3/10 at best, part 2 was even worse and Lenny Henry wasn't even funny back in the 80s, I just think that compared to today's 'talent' he seems that way. Maybe you had to be there to remember how bad he was compared to his contemporaries. I miss Blackadder and Not the 9 O'clock News, never his mainstream dross. Dr What gets a point for this being a Master episode, the bad guys being okish (in this episode) and it starts with 1 point as default.

Chibs sucks at sci-fi and he just can't write the doctor. Hella humans have died from last season to now. She didn't even care lol. The thing that was completely "not the doctor". Was when the officer told jodie to go back in the house, and she did! With no protest or anything lol like WTF? Then she just goes back in the house and watches the monitor with everyone else. HUH? No ingenius plan making or nothing, just asked everyone for their input like she isn't the doctor. Then she just sits there and watches them get killed, on her watch/care. She slowly walks outside and just makes a comment on how terrible they died lol. Scene switched to inside the house and she's just having a normal talk with the alien/murderer. It was bad! Don't get me started on chibs ignoring the Tardis and basically making it a prop/joke.

Still dont understand how the Master came back. Which Master is he? Post-Missy? Because if it is, that would totally invalidate her redemption arc. Almost definitely pre-Missy, possibly even pre-Simms. Don't think Chibnall has the imagination to come up with a workable method for The Master to renew his regeneration cycle for a second time. Plus as we've only ever seen 9 of the at least 18 Masters on screen it kind of makes more sense than Missy somehow regenerating.

he said in part 2 that he felt betrayed by the fact that the very existence of time lord society, his entire life, was built on a lie. He threw all of his redemption out of the window because he wanted to get revenge on all the people who ever lied right to his face. It's understandable, i mean, he may have tried to be a good person, but the master is still the master, if something angers him that much, if he learns something that is such a stinging slap in the face, he's not going to hold back anymore.

@Yana: I'm not sure I'd call the previous seasons a colossal turd as you did. I would, however, agree that it wasn't as annoying as the previous season. While Moffatt certainly had his ups and downs on episodes, the one thing he was definitely brilliant on was dialog - which clearly Chibnal is not. I see the potential of a new Doctor as being amazing. I see the execution as worthy of arranging one (similar to Queen Elizabeth's sentiment on arrangement of same). If we had someone in the writing room using their ideas (which, to be fair, are more unique) with Moffatt's dialog prowess, we would certainly have been immensely better off than we are now. I can't say I'm excited about this new staff and there's only so much Jodie and her 'fam' (which, by the way, is also annoying and campy) can do to unfornicate the situation.

Yeah. I tend to agree. Whilst Season 11 had moments (e.g. Rosa and the Witchfinder aside from the last 5 minutes), the show was operating on a 3/10. Not good enough to rewatch fully but not bad enough to be car crash media. Honestly, Chibnall reminds me of the character of Violet Evergarden in terms of writing. In her first letters, she wrote love letters like field reports, being very literal. You can also add in the Sugar writing method where you add rather dark subject matters (e.g. a guy leaving his blind child afraid and starving so he can bang what he thinks is her resurrected mother) without factoring it into the final conclusion. Honestly, just have Yaz punch him and threaten to sick CPS on him when she thinks the Doctor is out of earshot.

Found plenty of clues on the master, and Sachas subtle perfomance really have a lot nuances that had me second guessing if he could be trusted (knowing so much about the doctor, the "ridiculous" comment at the tardis, him subtly hinting that faking a whole identity like barton would very difficult even though he did the same as Harold Saxon, Stephen fry saying "oh" before he's shot), given the story and the theme of the series is trust and lies it wasn't all that surprising he'd be the master, even Fry's comment about "maybe a double agent, even triple" hinting not only at his O persona but that he was gonna end up being the master, a third identity.

Honestly I quite liked this one. I also liked this kind of master reveal being so sudden, it caught me off guard completely. I agree there are some dumb scenes however, but I'd say there is more good than bad. The bad parts for me were: The intro killing of spies (although at least it was showing, not telling ;) ), the killing car and the bike chase, plus there's the show-don't-tell part with the DNA, which would definitely be better. While these were pretty dire, I still thought that most of the episode was good. I especially liked the monsters, or Kasavin or whatever they're called. I liked their white light form as well, I don't think it was any worse. Whoever came up with the design (albeit quite a simple one) did a good job in my opinion. I'm also going to mention the Master. Lots of people are saying that if this master is after Missy it wouldn't make any sense. But SPOILER ALERT I think it makes a lot more sense given the uncontrollable rage the master had over Gallifrey's secret. A discovery like this would surely at least taint the master, or at least this regeneration. And in Part 2 this master is noticeably more angry than previous incarnations. It's cool to see the master slightly differently once again. BUT regardless, I still think it would be better if this master came before Missy ;)

I also don’t like how the doctor again does everything important in the episode. Like Yaz’s invites to the party didn’t matter because the doctor can just “hack” the guest list. Also the confrontation of Lenny Henry’s character by the doctor would have been MUCH more impactful if Yaz had been the one to confront him. Actually making the interview between the two meaningful and would have brought the confrontation by Yaz full circle.

We share very similar taste in both Doctor Who and Bond, as Casino Royale is my favourite too. There's A LOT of reused stuff in these episodes. Killer satnavs, people's DNA being wiped, the way the creatures appear (like the ghosts in Army of Ghosts, although they were travelling between universes in the same way the Cybermen were, so that's forgivable), people going off the grid to hide from The Master as he's made them public enemy number one. Loads of stuff. The new Master was good though, and there was good acting from Jodie and Lenny. I'm getting a bit tired of Bradley Walsh though, but I don't dislike him. I HAVE WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS. The whole two parter is a copy of other past good stories with the same plot point and even reveals. The monsters in this is a copy from the monsters in Flatline the Master reveal is exactly the same as is the cliffhanger from Dark water and death in heaven especially with O and Missy showing a infatuation with the Doctor é.g. Kissing him and saying her heart is maintained by the Doctor and O saying he has files and files worth of stuff on the Doctor. Even the separating the doctor and putting the companions into a sure death situation only for them to stupidly survive in the next episode. The monsters are also a copy of the ghost cybermen, plus the whole plot is stupid as if Barton does turn humanity into storage devices(stupid) what is he going to do next there will be no one to sell it to. The only positive is that the show looks bright and is faced paced which really makes you zone out and not fully process the stupidity throughout the episode until the end like the fact that they drove instead of using the time and space machine that can go anywhere in an instant which would have nullified that whole car mess

Why is it that when anything interesting begins to develop it is robbed of agency, Yaz and Ryan for example are invited to a party but the Doctor isn’t, she could’ve taken a step back used some alien tech and directed them from a distance and had a chance to further develop them and us as watchers could’ve got a chance to see how they handle themselves in this environment.

The chase part was terrible. They've left the Tardis behind even though it'd be far faster and safer to chase him by flying up in the sky. The Doctor for some reason didn't use her iconic vehicle but decided to steal some random people's bikes that must've had the keys in the ignition already. So then, not only could any of the companions die at any second when being shot at, yet don't think "Fuck this!" and let him get away, it also means the Doctor is leading her companions into a hail of bullets for no real reason. Then they get onto his plane. So if this plane ends up in a different country, they're now stuck overseas without the Tardis and will have to spend hundreds of pounds to get back to the Tardis. Of course, if they HAD used the Tardis to chase Lenny Henry, they could have then used it to teleport inside the plane and then when the bomb went off, they could just safely teleport out again in the Tardis. So basically, the whole plan of the Master was contingent on the Doctor stupidly not using her cherished vehicle for some reason.

Have you noticed the doctor can’t seem to do anything wrong anymore? When was the last time the doctor and companions clashed? I’ve only watched since new who, but i miss the gritty tone in episodes like Dalek, the waters of mars, midnight, the fires of Pompeii, and a load more.

I completely disagree, I think the humor was brilliantly timed and genuinely funny, I though all of the companions and the doctor were at their best this episode and the master reveal was brilliant also. I genuinely can't think of thing I didn't like, I was constantly on the edge of my seat and was so excited for the next episode. I give Spyfall part 1 a 10/10

THANK YOU!! I have been watching doctor who for years and this was pretty much perfect for me. The master reveal completely caught me off guard and I dont think it was forced, just pleasantly surprising, and I really liked the childish master parts, because it shows a kind of maniac side to him which he would be after all those times he has been defeated, and he then shows the monstrous side to himself and I loved the change of personality, also it would make no difference if Yaz or Luke or Graham tried to arrest or stop the master in any way because what use would it be on a moving plane!? The humour was also a lot better (Graham and his old shoe shuffle) and it has been the first time In ages that something actually life threatening has happened to the gang. Love it. 9.5/10

I think what frustrated me most about this episode is that only now do we have the companions begin to question who The Doctor is as well as some more mentions of the "Timeless Child" stinger we got in The Woman Who Fell to Earth. You could pretty much skip all but the first and last episodes of series 11, go straight into Spyfall and miss absolutely nothing, no one gets any meaningful development, nothing relevant plot-wise happens. I really don't have high hopes for season 12, especially if Spyfall is anything to go off of.

Great review Harry but am I the only person that had a serious issue with the editing and cinematography of this episode? I’m no expert but for me it just felt so fast paced and I feel the shots failed to give much new information. The camera work was mostly hand held which made me feel a bit ill at times. As a result it was difficult for me to comprehend what was actually going on. Especially in that ATMOS ripoff scene.

carealoo744 , meh. I still think Spyfall was a solid opener, Night of Terror wasn’t bad but I think we peaked with Fugitive of The Judoon. However, the other two (don’t even want to say their names) have taken away massively from my overall enjoyment of the series and I’m officially very worried for how this is all gonna end, and when it probably ends badly, I won’t even be able to enjoy Spyfall or Fugitive because they set up a disaster. Granted, they are trying, which is more than you can say for series 11 which is just so bland it’s painful, but that’s not enough and although this has been an improvement in my opinion, they still have a VERY long way to go. Still excited to see what they do though, even if does turn out be hot hot trash🤷♂️.

3:45 This is what happens when you overthink jokes. 5:05 How so? Apple, alphabet etc are more powerful than most nations. It really isn't hard to believe. Edit: I want to make it clear that I'm not hating on this video. The reason I only mentioned these two points he made is because they're the only ones I have a problem with.
@xPanda255 жыл бұрын
For the latter point, it's because he (rightfully) is annoyed by the "tell not show" strategy the show is using. Instead of showing us how Vor is more powerful than nations, instead of showing us that the one Spy's DNA is no longer reading as human, it's all just told to us. We have to just take whomever's word for it rather than us being able to see it. In the past seasons of Doctor Who we have been able to determine these things for ourselves regardless of if someone tells us or not
@christopherbennett58585 жыл бұрын
@@xPanda25 I know, right? Honestly, showing is usually a bit more effective. Have someone poke the agent and have the finger go through the skin like it was gelatin or something or tap the arm and it sounds hollow.

And even if he didn't blatantly spell it out for you, he assumes his audience is smart enough to figure out what his point is, though im very certain he blatantly said it
@ohauss5 жыл бұрын
I think there were way more clues that O isn't who he appears to be than you let on, though some were subtle. First of all, for some kind of side character, he was shown way too frequently, latching onto the team. His reaction to the offer to be shown inside the TARDIS goes way beyond "disgraced alien expert" - as does his equipment (Remember, the TARDIS couldn't keep the Kasaavin out). When they leave the TARDIS to go to the party, he is the one to leave last, to close the door and stays at the rear - "I control everything!". Has nothing to do with his running ability, but with his making sure the team is running headlong into his trap and he gets to watch them do it.

What's so funny about 'vor' ? I just googled it and apparently it's 'VHF omnidirectional range', 'voice-on recording' and 'vestibulo-ocular reflex'.... huh?
@TrovaoSmasher5 жыл бұрын
One thing that bothered me also, VOR came out of nowhere from what I remember. A giant corporation, stronger than most countries, never mentioned before. I would've been fine with it being some timey-wimey stuff that the doctor caused on accident in one of her adventures (even though the gang knowing about it would've been a plothole) but not even that's alluded to. It just always existed, never mentioned. It takes me back to things like Bad Wolf, that had pieces dropped in a lot of episodes before the payoff. This would've been 10x better and less cheap if it had any foreshadowing whatsoever
@christopherbennett58585 жыл бұрын
Now, there is a good point there. In New Who, businesses are either local, time based or generic and, if they're involved in the story, they're either highlighted as being rushed in implementation (e.g. Slitheen Woman covering up the faults of her Power station, the Archangel Network, floors in buildings being missing in the Lodger) or they're in industries that are not at the forefront of global society (e.g. ATMOS as environmentally friendly emissions converters, a fizzy drink company in Sarah Jane adventures etc). This one is pretty big and we're told people have VOR across the globe as consumers.... lol. Then again, backstory, or lore, is more of a "Need to know basis" sort of thing. Unless you need to know it, you don't need to say it.
