Letby was also in a relationship with a married doctor, I assume from the same unit, who warned her she was being investigated. How much weight and credibility was given to that person, a senior colleague, protecting Letby. And Letby also ingratiated herself with a senior nurse, part of the executive board, going out for coffee whilst under suspension and this person has now also left the hospital Trust. Letby was clever and manipulative, the Trust was prepared to put her forward for a Master’s degree. It wasn’t the colour of her skin, but rather her ability to mask and have colleagues believe in “nice Lucy” (a term used by a consultant paediatrician when Letby was under suspicion).

Whether people accept it or not. If an ethnic minority nurse had been involved the complaints would have been listened to. Ethnic minority nurses are more likely to be disciplined; suspended; referred to the NMC or sacked than white nurses. It's a known fact. Ironically issues doesn't affect the promotion of the indigenous nurse like it would the black nurse. As an exnurse I should know as I've been in that situation.

If an ethnic minority nurse had been involved and she had shown the same characteristics as Letby, the complaints wouldn't have been listened to. Colleagues were in disbelief that Letby could be guilty because she was hard-working, well-liked, competent, enthusiastic and keen to learn. It's difficult for people to square that perception with Letby's cunning, manipulativeness and capacity to keep up the facade that she did.

There is absolutely a pretty apparent difference in how Letby has been portrayed in the media as opposed to say, how Rose West or Beverley Allett, was portrayed.. I don't recall in either of those cases, the media going round publishing photos of either of their "innocent childhoods" or the hand-wringing about coming from a "good family", and the likes, they were both pretty much portrayed as the monsters they were right off the bat But, of course, Letby fits more into the aspirational Middle Class archetype that the likes of The Mail and The Express like to push as the ideal... So, maybe less a race thing, more a class thing....

Both points are not mutually exclusive. If we can believe the police were afraid to prosecute asian men who were grooming then why is it hard to believe the medical board were reluctant to sack or reprimand a white woman? Both points are valid. The problem is that potentially there is a lack of duty to bring someone to justice because of their skin colour regardless of what side of the fence they sit on. That's the bigger issue.

Its hard to say if this was a racist problem but in my experience parents are not given a voice unless they push really hard. In 1983 my 10 year old son was diagnosed with a Burkitt's Lymphoma. A treatable tumour. During treatment he sustained a serious brain injury and I was never able to find out the truth. I have my suspicians. I was a 37 year old working class woman with nobody to back me up. I did get a solicitor to look at it but was told that notes were missing. My son is almost 50 now and I'm still coping with the fall out. He son lost his short term memory. He suffered frequent fits which caused him to spin round, jump, fall, then run. I never felt personally supported by anybody in the medical profession. I couldn't work for years so don't have a decent pension. My three year old son was badly affected. Luckily my 13 year old daughter was able to carry on with her life more normally. In today's world there is information out there but I am sure it is still difficult, particularly if you are working class and don't have the contacts, whatever your race.
