I told y’all back in 2021 I wasn’t a fan of the Honey browser extension - and now, it’s back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. 🚨 Allegations are flying that Honey is scamming content creators by hijacking affiliate commissions and not actually finding the best deals for shoppers. In this video, I break down what Honey does, what it’s accused of, and whether you should uninstall it.

I don't think I've ever seen a Honey sponsored segment from any KZbinrs I watch, and they certainly never came to me to sponsor videos, but I did have the extension installed. It got me coupon codes maybe twice but I don't shop in my browser very much.

when things are too good to be true....they are. I never use extensions. I watched a security show about 10 years ago they said- Extensions Knits itself into your browser It sees all the traffic your generating before it gets encrypted and it sees all the stuff that comes back into your browser after it is decrypted. Anything like HTTPS or TLS encryption is irrelevant to the extension It's inside your browser and it kinda has equivalent power to your browser Be Very very conservative about the stuff you plug into your browser to give extra functionality

I got rid of Honey before all of this came to light. It was actually a silly reason. After installing, it places a tab in your browser on the right hand side. You cursor over it and it expands. Got got too annoying and I could not figure out how to disable it. So, I just installed it and went with a different discount code extension.

Honey's coupons were misses more than hits for me so I uninstalled it from both my PCs the day those headlines started breaking out. I'm bummed too because I do always make sure to click an affiliate link when there's an option and I got to wonder how many of those purchases actually made it through (I didn't always click the honey tab)

I always avoid these by only installing extensions made by the EFF.

Myself I always go through the coffee for the extension. If an extension has obfuscated the code in it then i don't bother installing it. Any calls to external URIs not related to three extension developer, that pass data retrieved from my system. Nope! Etc.

best way to use an extension like honey imo is to leave it in inactive/always ask for permission mode then you can activate it on a site you don't currently have a code for and then remember to re-deactivate it so it can't keep tracking everything.

I never installed Honey, so it didn't affect me directly. But I did cancel my PayPal account over the issue, giving Honey as the reason for cancellation. If they think what their subsidiary was doing to customers was okay, I don't want to do business with them at all.

I knew installing Honey my privacy was being sold in exchange. Honey gave me good deals in the past and even some cash back on things I buy but it's getting less and less now. I don't ever use affiliate links because I mostly shop for stuff that has nothing to do with KZbin videos. If I want to support a YT creator I use their patreon link or send some money directly their way. The only thing now that makes Honey worth keeping is they will tell me of a price drop on an item I have on my "save for later" Amazon list. I still score some really good deals that way.

Amazon will tell you when a price drops on your Saved for later list, you don't need any extension for that.
