Have you ever done something and right afterward realized you may have have made a huge mistakes? Well...me too.
Last week I decided that since it had cooled down it would be a good time to spray some broadleaf that was invading my lawn. What could go wrong, right? Well I'll tell you that story in this video along with updates on the bluegrass monostands, creeping charlie issues, and a lot of good things too.

So if I'm following your videos, you recently applied fertilizer, and now you're applying herbicide. Isn't it usually the other way around. I'm trying to figure out which I should do. I have a lot of weeds in my front yard and a few in the back. Haven't stopped fertilizer this year yet. Soup analysis showed lack of nitrogen, and excess of the other nutrients. I was going to stay spreading tenacity and speedzone, then apply fertilizer in like 6 weeks. What do you recommend?

Ryan, great content as usual. In your slower winter months you should consider doing vinwiki (channel) style interviews. You could probably fill an entire winter with “mistake” type stories from fellow DIY lawn care nuts. For example……. Last year I aerated with my pull behind tractor argi-fab aerator. I was in a hurry, so I grabbed the first heavy thing I could find to help pull deeper cores. My mistake was grabbing the 50 lbs salt pellet bag for my well filtration system. I have almost 40,000 square feet of turf grass and drove all the way around the property. When I stopped, you guessed it, the bag had split open leaving a trail of salt from the front down to the back. Here is where the story gets good. I knew that was an immediate death sentence for the grass. Flushing it out with water wouldn’t work. So, I grabbed the shop vac and spent 3 HOURS vacuuming my lawn. My neighbors already think I’m a crazy lawn nut, but that sight made me look absolutely certifiable. Alas, the crisis was averted and the lawn had zero lasting effects.

I did the same thing. Mixed 2 gallons of Tenacity and Speed Zone to spot spray 1500 sqft… and used all of it. So some areas got a lot of attention. I agree that the cooler temps played a factor in how they responded. No damage to the turf.

I HATED the blue dye until I found one on Amazon that comes in a cylindrical bottle with a small circular hole in it. It's basically a squeeze bottle and makes it soo much easier to get into the sprayer. With my putting green I have to be extremely precise spraying so I'm always using the dye.

Hey Ryan - I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your honesty and straight, no BS delivery - also when things don't go as hoped or expected. Your lawns look amazing - especially in contrast with your neighbours' - I must assume they are not interested in having such beautiful surroundings - I would have hired you long ago! Unfortunately I can't necessarily use all the info you deliver directly since I live in Switzerland and products, plants, weeds etc. are different here, but I love to pick up your tips and try and apply them to my situation. Wishing you all the best, Rob

Don't feel so bad. it's been cooler than normal here (75ish) so I jumped the gun and took my grass down from 4" to 2.5" in preparation for overseeding. Forecast for next 2 weeks is back in the 90s. I expect 40,000 sq/ft of dust and straw now

I've always taken pretty good care of my lawn, crabgrass I've been "mostly" able to control with regular applications of Scott's corn gluten, but always struggled with it, as well creeping charlie and clover and some dandelions. Been watching your vids for the past six months or so, have followed some of your advice and, this year, zero crabgrass, zero creeping charlie, zero broadleaf weeds. Just a bit of clover on the older section of the yard that I can't seem to completely eliminate. But otherwise, the yard is lush, green, thick and weed-free. It's never looked better. Thanks for the guidance. Brilliant videos, always looking forward to the next one...

This video is so eerie in how it relates to me but with opposite results. I had my lawn looking really great early Spring. However, I had a lot of weeds creeping all over so I tried a blanket application of Syngenta Tenacity with dye added. What a disaster all around. I spilled the dye on the sidewalk, got it all over my hands, and applied wearing sneakers. When I was about to head in to shower I found out my feet were blue. To add to it, I screwed up my application and just killed so many areas of grass. It was deflating.

I ran into this issue once trying to spot spray the weeds popping up in the rocks on the side of my house, mixed up enough for 1000sqft, which should have been more than enough. because i wasn't just walking and blanket spraying at the pace im use to, i used probably 5x as much herbicide on the weeds as I needed. thankfully i cant kill the rocks with it :)

I overapplied mesotrione last fall killing bentgrass. Luckily I spot sprayed the big patches and there was no real grass in there anyway. It was a lot of big thick patches of it I killed. I am really surprised it didn't suppress my seedlings when I re-seeded. This year I had some bentgrass come back and I checked like 10 times to make sure I was using the right amount. It is dying. At least this time it is mostly my good grass with a few patches of thin bentgrass coming in so once it dies my fescue will fill back in. The bentgrass had taken over about 1/4 of my yard, I am impressed with the results from last years kill even though some patches are trying to grow back. It it very difficult to kill spreading weeds like that so it will take a few battles but My thick grass is winning it over.

My wife banned me from using the blue die. It's virtually impossible not to get 1 spill and its messy. Now when I spray I just use a regular pump sprayer, not battery operated, but I always have a good idea how much I sprayed based on the weight I'm holding. My yard is only 3500 sq ft though so I can get away with a regular pump sprayer.

Something I ended up learning is that I'm much better at taking care of my yard than TruGreen. Funnily enough the only research I've really done has been your videos and one other person. Weird how that can put you on level with some lawn mega corporation. So yeah, thanks for your work. I've really appreciated getting a handle on things. I still really don't like the lawn they put between sidewalks and the road, I feel like there has to be a better solution for that area, but actual lawncare has been enjoyable. The dethatching I'll be doing this fall will be unreal though. The time between owners at this house lead to some thatch that you could lose a dog in. Wild stuff. But I've at least got weeds under control for now! (They were incredibly bad when I moved in) Looking forward to just kinda restarting everything in the fall and getting a full tall fescue lawn. I know you prefer the shorter stuff but I'm so smitten by the long almost wheatlike stalks of fescue that is given a little time.

So…I had to spray my entire yard because my neighbors don’t take care of their yard (broadleaf/clover). I used Trimec and Lazer. I tried to keep it contained but my hands and feet were completely blue for a week lol. What a mess. It did work fantastic though. I think I need another application but I don’t want to have issues when I overseed in Sep.

Looks like you’re In the clear. But temps were on your side. It’s been only low 80’s for highs in Northeast last couple weeks. I decided to spray some crabgrass that has taken over the outer edges of my front lawn. I was out yesterday morning spot sprayed y front yard. Got a little clover also. Which was a lot worse last year. This year battled some nutsedge. Used sledgehammer to deal with that. A couple weeks ago i sprayed that and it’s yellowing now. Keeping up with Mowing twice a week helps also.

Over seeded my lawn's brown spots and did a fertilizer that was iron rich and my lawn still did not recover. I bought Kentucky blue grass from Scott's and it was more weeds than I could imagine. Kicker was we got 11.9 inches of rain on the east coast .only thing that worked was the tenacity set up with the sprayer . I live in queens NYC, going sod this time will prep lawn before laying. I will be using tall fescue in the back as it is only thing that survived this summer.

Hey Ryan , do you use different sprayers for different application? You mention Speed Zone. I seen in this video on you have a wall of a few different sprayers. I just ordered Tenacity and Surfactant. I been using granular fertilizers and I'm new to the liquid herbicide game. Thanks and always look forward to your videos.

I use the same sprayer for everything but glyphosate. Just rinse it well right after spraying and also spray clean water through the hose.

I’ve got the creeping Charlie/wild violet nastiness too. Do you suggest tzone before fall overseeding or later after the new growth has been mowed a few times? Thanks for all the great content!

Would love some advice on keeping birds away from new seeding. I’ve used Peat Moss, Hay, even a Hawk decoy but they still find it. They weren’t even afraid of the decoy 😂. Advice is needed in CT!

Maybe last resort would be a wood fiber seeding blanket. I don't think they would see it through that and it smothers the whole ground when it gets wet

I got a roll of reflective bird scare tape from the local hardware store, and cut a bunch of strips about 2-3 feet long or so, and attached them with a short piece of string to a bunch of those plant stakes with the loop at the top. So the tape flaps around in the wind a few inches above the grass, it makes some noise and reflects the sunlight. Worked surprisingly well for me. I just placed them all around the yard, maybe 15-20 feet apart or so, focused more on the bare spots. Just took some time to set up, but I saved them for whenever I do another overseeding.

I don't get how you have Rye survive the summers. Here in CT my Rye has browned up even with 11 inches of rain in July and sprinklers. It hates summer. I am cutting at 4"+ because of Fescue/bluegrass mixed in.
