For today's challenge, we are seeing how long our money can go in a food market here in Mexico City! This was also my first time feeling extremely unwelcomed and that wasn't too comfortable. Tune in to find out if what I got was worth the coins!

You explored the San Juan Pugibet Market, renowned for its array of 'exotic' goods. While the market is known for its unique offerings, it tends to be pricier compared to conventional markets. Interestingly, in close proximity lies another market known as San Juan Arcos de Belém, one of the four San Juan Public Markets. This particular market boasts more budget-friendly prices, making it a preferable choice. The former, however, is often regarded as a tourist spot. So, no, you didn´t get scammed, you just went to a whitexican market where people like to pretend they know about food.

@@itsjasminegiselle Find out where the closest tianguis(Mexican version of a farmers market)sets up and what day/s,that's where you'll find the freshest, cheapest and best food and remember that most of not all market stalls usually have the prices clearly shown in the signs they display.

Hi! You can go to Mercado Medellin (believe you live in Condesa, so it’s much closer than San Juan Market), a lot of American people go there, the attendants are kinder and you will pay at most 300 pesos for what you got. There you can get to know people in casual situations.

I love CDMX! I lived in Merida for the last 3 years. It really helps to learn Spanish. I think the locals in CDMX are tired of expats not speaking Spanish or even trying. Another tip is to maybe avoid filming folks or blur their faces. They will look at you rude if they think you're recording them without permission. It's a lot more courtesy and respectful that way. Good luck!

It seems like they were not able to speak or understand much of what you were saying in English, And they didn’t seem to care or give an effort at meeting you halfway to reach an understanding. (The French are notorious for this btw, and will often times refuse to speak / acknowledge English speaking foreigners) Using Google translate might help. But I think using the Spanish you do know would help in not being ignored or feeling unwelcome. As for the stares- it could be because you stick out for multiple reasons, and are also holding a camera while speaking English. Hope this helps, it’s always great to see someone out traveling and having fun!

I visited QRO last month for the very first time. It was my first time out of the US and I didn't know what to expect. I did go to one of the markets and it was a struggle because I speak very (very) little Spanish. However, the people that I met there were extremely kind. I mean, one guy went above and beyond to help me by leaving his "store" in the market to walk me down to another "store" in the market so I could purchase some rice. Just was NOT EXPECTING this level of kindness, even though I had seen many videos talking about how people in Mexico (in particular QRO) were very friendly for the most part. THAT BEING SAID: I did get scammed! Lol! I was walking through the market and there were two ladies just kind of set up in the market but not in a booth. They both just had a table and a chair if I remember correctly. I know one was selling vegetables...not sure what the other lady was selling. I saw the first lady was selling bags of garlic and I wanted to get some. She told me 30 pesos. Well, I was not familiar Mexican currency as well as I should have been. I had some coins in my pocket and just grabbed all of them and held them out to her, asking her to show me how much I had and if it was enough. If I had taken the time to READ, I would have seen the amount on the coins. All she said was Yes. I said, Yes? All of them? She said Yes. And (dumb me) I gave her all of them. Later when I got back to the Airbnb, I looked at some coins I still left and realized that I had to have given her over 100 pesos. I felt bad but only for a split second. I figured if that was the worst thing that happened on this trip, I was coming out way ahead (and it was the worst part of the trip, because the rest was absolutely amazing).

Before you go out, you should get a notebook and write down some basic questions and words for what you plan to do. If you are going to buy fruit, then have some of the words written down. I do that right here in the states whenever I go out to try to speak Spanish at an authentic mexican restaurant and it goes so much better. :) I am living through your life right now. Someday, I hope to have these experiences like you.

I went to Mexico City last year and at a market for exotic fruits they tried charging more for a dragon fruit. I would recommend asking how much stuff costs and comparing to other vendors in the same market or other markets. I ended coming across a way cheaper dragon fruit at a walmart. To ask for prices in Spanish, just grab the fruit show it to them and ask “cuanto?” (Pronounced “Kwan-Toe” & meaning “how much”). The orange thing you grabbed is a fruit called persimmon. My Spanish isn’t 100% fluent so I’d use google translate app a’lot and would convert prices on my calculator.

Ok Jasmine, Me too , I have been alone in another Country, and I know what you feel, that these people don´t puy any attention to your needs. These people want you to push your Spanish, start speaking new words each time, how ever It comes out, they would love to hear you try and speak some words in Spanish, not all but some words would help you Tons. And when you try to speak, new good things happen. But when you don´t push to speak, they all turn their back, because thats their way of not knowing what to Do. Another sugestion is, if you are not sure about numbers in spanish, you can tell them to write the Amount, or show you the calculator. When you´re in the Mercado and If you Catch the wrong Total and pay, they might just keep Quiet, and then they see you leaving. Any way I can promise you that with some words in spanish your interaction will be much much better, and Yes. And when trying to speak, you can even Screw Up all your sentence. laugh and have Fun, mexicans love to joke all the time, they would love to hear your "funny Spanish", Now you have a hole new different buy experience. I think you payed too much. Never buy to that guy again. You have more, more options. Another thing about the "freaky" looks that you sometimes feel , It is not a friendly look with a smile that you could expect, no , these people in the markets, maybe have zero education and don´t know anything else but basic Big City Survival Skills, no time for smiles. Your relaxed Vibe is really nice . You´ll be fine. Hope you are fine !

Dragon fruit in mexico is usually .39 -71 cents a pound Cherimoya is 1.99 to 3.99 a pound in mexico Papaya is 0.25 cents to 0.28 cents a pound Pomegranates in mexico .80 cents to 85 cents a pound. Plums about 50 cent a pound I can't identify the other fruits. But the ones I mentioned including your favorite the most expensive fruit of all cherimoya and the 4 others should of cost no more than 25 - 27 dollars. And that's using the high end of the prices . You had a 11 pieces of fruit and your favorite is the most expensive of them all. I think he charged you double for the expensive items. And I feel like the mean mugs didn't have anything to do with your fliming. Most people have pretty obvious reactions when they dont like being recorded.I believe the mean mugs just came from some mean people. Overall most people where minding their own just as you were.

I think that price was way too high for what you bought(got)... I'm born and raised California, and go to Mexico every now and then. The prices there in the markets are much cheaper than the USA. I buy fruits and vegetables all of the time, and I think you paid too much... However I have family that moved to Africa and the language and cultural barriers make a difference. Once you learn the culture and language things will be much better... You're doing a great job, keep up the great work. 👑👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤️🥳

I feel a little bad because when I stayed in Mexico City, I stayed haggling them in the prices to where when I would come, they just gave me the cheapest rate. lol. I would tell them, Si vas a cobrar tanto, se los compraré a otro proveedor. Dame un precio razonable ya que todos sobrevivimos aquí. They would go way way down to price 😅

I've been going to various parts of Mexico and (several other foriegn countries) since I was a child, and yes I think you paid too much($50) for that handful of fruit... I understand the cost of living has inclined everywhere, but especially when you're a American tourist it seems you always get charged more no matter what country you go to...

Great video. I didn’t like Mexico. You would love Peru. The food is amazing, the people polite and so much culture. Didn’t like Mexico after spending time in Peru.

You ultimately gotta decide if you're gonna be a full time tourist...cus if you're staying long-term you need to assimilate into the culture and not be like many paisanos in the US do ... refusing to learn the language and staying in hispanic areas etc.
