I also remember being optimistic thinking Chibnall was holding back in order to simplify things after Moffat, Minimalism. Instead, it turned out to be simplistic, the facade of restraint, meaning they couldn't write or direct beyond this lowered standard, and by the middle of S11, we knew what a disaster it had become.

@@kylemccrory2031 It's just a personal opinion though it is shared by MANY people. I've been watching Doctor Who for fifteen years out of my seventeen years and this is such a stark contrast from what made NuWho 'good'. There's no Christmas Special, the companions are more two-dimensional than ever and the Master is just appaling in my opinion. He has some good acting bits but he completely removes all the character development that happened during the Missy arc. Both Doctor and Master completely ignore it even happened. I also believe that the Doctor SHOULD NOT have been the Timeless Child - I was expecting the whole time for the Master to be the Timeless Child, which would have redeemed Chibnall somewhat in my eyes, but I won't get into that - the whole point of the Doctor is they're just another Time Lord, they're 'special' because of their actions throughout time and space, saving entire galaxies. The Doctor being some sort of mythos being that was always destined to be strong and special completely ruined what for nearly SIXTY YEARS made the Doctor... well, the Doctor. And that's why I don't like Seasom 12

@@lilianderson8256 Does it make sense to have the Doctor become a woman after nearly 50 years? No! If the show took this long to do so, then why bother? In my Doctor Who, I reveal that the Doctor has a regeneration-limiting disease, maybe...
@chao807
@chao807 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly I felt that the story was lackluster and most of the plot points were obvious before they happened. Then there were other issues, such as : The monster ( a blue guy that sticks teeth in his face) that came to earth to kill one random guy, that the doctor just HAPPENED to land by from falling from space. It feels too cheap since the train with the Prey just happened to stop right in the way of the Doctors fall trajectory and have her land in the exact same ROOM as him. I was also not a fan of how the Doctor completely ignored their new appearance since its normally the first thing they focus on. It just felt like they didn't do that just to try and avoid any more "He's a She!" Controversy. Then there is minor things like how she could "rewrite" a phone in seconds as if she is now a god, the doctor is smart but she can't rewrite a phones programming by pressing 5 buttons. I wasn't sure about how she made the Sonic either, I don't know if they always make one or if it changes with the regeneration, but regardless it should take more than a solder and a sledgehammer to build one. I was also confused with the Aliens attack, he claims that his skin is what he uses to kill people since he is so cold, yet his hand glows like a light when he uses it which makes no sense. That has to be a weapon, but they say it isn't. It just makes no sense and feels like costume and writing departments didn't talk to each other while they were making it. Then there is also Jodie's performance. I'm not going to scream about it being a girl, but I was hoping for more than a reinterpretation of Matt Smith and David Tennant. Again, it just feels cheap and it doesn't do Jodie justice since she's the first female and a bad character is not something the show can cope with right now. I'm not dissing on the show because I can, I am just voicing my issues with the show. If anyone has different opinions they are welcome to them.

@Haku infinite I think they definitely tried to make her appear perfect. Assuming what you said was true (as I don't know everything about DW, just appreciate the show) they seem to have retconned the Sonic then; Unless the one she made in ep1 was supposed to be a shoddy construction to make do until she gets a proper one, that is. I don't have an issue with her being a Woman all of a sudden, but to make her perfect when her predecessors -or at least her recent ones- were in no way anything of the sort. Things like the phone issue I mentioned in my OP also make no sense and suddenly Doctor is god with machines just so they can advance the story and make her look cool :/

@Skeptic Psychologist: 1. Remember how in 'The Christmas Invasion', the post-regeneration Tenth Doctor still had enough regeneration energy left to regenerate a lost hand? Time Lords have an accelerated healing factor for a day or two after they regenerate. She won't be indestructible as an ongoing thing. 2. That the hunting plot making no sense was kind of the point. It was a stupid archaic ritual that 'Tim Shaw's people engaged in that was obviously no real challenge (especially when you cheat). Personally, I would've liked to have seen the hollow hypocrisy of the 'test of worthiness' emphasised more in the episode itself but time constraints, I guess... 3. For all we know, the glowing square thing was the universal symbol for "I agree to an individual being hunted on my planet". It was effectively a sort of alien EULA. Tim's people were presumably more interested in fulfilling tradition (and perhaps covering their butts legally) than in obtaining genuine consent. Would've been nice if the show found time to explain it, but the gist was pretty clear, IMO. P.S. I assume "5000 galaxies" was deliberate. The TARDIS can quickly travel between any two points in the universe, and there are 100 billion galaxies in the universe. The Daleks seem capable of similar. Less advanced species doing a comparatively short hop of 5,000 galaxies seems very plausible within the show's canon.

I was so happy about the "twist" that Ryan wasn't talking about the Doctor. With Moffat's Doctor he was always the central character, the Most Important Man In the Universe and the writers made sure it's being monologued by a character at least every two episodes. I love the humble bystander who stumbles onto problems and then helps out the people involved. I hope this is an indicator of how the show is going to treat the Doctor this time around.

I agree to a point. Acting is not so bad- and I do miss ordinary people. I also understand how Moffat went a tad overboard on the personas of the characters- so I'll compare them to RTD. When thinking about it- nobody had anything entertaining about them- Rose was boring IMO but I think some fans liked the chemistry between her and the doctor- Martha had a good amount of intellect- and Donna was just hillarious. As for the implementation of key bits to have a good influence of the younger years- I support that. What I am upset with was how they did it. It was just so dead obvious- 'knives are for idiots', eat your salad (please be unintentional), and the dispraxia was so obviously there for disability acceptance.

Honestly I really didn't enjoy this one too much. I loved the cinematography and Jodie Whittaker's depiction of the doctor, but that was about it. The social media thing was pretty pointless, and the whole amnesia thing the doctor went through was also ultimately pointless. I enjoyed the alien's design up until it's helmet came off. Then it was just stupidly silly. And his motive was just garbage too. This advanced warrior alien species have to go and hunt a defenceless human they can kill with a touch to achieve a higher status? That's ridiculous. How much more interesting would it have been if the doctor defeated the alien by convincing him to go hunt more challenging prey like weeping angels? Also as someone who has known people with Dyspraxia, they would not have been able to climb a crane ladder safely if they could not even ride a bike; so I guess that disability gets turned on and off whenever they feel like it. The episode did have some funny (Kebab guy) moments and I found the funeral scene at the end to be genuinely touching, it just didn't feel right to me for a lot of reasons. Things seemed to happen just because the plot called for it and the ending was as predictable a fakeout as they come. That's my opinion anyway, feel free to comment and share your own because I'd love to have my mind changed.

While I can see the rest of your criticisms, amnesia has been a symptom of regeneration sickness for quite some time, I'd argue 13's regeneration sickness is average compared to 10 or 12's, and 13's mania is too terribly off when you remember how 11 acted post-regeneration, and her regen sickness is quite mild when you compare it to 5 or 8's regeneration sicknesses. so the amnesia wasn't a plot element there to waste time, it's a reference to her regeneration.
@09lawso
@09lawso 6 жыл бұрын
@@samconrad6053 I understand it's been a symptom for a while now, but in the past it's actually tied into the plot and lead some really great moments. With 11 we have the fantastic sequence where he confronts the Atraxi on the roof and explains who he is, scaring them off. With 12 we have the sequence of him recognising his face and why he chose it as well as Clara's struggle to accept who he is since he seems so different. With 13 it doesn't affect anything, she still knows all about the aliens and technology, even building a new Sonic with ease. When she does finally remember it's not an impressive moment at all, it's just "Oh you know what? Just remembered I'm the doctor" and while that's definitely a way to handle it, it could have been so much more.

Olipie as a person with dyspraxia who can’t ride a bike (I can do fine until I try to break then lose control), I’m sure I could climb a crane ladder, the difference is I wouldn’t want to unless absolutely necessary (he didn’t, sending the step granddad up or the gran would have been more effective, as the girl had to keep an eye on him and he would have been higher risk up there). Once you have got to an age like him being 19 (I’m 18) you tend to know what you can do and what you can’t. And people have complained about her making a Sonic without the TARDIS, but she had Tim Shaw's alien technology at hand. And Sheffield steel. And there seemed to be a bit of trial and error. And the Sonic sparked anyway. "Should be fine." In other words, most complaints I see seem like a stretch.

I felt the pacing was way to fast, it was jumping from scene to scene as if to say 'That's done on to the next!' I thought it was really good when the pacing was a bit slower, like when the train segment was going on, or when Rahul retrieved the capsule. I also thought that the acting was a bit wooden over all. Not a bad episode, but pretty bog-standard overall.
@keerya4179

I think it's because it was overall very predictable, which made it boring. There was some good sequences but it was in between not so good one. For exemple I missed a part of the dialogue at the start because I was stuck wondering "are they really stupid enought to take someone who don't know how to ride a bike on an uneven ground, I wouldn't ride on such ground and I already know how to ride a bike ! Are they stupid ?! What the heck am I watching right now ?" There was death flag rising here and there, giving away who was gonna die. I knew Who was gonna live or die because of that and it made every death scene uninteresting. The death of Grace who was unrealistic and so cheesy it was embarassing, you could see how she only died to make the plot move foward. Her death lack organic writting. And so on.

...I honestly thought it was pretty horrible. I mean when you can easily predict what is going to happen next during and entire episode there isn't much point watching it... Aside from looking pretty, At least they did that. But good scenery and sets and alike don't make up for the fact that it felt like watching a bad american spin-off or something. But can you honestly say that you didn't see any of it coming? Even the grandmother dying etc it was just... low effort.

Rose Tico Was all that hostility necessary? All I did was express my opinion on something and you're trying to personally attack and make assumptions about me? Please have some dignity and act your age mam. Regardless "Adult level complexity" is not what I am talking about. I'm talking about keeping the same quality of writing they have had since season 1. Ignoring the fact that their target audience is not children (even they have never made such a ridiculous claim) it's not unreasonable to want the same level of quality even if they had changed the target audience. Besides... Many television shows and films with children as the target audience have good writing, Shrek being an easy example. The very fact that you think children (particularly 9 year olds) are not smart enough to get bored with predictability is quite concerning. I hope you don't have children, Because every developmental psychologist will tell you that is not only incorrect but a terrible way to raise a child.

Lived in Sheffield for a decade. It's the most corrupt city I have ever been to which, periodically, explodes in events like Hillsborough and Rotherham. Seeing how business is conducted by the council, social services, the courts and the police on a day-to-day basis would lead anyone to despair. Locals say it is a beautiful city because it has a few new district and parks but, considering the stunning beauty of the peak district around it, you can just imagine how nice this area was before they tore it up and paved over it. 70% of the city looks borderline abandoned and most people and families live in a state of poverty. It has a fantastic location on the M1 corridor between prosperous Nottingham and Leeds, with Manchester another neighbour, but the city has an increadibly fragile economy and has failed to diversify so it is little more than a university town sourrounded by towns like Doncaster and Rtherham which grow rich on MOD research and engineering paychecks. The wages are abysmal for all except those at the top who only get there by stepping over other. There is no social mobility and most of the locals live and die in areas like the Manor or Gleadless never once knowing a decnt job or paycheck. Prinipally, events got this bad because most people in Sheffield are completely delusional about the city and adopt and "I'm alright, Jack!" and "Don't you dare say anything bad about Shef!" attitude which allows corruption to thrive and business to wither while preventing real action from happening.

When she found out she had the part, she called up Tenant (who she knew from Broadchurch) and started to ask a lot of questions on how to portray the Doctor. Also, while they have different bodies once regenerated, they are still the same person, and so would have similarities to past incarnations. Furthermore, she's (Whittaker) has just taken up the mantle, and going in a complete new direction would upset fans more

To be honest, I thought she looked way better in Capaldi's old outfit. Also, how did the Doctor actually survive the fall to Earth?? When the 11th Doctor fell he had to spend hours recovering in a suit specially designed to minimise damage. As far as "first episodes" go, in regards to a new Doctor, it was OK. It was par for the course. It was better than Rose or Deep Breath, not as good as The Eleventh Hour (results may vary from person to person). There's always that period of adjustment where you get used to a new face. That period where it seems like a LOT of people hate the new person in the role, it takes a few weeks, but it dies down. It seems like many people are forgetting it takes an actor a little while to make the character their own. And it takes us just as long to see them in that role as THE Doctor.

It doesn't seem like _anyone_ is talking about it, but I thought it was really weird when the Doctor chastised the crane dude for kicking Tim Shaw off the crane, right after he detonated 5 DNA bombs inside him. Like, he was already dead, right? That's 5 times more dna bombs in him than in everyone else who had one inside them, and he already had the teleport control? In the Doctor's version, he teleports home, and then melts and dies, but on the 'real' version, he falls, then teleports home, then melts and dies? Maybe I looked at it wrong, but I thought it was really weird and no one is talking about it. And then it just cuts away!
@lwaves
@lwaves 6 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying but it wasn't about the end result - the alien's eventual death. It was about Carl (an innocent at this point) having an involvement in that. For example, take a bad, evil person being kicked and punched to death in the street by people. They are going to die whatever you do. If you join in and kick them a couple of times, you are partly responsible for their death. If you don't join in you are not responsible and remain innocent of any wrongdoing. It's also possible that in his fear and confusion that Carl wouldn't realise what exactly was happening with the DNA bombs and the teleport, so he could be thinking that kick and fall would be the killing blow.

1. Apparently, though I don't think this was ever made clear enough, the series 5 finale wiped out all previous alien invasions, and as far as I can tell, the only alien invasion that happened since then was Missy's cyber-invasion, which wasn't obviously alien, since the cybermen came from St. Paul's and graveyards. UNIT dealt with all the zygon stuff, so no one would know about that, since all that was revealed to the public was one phone video which could easily be brushed off as a hoax. 2. They thought it was a hoax. 3. The Second Doctor built the first sonic screwdriver, so it is absolutely conceivable that they could do it again. Although the timeframe they gave was pretty ridiculous.

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was mostly... meh, throughout. And Jodi just didn't convince for me, at all; trying too hard, maybe. Reminded me of McCoy's first episodes. Hope I warm to her, but McCoy made me quit last time. The Doctor's costume looks weird... because it is exactly that, a 'costume'. It in no way looks natural or casually put together. It's designed.

I really enjoyed this video, idk if it was the tone or the way you described some of creatures and places like "That weird scribble creature from the David Tennant episode, 'Fear Her'." "I'm also not suprised that I'm having this reaction considering she got those clothes from a *BLOODY CHARITY SHOP* " "Special shoutout to ma boy Dennis and his iPad!"

It's understandable as most of the episode she was in a post-regen state. During that time they have all been a bit wibbly wobbly and often take on aspects of their previous incarnations. You say Smith, I've seen others say Tennant, others say Tom Baker and so on. To me that just says she's the Doctor. :-)

After the few depressing seasons behind, this episode was very uplifting. It felt like just a regular episode. Nothing better and nothing worse.

The "I carry my family around with me" is a reference to the 2nd Doctor story The Tomb of the Cybermen. The Doctor's monologue there was all about how, as it's been so long since he's seen his family, they sleep in his head, carrying them around with him, waking up when he needs them to. Figuratively of course

Love your vids, Harry. You're an excellent reviewer and I've enjoyed sitting down to your DW playlists. But I think you're giving this episode way too much credit. It was riddled with plot holes; like Tim Shaw not attempting to kill them on the rooftop when he first meets them; the Doctor making her own sonic screwdriver when it's supposed to be the same screwdriver as before with a new coat of paint; and the Doctor's hypocrisy of tricking Tim Shaw into possible suicide only to chastise the crane operator for pushing him off the edge when he had a teleport. Also, the new Doctor was written exactly the same way that Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi's was - overly childish and goofy. I agree with you that some of the visuals were beautiful; Tim Shaw's look was pretty cool and it was nice to have a British setting somewhere other than London or Cardiff, but for a demonstration of the type of writer Chibnall will be, it was pretty underwhelming.

I watched my first Dr. Who for first time and found it charming. However the second episode I left the room and thought it was very boring. Oh by the way my first Dr. was the second. B.P. Before Pertwee.

It's a bit early to rate the entire season. That would be like rating Season 2 on "The Christmas Invasion", and this ep was a *lot* better than the Christmas Invasion. Tennant was amazing of course, but that was really not a good story...

It was as dull and derivative in so many ways. The KZbin diary, even if not overused in Doctor Who still felt like a stale cliche for a narrative framing device. It was obvious in the following scene that Ryan was talking about his gran. I’m genuinely shocked - no offence - that anyone could regard this as a twist, when Ryan actually confirms this to be the case at the end after gran dies.

I agree with most of what you said but Whitaker didn't land for me. She felt like a cheap imitation of Matt Smith and it felt massively overacted. Also Tenant said almost exactly the same thing about the teleport in the daleks in Manhattan story.

She was in the process of regeneration still, at that point she doesn't know who she'll be so aspects of previous Doctors rise to the top, she's also said she's playing the Doctor with a childish curiosity where Matt Smith played more of an over the top excitable character.
@geminiferret4758
@geminiferret4758 6 жыл бұрын
@@ErinTheFennec yeah... That's not what we've seen with other doctors. 10 took a while to work himself out but wasn't a mixture of other doctors up until that point. 11 had a set identifiable personality immediately and 12 was more or less the same - it just took him some time to work out why he 'chose' that personality. I don't deny that doctors can't take some time to identify themselves but they don't tend to act like the doctor until they do which 13 was immediately. This to me suggests either a complete disregard for canon (which Chibnal doesn't seem too worried about given the sonic) or that Whitaker wasn't confident in the character of her own doctor. Either way, I don't think her presentation was a positive first outing.

10 didn't really get a lot as he was absent from most of his first episode until he got his epic Doctor moment, 11 did get screen time, and honestly he went into one of the more awkward introductions in my opinion, a bit too weird straight off. 12, honestly I kinda could see a tiny bit of Smith in Capaldi's first performance, obviously it wasn't the primary aspect, and the grumpier side of Capaldi's first series was played up, but 12 was also a bit crazy at times. What I said was to do with the explanation given in the episode, and honestly, I agree it wasn't the best in that regard, but the idea is that 13 is a childishly curious doctor, not a excitable Doctor like Smith, we'll see how we grow, especially as Chibnall despite his flaws is at least seemingly good at writing characters for the most part.

Just to double-down on your comment about Grace's death, not only did I predict she was going to die, as soon as I did, I said, "He's not talking about the Doctor, despite initial appearances. He's talking about his nan." That's when I knew that some way, some how, Grace was going to die at that construction site. Especially since she was saying how much fun she was having, the only one of the 4 "companions" to really express that feeling.
