Buy one at Amazon: lon.tv/cxarj (int'l affiliate link) (affiliate link) - I recently had an issue with image retention on my LG C7 OLED television, but after running the pixel refresher program the problem seems to be resolved. I've had my c7 for about a year now. No issues because I use it carefully as anyone who spends over $2k on a TV should. It's simple, stay away from BRIGHT static images for long periods of time. I have mine on for 8-10 hours a day and watch all kinds of content on it. I also game on it anywhere between 8-16 hours a week. Retention WILL happen, but it's nothing to go nuts over. I use the pixel refresher once a month just in case. If you want the best quality in 2019, oled is definitely the product to buy. Just pick take care of it and buy insurance that covers burn in.

I have a Vizio 4k set, and i can see this insanely minute vertical banding similar to what your camera picked up. I swear i've asked 20 people who have been at my place and not a single person can see it, but i can see it, especially during a slow pan with a mostly solid background. Sometimes i hate being so observant / sensitive to screen defects. Blessing and a curse!

At first when I brought my LG C7 I thought I made a great purchase but even if I have a static image sat for a few minutes (not hours) it will get image retention which is odd and also when the display goes to dim grey screen images it shows two vertical bands on the left of the tv display I wouldn’t bother with OLED even if it looks good it will be a waste of money

I had 65” C7 for a year now, never babied it, it’s pretty much on 24/7, never even noticed image retention. I have Apple TV hooked up and on it VLC, which doesn’t have a screensaver, that’s perhaps the only one I should be careful with, otherwise it’s pretty much foolproof.

You don't get real burn-in that easy with these TV's. It is possible, but there is far more needed than one night of static images for that. Image retention might sound scary, but it is not burn-in. The pixels are just tired and need some sleep. The pixel refresher just does that. Normally the TV does so automatically when it has been working for more than 4 hours, just switch it off, and next morning everything is fine again. I personally also use my C7 at 85% brightness; 100% is too bright for my taste, but this also helps prevent burn-in.

Pixels are tired and need some sleep? Lmao talking out of your ass. Even LG confirmed that retention is the early stage of burn-in, and not possible to roll back. @@titmusspaultpaul5 the advice from LG is to run the pixel refresher anytime you watch static content longer than 1hr. It is possible to actually lower the timer from 2000hrs to 1hr in the service menu but it requires you buy a special remote to access it.

@@titmusspaultpaul5 I was thinking about the LG CX OLED but with this tech the possibility of burn in will always be there and as the time goes on it's more guaranteed to eventually occur. Planning the TV for more than just 1 or 2 years so no OLED for me. Samsung Q90T it is what I'm going to buy instead! Best TV of 2020 next gen gaming ready too with one of the four ports which supports HDMI 2.1 This TV is my best bet. Plus consider when purchasing that the Q90T can get much brighter than any OLED well above a 1000 nits without damaging the pixels since it's not organic led tech. LG OLED very cold much darker image. I much prefer the Q90T's warmer brighter image.

I wouldn't say it's bleeding edge. I would say burn in is very well known with oled and its a risk you take by buying it. I personally don't like babying my TV, so I went with a Q9FN and I'm super happy with it. Still has amazing black level and no risk of burning in.
@StreblerPiano

Burn in are indeed the users' fault. It's a well-known risk and every store warns its customers about it. Each OLED brand makes it very very clear to not use it as a classic TV. If a user chooses not to follow that advise, well, why should Sony or LG be responsible and pay for it ? You are responsible for what you do with what you bought. If I buy a glass table and choose to sit on it and it breaks, that's my problem.
@rtec6106

@@StreblerPiano Its not the users fault. Those Tv's are supposed to pass stress tests and clearly they didnt. I'd rather buy a 4k led for a lesser price and watch all day without getting a burn in,than buying an OLED 4K that costs more but i'll only end up watching for a limited time. They have to fix the burn-in issue first, then sell it to the market afterward.

I had this happen on my b7, I woke up and turned my tv on and saw that a screen saver had been pushed when my cats walked across the keyboard and I had a grid across the entire screen. I always set the sleep timer and leave a screen saver on for a bit but I had not checked this screensaver all the way through. Always use solid screens for IR prevention. The pixel refresh did not work all that much. So what I did was to leave a bright white screen up for a full 4 hour sleep timer followed by the pixel refresher. Worked like a charm. It's a sick feeling seeing that IR and thinking is Burn in. I have a plasma from 2010 with about 40k hours in it and have no burn in and I was almost mad at the oled. But its about as resilient as the plasma that I had some instances of carelessness on too. I use both of these tvs as pc monitors and so far so good. The b7 is 7 months old with almost 4k hours on so I was freaking out. But man these tvs look great.

If the graphic was displayed only for a number of hours this should normally not be permanent. Over time it should normally work itself out. When using the built in utility to do a full pixel refresh this uses some lifetime of the screen. There are protections in the OLED panels as like pixel rotation, and power off low intensity pixel refresh.

After seeing some of the top end OLED TV's at CES 2 years ago, several were on my wish list as I waited for prices to come down from astronomical to affordable. Along the way the burn-in situation with OLED's came to light on several tech channels on KZbin, and I started looking for other technology 4k TV's. I'm glad I didn't rush out and purchase one of the OLED's, and I'm still weighing my options in the 75" 4k LCD/LED technology sets, now selling between $1k and $1.8k; much more reasonable.

Just FYI for those watching the 8 series OLEDs from lg go into screensaver mode after a static image has been on the screen for more than a few minutes. The TV will then turn itself off after about 30 minutes. Image Retention/Burn in can only happen if you play the same game for hours a day for days at a time or if you watch the news just as much without watching something else. Samsung is trying to make this a bigger deal than it really is to hype up their QLED line.

No... don't worry. If you experience retention you switch it off and after a few hours it is like new again ( or run the pixel refresher like in the video). There is a lot of confusion about image retention on OLED's. It is not the same as burn in and I don't loose a minute sleep about it. I just enjoy the freaking awesome picture quality every day. OLED's can burn in (after thousands of hours of operation), but think about it as this: Your CRT could burn in if you misused it. Were CRT owners driven mad by burn-in? Not at all, it was not a problem in practise. It's the same with OLED, you don't burn them in that easy.

@danielmantione
@danielmantione 6 жыл бұрын
Let me conclude you are too sensitive for Samsung marketing. Samsung claims that they give you a guarantee, but read the small text, no burn-in guarantee when you use your TV more than average. Hey, that's comes down to exactly the same situation as with LG. That said,, the led lamp behind the LCD screen in the Samsung, won't burn in. Anorganic led's just don't do that. So yes, if you buy Samsung you will indeed be safe against burn-in. But personally I can't care for less. What if my C7 shows signs of burn-in after years? Well, for the money I have saved against a Samsung with FALD backlight, is easily enough to buy a new OLED then, which will have dropped in price, and be technically superior. By then the usefullness Samsung's TV will be quite a bit lower because of their habit of poor software updates.... which not unlikely will be bigger concern in your enjoyance of the TV than burn-in. The most important factor in buying decisions is fear. And Samsungs marketing department knows that very well.

I think what happened here was a freak accident and there was really no way to avoid it. For those looking at a OLED Tv for potential buy . . . The new C8 and B8 sets are MUCH better (30% better) at resisting image retention and burn-in. AND . . . Tv makers get better and better at improving the OLED technology each year. If most people use common sense they should be fine. That said, if you wait another year or two for micro-LED Tvs to hit the market, you probably won't have to worry about burn-in and your picture will be equal to or better than OLED.

What I wanna know is If I give my parents my old sony bravia, do I run the risk of it malfunctioning and barfing up old images of the adult content I watch in the unholy hours? Am I just being paranoid? ...and no it's not a smart tv it's just a regular one 32" flat screen that I plug my laptop into using HDMI. I'm upgrading to a 49" 4K tv and want to give them my old one. It works fine atm.

They need to Come up with a software update to these TVs that is more aggressive about preventing burn in. I actually have an LG AMOLED 4K tv that suffered some minor retention...not sure if it was technically a burn in that was just very light but after a few days it vanished. Happened literally because same reasoning.. one of our things booted up to do an update and just kept damn screen on all night.. came back to see logos and status bars burned in.. The solutions I came up with 1. Disable the ability for HDMI signals to turn display on. 2. I use eco mode which does dim it a bit, but the benefit is it turns itself off after 2 hours of limited on screen movement (anything under 30% of the screen changing) If I’m leaving for a trip, I turn the power off to the entertainment room entirely (unless friends are hanging out watching the place while I’m away)

Yeah recievers are a bad idea unless absolutely necessary. Same thing happened to me with my family's plasma, years ago.. except it WAS burn-in, and they only had like 2 devices plugged in(so why bother with a reciever?!?).. so yeah, it's a completely unnecessary risk on an oled...

I absolutely love my OLED TV, and did a lot of research before buying one. Bottom line? Most people don't have to worry about image retention. In fact, image retention or burn in is less prevalent on OLED than on Plasma TV's. I had a plasma for over 8 years, and did have a little burn in due to the "Netflix" screen being displayed for hours on end when we were not watching. Fortunately, I've noticed the LG panel switch to a screen saver if the same static image is displayed for I think 5 minutes or longer. So, I'm not sure why the OP's TV screen saver didn't come on...
@GraveUypo
@GraveUypo 5 жыл бұрын
Its the opposite, plasmas were much less prone to permanent burn in. Late models might never get any permanent burn in (like mine, a 50" 2010 model). Whilr all oleds WILL innevitably deteriorate with time. Theres no avoiding it, just delaying. The best you can hope for is that it deteriorates evenly so its not too distracting.

That sucks. Why didnt the C7 auto dim? Or did it? Mine auto dims when a static image is on screen for a while. I would think it would do that with any image source coming onto the tv. I was loving the tv and used it HEAVILY for old and new games only. Not movies or tv. Alot of static images and it performed great. Though it always had these faint vertical bands that could be seen in darker scenes. I forgave this as I read this is part of the tech and cant really get an OLED without some vertical bands. HOWEVER. The bands became stronger recently and I could see them during regular brighter content. So now Ive been waiting for my replacement panel from best buy. Hopefully the next one doesnt have strong bands and hopefully they do no get worse over time as did my previous set. Luckily I have the 5 year protection plan from best buy so it would just mean more hassle for me , but I should be covered. I do not really want to have to replace OLEDs yearly, but I probably would since Im a maniac when it comes to picture quality. Not that I would be buying them again and again but using my protection plan and renewing it as needed to keep the coverage alive. Pain in the fucking ass either way. The low input lag is amazing (I tested it on games like Mike Tysons Punchout for the NES), and most everything about the set was amazing so far. So I hope this wont be an ongoing issue.

20 hours is nothing. People often misunderstand the "burn in" problem with OLED. Temporary image retention is not what you should be concerned about, although it is annoying. Burn in on the other hand is a CUMULATIVE effect of pixel aging and losing their brightness. If you watch a lot of movies with black bars, pixels in the middle will lose their brightness but those at the top and bottom will not. For all the advantages it has over LCD, just not worth it, at least not right now.

I unplug my c6 at the wall every night, But i leave it powered until i hear the click telling me the auto screen re fresh is complete, Static images are a problem with LG oled's when ever i leave the room and the tv is paused i just put it on standby, I have seen image retention on a static image after around 1 hour, So long as the image changes it has been ok, It is my gaming tv and i have played 12 hours plus in 1 sitting, no issues, Even Fortnight didn't leave retention as even the map moves enough not to be static, just be aware and constantly avoid static images, like watching streamers with logos and you tubers facecams, So long as you set the games hud's to disappear and constantly remind yourself will this image damage my tv ?.

What I wonder, if I don't touch the remote control of the TV for many hours, it starts displaying warnings that it will go to standby in a few minutes and then I need to grab the remote control. This often happens if I use my satellite receiver, which has its own remote, so the TV doesn't know I am still watching. As far as I can see on my own C7, this functionality is enabked by default. do tv manufacturers cover burn ins under warranty?
@danielmantione
@danielmantione 6 жыл бұрын
In principle not, because with normal TV use, you should not see burn-in until after several thousand hours of operation. This is normal aging and normal aging of a product is not covered by warranty. However, if it would happen much sooner, it is a defective TV and you could claim warranty. Image retention like shown in this video is not burn-in and goes away quickly. There is no need to worry about that.
