage occurs to the camera or the captured images. As for the recording limit: it doesn't affect me, but it's ridiculous to remove it in the R7 and R10 but keep it in their expensive prosumer body. C'mon, Canon!

I don’t think they lied at all, Canon have always been super cautious with the cameras they put out. The released the R5 and stated from the start the camera would overheat in certain circumstances, I just think they didn’t expect the initial backlash with overheating. They have continually updated and improved the R5, People need to be careful what they wish for as Canon didn’t have to release this firmware to the R5 they could have easily rebranded this update as a new R5 mark ii and sold more cameras. And the R5c is not just a R5 with a fan it is a totally different camera modelled from the body of the R5 with cinema features. Both of these cameras have there individual strengths and weaknesses

I agree with your and I feel that it is just spoiled whiners suffering from paranoia. Thank you Canon for an amazingly great firmware upgrade!! Now about getting that 29:59 timer removed, when might that happen???

Because (it appears) Canon put timer(s) in the beginning, Canon didn't really know the break point of the camera. Then after awhile (with testing; guess) it didn't melt so they let the timer go a bit further ( timer & thermal measure: because the battery door trick ) ... after 2 years a lot of R5's are sitting on the shelf and Nikon rumored to come out with the R5 competition the Z8....Canon said .. F*kk It!! let it melt and removed the timer/thermal limit & did some algorithm to help reduce the Processor data load .. more efficient processing. Just my stupid opinion. Canon is just like my first girl friend...teased the hell out of me for 2 years before she let me at some of that candy.

Canon was being conservative with good engineering practices to ensure long product lifetimes. They like had no accurate data on performance degrades at the extremes of temperature. Sure they planned an R5 C which is quite different in how it is capable of interfacing to the video world both in connectors and it menus. It much awkward in changing back forth be between video and stills than the R5 is. However, the R5C is more compatible with Canon's cinema line of cameras. Two products for two markets. The R5 is weather sealed. I would not buy it if it weren't. R5C is big heave and clunky. The R5 is not. They more just a fan. Sure you can push the R5 to last longer before overheating. The high mode without doubt shortens the product lifetime. Every engineer worth their salt knows that. I think it two year to find out how the high mode affected product lifetime. It takes time to do that testing and the market should be grateful they supplied it without cost up grading to and R5 Mk II. Frankly you are appear me to be a clickbait guy fomenting dissention where you should be applauding them for doing the work without extra charges involved. The timing is suspicious you there for they guilty? I thought more of you than that.

​@@magnus547 You have over time shared a lot of good information and did work on the R5 about how to live with the earlier versions. You kept your R5 because it was value to while working on improved techniques. You deserve plenty of positive recognition for this. I was a happy camper and kept my R5 but I am a mostly stills shooter. The A7SIII is of zero use to me and many others. I could always use the lesser video 4K and 2K without a problem if I require hour long shoots. I doubt wedding photographs will be shooting in 8K very much since increases the labor time in pose. Of course they are a business and will not shoot themselves in their foot. Keep up the good work.

Do you think they will remove the record limitation on R5 in the future firmware ? Really struck with this annoying for years and they seem to not care about it.

I actually don't think they will remove it. It's an obvious fix that they know they need to do, since they have already removed it in modern cameras. They will leave it there to maintain the R5C advantage is what I think. Who knows? But I don't it'll be removed. I honestly believe they're done with firmware updates for this camera, aside from glitches.

@@magnus547 Urgh that suck! It’s so annoying to get silly limitation. And this camera is not that cheap to stick this marketing strategy on it at all. If They can make a great camera then should giving the real ability of the camera to their customer. They just don’t care. Brand loyalty should not be deserved.
