It’s funny how some people read and respond to a title rather than watching the video. My reasons for using a main dealer aside, I am simply sharing my experience and a lot of the questions I am being asked, I asked the dealer. Take from that what you will :)

I watched the video with great interest. There's time and place for the dealer. I hear your reasons, I just don't agree with them. However, my L405 needed a new xenon bulb and I don't have the expertise to DIY that so I paid $400 for them to do it. Most of it was labor cost of course. I had warranty work to be done so it was already there and I received a free loaner for a week. Strategic use of dealerships makes sense.

If it were me, I’d have kicked up a big fuss with the dealership on the basis that so much work needed doing so soon after buying the car. That can’t be fair, as it suggests that their 70 point check on pre-owned cars is just bollocks. I would still approach them and state something along these lines. Excellent video tho!

The point most people are missing is that if you purchase a large car then you are going to get large bills , that’s the nature of the beast . There are quite a few totally unnecessary rude comments but haters just love getting into print at every opportunity because of their sad little existence . I can’t afford such a car but good luck to those who can .

Took my Volvo to the local dealer for a service years back and they ‘recommended’ a full new exhaust as it was ‘corroding’. Wasnt convinced so said no. That exhaust lasted another 80,000 miles and was only replaced as I chose to get a custom twin exhaust made. Utter gangsters, never went back (apart from having a Volvo company car as well and had no choice).

17 plate Subaru WRX STi, 45,000 miles. Disks and pads all round, just over £2k from dealers. Bought upgrade from a specialist performance shop, £550, fitted myself. Brake fluid change, dealership wanted £300. Quality fluid and a couple of hours bleeding cost me £40 Tyres were going to be £820, but went to MyTyres online and got the same tyres ordered and fitted for £500. The standard service I left to Subaru which was around £300 as I wanted full dealer service record for resale value. Car then went for its first MOT and it flew through with no advisories. I have had 3 Land Rovers in the past and they all went to specialist garages. I trusted the mechanics as Landrovers were there passion, not just a job.

It's true Daniel was overcharged but that's to be expected from a main dealer such as Landrover. Certainly think some people are being way too harsh and nasty to Daniel. Yes, he is a bit naive and extravagant with his car purchases but he's just learning every day like we all are. No need to rub salt in the wound. Be nicer! Thank you for sharing your honest experiences Daniel, I for one appreciate it.

I've been running an Autobiography for 125k miles now. Bought as a one owner car with 38k miles from a LR main dealer. Great car, hence I've kept it, but the dealer was shocking. I pointed out a few things they missed on their 'pre sale inspection'. They failed to fix some of them, but it went back and was done eventually. Couple of services as under warranty, both hopeless. Mistakes made, created new problems. I've had it maintained at an independent since and it's been great. I'll buy another, but be very careful with the main dealers. They have your trousers down every time.

I purchased a 12 months old Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic from a Land Rover Main dealer with less than 12 thousand miles on the clock, 12 months later same dealer replaced a couple of oil seals under warranty, 18,000 miles at just short of 3 years old it was booked into the same dealer for its 3rd service and first MOT, received a phone call from the dealer saying that it needed all the front suspension bushes replacing so it would pass the MOT, I told them to go ahead and replace them as there were still 6 days left on the warranty, they then got back to me and said the bushes were not as worn as they first thought, several angry telephone conversation later including several to Land Rover themselves, they finally agreed to replace the bushes free of charge. 12 months later, 24,000 miles, 4 service, 2nd MOT, phone call from the same dealer new front suspension bushes needed in order to pass MOT, a full week of arguing with the dealer and Land Rover, they agreed that the bushes did not need replacing and blamed an over eager mechanic, sold the vehicle after that got sick of the Stealer ship not checking their own records as to what work had been carried out on a vehicle that they sold.

Three different tyres would have been a major red flag for me. I've had cars like that in the past and it's a warning that the previous owner spent the minimum on maintenance, leaving the next owner to pick up the bill. Whenever buying a car have a real think about why the previous owner is getting rid of it.
@OllieTT

Couldn't agree more. If it doesn't have 4 matching tyres, or at least matching tyres on each axel (of a decent brand) I always walk away. I don't even care if they're worn out, I'll happily replace them. It's all about the previous owners mindset.

When I had two RRS I always had the basic servicing carried out by JLR, but if they recommended work I always had the work done elsewhere (much cheaper) with genuine JLR parts, when I chopped them in at the same dealers as far as they were concerned it had JLR service history, I never lost a penny on selling them back. On later JLR models I purchased I bought the 5 year servicing pack, but yet again, had all other work done at Specialist with genuine parts. Like many people I have had numerous Land Rover vehicles and the three JLR dealers that I have used have always tried to rip me off. I have had numerous experiences where they have told me I need a lot of work done or new tyres and the Specialist that I have used have often said it is total nonsense; this includes urgent disc and pads that lasted for another two years and new tyres that were required to replace tyres that still had 4/5mm tread. I have had disputes with one of the dealerships where top Engineers from Solihull came to view my car over things the local JLR tried to charge me for. I appreciate there are probably good dealerships out there but to be honest you need to ‘wise up’ to the money grabbing tactics that these dealerships use. I don’t think it’s personal they just view everybody as a ‘cash cow’.

This is a very useful clarification. Presumably you got a good enough deal on the tyres. The suspension bushes, etc, that is the stuff that really bugs me. After 6 Discovery’s I have felt the pain. The Disco 3 (x2) was the last full size LR. I had. These are seriously heavy, heavy cars. I sopped buying them when I stopped towing. This is an area that needs rectified. The suspension should be way more durable. Given the increasingly ridiculous wheel sizes being deployed, something radical is required. Thanks for sharing. My wife still misses them. I miss them, but not the expense.....

I bought one last month 2015 SDV6 Autobiography, also rushed decision, was going to buy a Merc.. so far I had to also do front and rear brake discs and pads (£500 total for Brembo parts + done the work myself) + 2 new tyres, fix leaking rear diff (£1100), replace blown Intake manifold (£1200 for both as precaution) and still waiting on a bill for a leaking coolant from EGR cooler (that will be about £1100 at least). Car was main dealer for most years, I am now doing everything myself and through warranty I got from the dealer I got it from, otherwise it would be probably about £10k total with LR - it is a cool car though.

Nice video! A bit of advise from a Range Rover owner they are as you said brilliant cars. However do not waste your cash LR main dealers they are brilliant however labour ways so expensive ........it won’t help with depreciation. also you will need to maintain your car quite a bit is the way it is with Range Rovers so you will expend a fortune on things that are quite simple to work on. Find a good specialised garage and you will be fine.

I agree with the other comments. You do not expect suspension bushes to go on a 3 year car nor to have to replace all brake discs _- pads yes, but main dealers always try to rip you off with unnecessary replacement of discs. Also if the car was inspected and sold as an approved used why weren't these things picked up. I would always get the service done at the dealer for the history but get any other work inc tyres done elsewhere. This would have saved you around £2,000!

Actually there is another very good reason to have your car fixed by a main dealer - especially with these cars. The crank snapped on my 7 year old RRS at 65k and my main dealer was instrumental in getting a replacement engine FOC due to them having a large JLR concession. Had I serviced and bought through an independent they would not have been interested in helping. Having said that, I only got them to service the car and fix any faults. Tyres and brakes can be double the price of Kwik Fit, but it is sometimes the case of can you be bothered to arrange this especially if the advisories came up during an MOT.
@adriangraffham592
@adriangraffham592 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, once the car is out of warranty people tend to suddenly decide not to maintain their cars to such a high standard. Truth is machines do fail, but if you have a solid main dealer history the network is far more likely to look favorably on a goodwill claim for a failure outside of warranty. You can't go to Joe Bloggs for all your servicing and then expect the main dealer network to pay for a failure outside warranty.

I have a Range Rover sport and I am lucky to have a great specialist within 10 miles of my home. In my two years of ownership, I have had the usual- tyres, tracking, brake pads and disks. The main problem I’ve had apart from this is it has eaten two electronic parking brake modules. At £1100 a go, the joke is getting old 😅. But I will say, when it’s running sound and having no issues- it’s a great car. It will be leaving me soon for a new home and I’ll be looking for a pocket rocket as I really don’t need such a big vehicle currently. Great videos Dan! Keep going!

I bought a '14 RRS as a CPO from a dealer. They showed me the service paperwork for the work they did on the car before they sold it - new discs & pads, new tyres, and a coupe of other things with a retail cost of $4400 - and the CPO checklist that detailed the work required to comply with CPO. If this was a CPO vehicle from the dealer, I'd go to LandRover to question the validity of the delaer certification

OY is the reg used by JLR for their company cars. Had a Range Rover Sport which was ok until it rained, then it leaked via all the doors. They also tried to con me on the disc and pad routine. They, of course, they did need replacing. Note that if the engine fails, which they do, it’s a body off Jon which is thousands and thousands.

Also I recently upgraded the Sat Nav for £120, although not live and as good as google maps it was still quite impressive. I have read much about RRs and main dealers and agree with most that is said. However, I have owned a Sport 3.0 SD from new and it will be six years old in May. Other than the 5yr service plan (purchased when new for £900) it has cost very little for items not included - front brake pads and brake fluid change. The main dealers have always recommended a host of additional and very expensive items that I have declined and make sure that I get it MOT’d with an independent as the main dealers advised some of the work constituted failure although it never has. The car has just covered 52k miles and the tyres changed although they were still legal! The car is looked after although not cosseted and a couple of expensive repairs were completed under warranty with no hassle

Main dealers basically want to charge you to get the car in "as new" mechanical condition. So a disc may be part worn, but still have a year or 2 of safe driving for the average motorist. Also, with extended service intervals on many cars, the dealer probably would want to change the discs even if there was 20k or more miles of wear left.

I can understand your reasons for wanting a MD to carry out the work. There is savings to be had on thos brake prices, if you ring around the MD local is to you and get their best price, for instance you can get front and back discs and pads done for around £750. Dont think just cos its a MD they don't have flexibility in their pricing. Depending on how long yo intend keeping the car, ask your MD for a service plan. They're not transferable out of the dealer network but a saving can be had paying up front.

There aren't many farmers buying 80 grand RRS's new. With 23k and 3 years old what has happened here is someone has leased it on the standard 8,000 per year deal, ragged the hell out of it and given it back to the lease company. I've bought a couple of ex-lease cars myself they have both clearly been driven like they were stolen but after getting them back to shape they went on for a long time.

Do yourself a favour and use an independent with a good reputation. You will save a decent chunk of money and get better service. I suspect the main dealer has taken you for a ride (I had this once, tried telling me I needed new brakes. The brakes in question had only been on the car 6 months!). Some main dealers are a lot better than others, so do your research if you plan to keep using them.

Whilst in part I agree, especially with a newer car its good to have a Main Dealers stamp in the service record. But items such as wipers, brakes, discs and TYRES! no one should ever pay them for these items; their markup is bordering on criminal. A good Land Rover Indie will cut your bills in half. And in truth do better work, will understand your car and its issues. JLR have a lot of ‘technicians’ who are great at reading codes, but they don’t have many actual mechanics. Still if you can afford it, I can’t, I suppose you make your choice and pay the bills.

Engine fails on the 3.0 SDV6 and TDV6 is more common than you think and happens on Disco's L405, L494, and Jag's So using a dealer is relative to a certain age but the idea of goodwill is not really their unless you are the only owner and bought from new!

Unfortunately range rovers depreciate and have a number of mechanical and electrical issues real shame, I think I’d probably get a discovery sport given the choice although the same problems probably plague them! Maybe a Tesla model x in the future? Also notice people who have money don’t respect their cars as much , they have them a few years don’t spend any money on them and hand them back with all the problems :(

Good video! Regarding the question whether to keep it serviced by Land Rover, from personal experience I would say its not worth it. The crankshaft just went on my Discovery HSE Sdv6 from late 2015 with only 55k miles. Full Lr service history. After much haggling and time wasted on my part (the car has been at the dealer for a month now), LR offered 30% only towards a recon engine. This basically brings it into line with the cost of a NEW engine fitted by a trusted independent specialist! So in conclusion, loyalty doesn't pay off, save the money in case one day you have the same problem (and I hope you don't) as many others and have to fork out for a new engine! #sdv6 #tdv6 #landrover #crankshaft

If you don't want hefty bills buy an Astra or a Focus. You can't expect to buy what was once an £80k+ car and then run it on a shoestring. And ask yourself this, would you buy a used one that had been?

There is an irony in the fact that people always look for main dealer history when looking for cars but do they really live up to the image of being professional and truthful? Probably? Possibly? Not sure about that. Who carried out your work? Were they trained, experienced and knowledgeable? Was it the new apprentice? Did anyone check the work? You have no idea unless you know them really well. But that being said, you could get equally ripped off or badly let down by non main dealers. If I had to guess what you should have paid I would have thought may be 25% of what you shelled out. Good luck in future is all I can say.

Should always get a second opinion from a friendly local mechanic you trust before you book it back in for the work to be done (you can always get the service book stamped and then get the mechanicals fixed by a friendly local mechanic). The old "you need new disc & pads" is a classic by dealers to try and rip you off, most people think brakes are probably too important to take any risks with so it's pay day for the dealers. Agree about your reasoning for the full service history but never take their word as gospel unless you want to be ripped off by them every time you take your car in for a service. Also never get your car MOT'd by a dealer, they'll pull the same sort of trick.

More money than sense.Needed workshop standards for sales stock.........you paid for it instead of the dealer. 4 odd tyres on a car like that in dealer stock is a bit of a give away on how it has been treated and what problems were inherent......and they made you inherit them. the previous owner was having tyre problems,got a quote and then decided to get rid.

Having had similar work carried out on my 2011 L322 recently (70 k miles I had new arms and bushings front and back, 4 new tyres, some pads, a calliper and a few other items) Ive paid nothing like that much, probably 1500 tops. Service costs separately. All through a specialist that didn't serve you cappuccinos! I've had similar calls from BMW service desks having taken a car in for just 1 job or a small service. Its a tactic in some cases. I had a 330d E92 that I'd picked up just 2 month before under approved warranty scheme through BMW and was told it needed all new disks and pads plus brake fluid. I decided to drive back to that dealership rather than give an answer (I worked from home so I could manage my own time) and ask face to face why a car I had just bought and only done 1500 miles in needed all that ? The guys face went white... and so either it was true and the point check was bollocks or the pads were mid life and they were pulling a fast one, or a mistake was made.. We all went into the bay and watched as callipers were used to measure the thickness and it was ok. If your miles were reasonable between buying and the service (1 year) and all the bushings and indeed pads / disks (but especially the bushings) had to be replaced then as someone else commented their point check system was terrible and I think they should have helped out there.

I didn't even get the cappuccino! With my other cars all of the work done is carried out by specialists. Given this is the car my children travel in, I think having the work done 'properly by a dealer' blinded my judgment a little.

@@captainblack1021 I'd certainly have to agree re. the tyres. Main dealers simply do not have the buying power as national tyre specialists. It's not a case of putting huge mark up on them, we don't get the discount in the first place so they are bought in at a far higher cost to begin with. What you are paying for then is convenience. How many people go to a main dealer for the basic service, then 'my mate who's a mechanic' for the additional jobs, then to a tyre center for the tyres? Don't know about you but my time is worth more than a few quid saved scurrying around the countryside.

There is 0 added value to a dealership repair vs. independent. I'm hoping this was a joke and you really didn't spend 5000 pounds on the car. All in US Dollars: Wipers front and rear: $50 DIY Front Brakes/rotors: $600 (make sure it's NOT OEM, their pads do not wear well) Rear Brakes/rotors: $600 (make sure it's NOT OEM, their pads do not wear well) 4 Tires from TireRack: $800 Mounting/balance/alignment: $300 Cabin Filter/engine air filter: $60 DIY AdBlue: $20 (generic) DIY I'd think the brushings/control arms would be under warranty as I've had mine replaced for free.

Well the AdBlue top up is all of £19.50 for 20L from EBay. The rest is just a joke. I think I would have asked for all the parts back they replaced. At one time it was the pads that wore out but the pads are so hard it wears the discs out now so the manufacturers can charge what they like. Certainly think you got shafted BIG Time.

A few questions.... Did all of the odd tyres not give you a hint that the previous owner had obviously been skint and would likely have done the same with overall maintenance and... How much residual value would a full dealer service history retain VS. The actual cost of that history compared to a trusted independant ? Price up a set of discs and pads online you will be shocked.
