@@CutterflyArts I not recommend go for freelancing since the beginning because freelance need some social networking. I would recommend work on a small studio because small studio can improve way faster than a bigger studio. After a couple years, you can decide on what you gonna do next like continue in studio's work or freelance or even both.
@charliehomenaje85139 ай бұрын
@@CutterflyArts it depends of the type of art you are looking targeting in my case I started in DeviantArt ,and I used to follow other artist and study the type of art they sell through that platform , I used to compare their current lv with mine and based on that I start to price my work. Of course having and audience make things more easier , I may say my works are not industry level because what I take is regular DeviantArt comissions.

Interesting video. There were certain things I predicted about Marc's plan when I saw it where I thought, "no, that is too vague - there are more specific things you could study". For example, if you go read Nicolaides - and Nicolaides isn't perfect but I often refer to him as the counterbalance to today's Art Influencer Meta - he has you do contour and gesture all throughout his course. But he doesn't do only gesture because gesture is an interpretative method, it needs some technical foundation; he uses contour to emphasize specific detail and asks the student to do very slow, intensive contour studies. Nicolaides also does not abruptly switch to drawing from imagination: that is built up from a series of exercises that ask you first to modify what you see - to mirror it, then to draw it turned 90 degrees, to recall a pose you saw a minute ago, and then to do daily compositions where you recall something you saw in the last week. From reviewing different takes on the topic over years, I've worked out that you can break down gestures to contour, cross-contour, centerlines, and spans(straight lines that bounce through the interior of the shape to discover the area) and practice each of those individually to get a more robust foundation, then do gesture as a game you play using each of those lines as "tools". That's an approach that I think covers the majority of beginner-drawing issues. For studying cross-contour I often use 3D models since that allows you to see wireframes and draw them as in regular contour, which builds a lot of intuition for form. The way I addressed anatomy was simply to spend a summer grinding every page in Morpho. That ensured that I got exposed to everything, and what I really learned is that you will get 80% of what you need for figure from studying shoulders and hips - both bones and muscles - because it's the tiny connections made in those areas that will make the pose as a whole make sense. Likewise, texture is covered well in Alphonso Dunn's Pen & Ink Drawing book - he has a workbook that's good for practicing that and other ink skills. Regarding the backgrounds, this is quickly cured by something I discovered just recently, which is to do studies with a perspective grid sketchbook, or the digital equivalent of making a lot of template perspective grids. The goal is to draw scenes from life or reference, but to draw them within the perspective of the grid, not the perspective that you see. That forces you to do lots and lots of perspective manipulation, which gets you used to backgrounds and also makes it easier to bring it out as an effect for foreshortening or dynamic poses. On that note, Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Figure Drawing" is still the best reference for every dynamic pose trick. Finally, for the character design challenge, look up Joe Kubert's correspondence course videos here on KZbin, watch them all, with an emphasis on doing the things you see Joe doing and following along. He is an old-school comics master, he ran a school for decades, so as far as I know, there's no more authoritative source available online on how you go about designing imaginative visuals for stories. I've brought some of these ideas into Marc's channel but he deletes them or reports them as spam, so I stopped.

Thank you for taking the time to input that. Would you mind answering a question? I'd like to ask, when you say you grinded through every page in Morpho, do you mean the complete series or just certain books? I'm almost done drawing through the entirety of Simplified Forms (book 2), and feel like I've been getting a lot out of it. Did you get the same returns when studying his other books, if you did? Or if you only did one book, which was it?
@JH-pe3ro9 ай бұрын
@@AEInYOU I used the "original" Anatomy For Artists Morpho book, which is bigger than the others. My understanding is that the series of smaller books will reuse material from the larger one, so you don't need them all.

Not my place to say if you are employable or not. However, this does give me hopes for my own art. I have had the program for about 3 years, just sitting on my hard drive. I started it like a month ago, but I quickly decided to study perspective first since everything I do seems to be lacking it. I am going through "Perspective made easy, How to draw, and How to render books" before I get to the program once more. I don't think I will be where you are in one year. It will probably be 2-4 years since I don't have as great of a drive as you do. Art is just my hobby and therapy. If I get paid for it, it will become something else, and it will be damaging to my mental health. Great work, and I loved the finish piece.

@@CutterflyArts of course, the way your little guy has a paintbrush in his mouth kinda reminded me of a cigarette and I got thinking, what if it was? What if there’s a world where people smoke paintbrushes instead of cigarettes and vibrantly colorful smoke plumes into the air from the lungs of skilled “air painters” allowing them to imprint their vision onto the sky. The very air we breathe becomes a canvas for the passionate people of bustling painter cities. Different colors demand to be burned with surgeon level precision and making your vision a permanent part of the atmosphere requires such careful lung control and attention to the temperature of your flame that only one person has ever done it. And it’s speculated that the clouds themselves were their magnum opus. It would make sense, given that would be the side his hand is in. Overall a great piece, I would commission

Thank you for your opinion! I was considering hanging handpan on the other side back in the design stage and even tested how it would look.In the end I thought it woud bring more intrest to the otherwise empty side to balance out the layout. This was awesome and super inspiring. I have creative shell shock with this. There's a ton of stuff I like to do. I love to write, read, play music, sing draw, etc... so I bounce frenetically between these things week over week. I'm alright at all of them, but I'm not particularly great at any (except writing if I can be a bit self aggrandizing, I do it for a living) and it's likely because I don't have the requisite discipline you do to sit there and commit to studying and practicing it. A lot of things have come easy for me and the downside is that I have practically no capacity for arduous grinding. Despite this, I'm always drawing. I subconsciously do it all the time. On napkins at a restaurant, deposit slips at the bank, sketchbooks in traffic, you name it. I think it's time I listened to my brain and commit to this process. Thanks for the inspiration, I'm gonna ride this ephemeral inspo as far as it'll take me and hopefully break this plateau I keep crashing into.

I noticed you were hesitant to use reference, but I would highly suggest to make use of more references-especially if you want to be a pro illustrator. The only time you shouldn’t use references are for things that are already ingrained in your mind. That’s why Mark doesn’t use refs for his character illustrations, it’s because he has mastered anatomy and gesture.

I often use a lot of references but Marc brunet specyficly for the month of december asked to not use reference to check your capabilities.Thats why I tried avoiding them while illustrating. I think you are defenetly right about this- no reference, no learning

I personally see a huge improvement. I think you will be employable for concept art because you can tell a good story in your artwork and illustrations. I think also, as a story board artist you would be able to get a job. You have a lot of talent. I think you’re biggest hurdle is your anatomy. You need to work on your anatomy of your figures and don’t be afraid to use references, I recommend a book called the complete guide to drawing action manga a step-by-step artist handbook. Since your work is more stylized than realistic and it’s leading towards manga style work, I think this would be a great book to help you and it doesn’t cost very much around $15 I use this book myself. Using Pinterest would be very good for you as well. Your rendering is very good and have a good sense of values and your stories are full imagination. Once you master anatomy you will go far.😊

I am greatful for your opinion :) to cover everthing in one answer I will surely take a look at the book you recomended. As I said my anatomy is lacking a lot so any boost in that matter is welcome. I feel like the worst thing about the material on art on youtube is the whole ''git gud fast'' and ''learn it all in one year!'' type of content, if you care about your art and you wanna be albe to draw a lot of different stuff (people, background, animals, props, and be able to design your own) you will never get all that on 1 year, art needs time, lots of time, 5 years at least for most people before you're actually comfortable.

You did improve a lot, good work 👍👍. The final character, i think the trinket on the back is too distracting, with the runes it makes the back too important i think. Id get rid of it or add the trinket to the wrist or the runes to other badnages like those coming out of the neck and swaying. Also the shoulderpad should be on the other side? Like its a pice of armor, if hes somehow going to fight, hed want to protect his remaining arm no? Keep it up :)
@CutterflyArts8 ай бұрын
Hey, I appreaciete your thoughts about the design.The trinket I assume you mean the handpan hanging on the belt. Its supposed to hang on the side but in this pose it has to be visible in some way. I tried to make it not distracting as much as I could. The runes are supposed to bring your attention to the center of the character where his soul is locked as it is an important design element. The peace of armor is more of a remain from the times when he was alive I doubt any living creature would attack him now :p I am open to disscusion if you want to talk some more about it. I the end I like your ideas and you have a reasonable logic behind them!

So from what I see- It feels like- you neglected structure. Not sure if Marc included it in his lesson plan or not- but Structure is the most noticeably missing thing. And also- the most essential thing that would alter this art from- flat to dynamic and round, and hireable. Right now, I'd say no, I wouldn't hire you. You are drawing from what feels like an impression. Your arms, legs, hands, - everything, is still only a symbol of what you are attempting to create. You aren't actually recreating those forms, but impressions of those forms. Silohetes more so then volumes. If you can master structure, volume, and form, then you can move on to placing those forms into perspective, and foreshortening them. They will no longer be flat- but real then. You seem to be focusing on rendering before fully seeing form, and rendering on a flat form, creates flat renders. You need complete structure first. You show the signs of someone mimicking understanding of anatomy, not full comprehension. When you can wrap around every shape, instead of drawing the "flat sillohete of a limb-syndrome"- then your forms will look full and complete, you'll have leveled up. But, structure comes first. Then perspective, then light logic, then color. For example, the foxes legs are what look like highly rendered stick figures. The folds on the cloth are dynamic, but the arm itself exists one what feels like exactly the flat plan of the screen, offering an illusion of light touching it. The colors themselves are not adept yet to the ins and outs of color theory in digital media- as the colors have the classic "muddy" look. You've leveled up in a very "refinement of flaws" kind of way. You've made progress at making what you know, look better, but it doesn't feel like you learned anything new. That- I think is a flaw in the Marc's course. Perhaps its not teaching you what it should have. I'd highly recommend: Drawing on the Right Side of The Brain (to elvate your overall skills at observation) Drawabox (for help with basics of structure, construction, and form.) Scott Roberts How to Draw (for a master course in perspecitve) and Scott Roberst How to Render (for a master course in color and light.) Color and Light, by James Gurney is also another very helpful tool. Anatomy books are a dime a dozen, and all will help so long as they have real people in them. Those things create a far better educational foundation, I think.
@CutterflyArts9 ай бұрын
That is very helpful constructive criticism.If you refer to a structure as a building blocks in form of basic shapes then I think the challenge schedule covered that in march.I might covered it too vaguely and since this is such an important fundamental instead of using it my mind reverted to gut feeling.Thanks to you i know where to put my focus in upcoming year. Big thanks for sharing your input!

To be honest, I don't consider myself talented, so in my mind I'm worried it may take me longer than 2 years (I said "longer" than 2 years, not in 2 years) to feel like I'm finally getting good enough to start earning money even if I see someone else getting there faster. And this is coming from someone who actually have the art school course too from Marc. Hack, some part of me even worry that I'll never get good even if I practice everysingle day. That being said, I still like seeing others getting there in just 1 year though, even if I don't consider myself talented, even if I'm abit concerned that it might take me triple the amount of time to get to that point, it's still encouraging to see that being possible for other people, on the plus side that does mean I won't disappoint myself it I don't get good in 2 years, though I am scared as of right now because of it. Since I'm pretty new, hopefully I can get good, in 2 years if not 1 just like how I was recommended to draw for 2 years. Hopefully, lol XD

Personally I think there are better ways to learn. Digital art allows too much leeway via adjustments that aren't tactile like they are in traditional art. If you were to approach your drawings in the digital space the same way as a traditional drawing, you might be able to see the relationship between your incorrect lines and your corrected ones better, and improve faster. I learned by using pencil only at first, which I recommend, because not only are you forced to find the proper relationships between shapes, but you're working with values only, which adds dimension to the work, and really helps you define shape and measurement. When I jumped into color (after a year), I took to it instantly because I understood the value behind the colors. As far as selling the art? People will buy it, I'm sure. I've seen people buy character and fan art from artists at your level.
@CutterflyArts9 ай бұрын
Its not like I don't draw traditional at all. it is my preference to work full digital if possible but from time to time especialy when I travel I carry my skechbook everywhere and observe life subjects. I do think that drawing in grayscale helps with color (thats why I do it first) and drawing traditional is great experience gain. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

I feel like you are in a great path! Ive noticed that you lack fundamentals, but people have theis own pathes, sometimes you learn something firts that i didnt and vice versa I would say that you have great ideias, but when you actually write and plan, it goes reeaallly well That said, i would recomend you take some forms study, and increase the shading and the complexity of the forms, just cubes, spheres, etc Maybe if you take some days to study the simplest study of perspective, and then implement light studies to just forms. Then increase the studies putting the forms in backgrounds, simple at first, and then put more lights and things that can challenge the colors of the forms You can also do texture studies on simples spheres and increase the lights and sahding, and try to put them in morr backgrounds, using photos for exemple Then after that i would recomend to you to learn anatomy. Unfortunally it is very time consuming, but after learning the gesture that you learned, it will help you a lot

I can tell you improved for sure. I still feel you missed marc tutorials on colouring though? your values are super toned down so your final re-design looks very muddy because of it. Maybe try painting using only greyscale so you train values better, since they're lacking, and color with gradients maybe, just for experiment. By the way i like the hand pose, and the fox is really cool if it has some more texture on the fur, and her ears plus that headband seem weirdly not connected. I feel like you can literally paint over your drawing with a multiply layer to bring values in, then erase the parts which should have lighting and do some of that color transition from light to darkness, and you have a 10x better piece that actually looks professional. Also avoid tangent lines, thumb and index fingers stand out for example since contrast.
@CutterflyArts9 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your opinion, to address the coloring part maby you missed it but grayscale into maps is how I usually do coloring 16:17. About the fox I could have put more focus onto him but I was running out of time in this month so I aimed for ok feeling If I really wanted to make him polished I would do a seperate design sheet, you are right about the headband now that I think about it. About the values in the final image maby I dont see something that you do but when I tried to push the darks the character looked out of setting since its a full sun desert I also got reasured by user feedback that values are good 22:12 And how my images could look professional its been only one year :) Still there is a lot to learn for me. From my experience, I'd recommend you pick up basic pencil and a sketchbook and learn from there. Digital drawing promotes bad techniques (you can move, delete bad lines and body parts) and in the end you are never truly confident in what you're drawing. Honestly, I'm not a fan of this challenge in general haha, cause it tries to teach you too many things at once! You even said so yourself - you lack anatomy skills and I agree, 2 months for that is just not enough. I guess I would advise you to hold on on learning color theory, environment or composition studies and just drill face and body anatomy, gesture drawing. There's great books about that, probably more famous ones are Michael Hampton and Uldis Zarins.
