This video answers the questions: Can I discuss the Shane Dawson - Eugenia Cooney video about eating disorder support? Can somebody with an eating disorder truly not realize how thin they are? Are eating disorders a type of delusional disorders? Shane Dawson released a video about Eugenia Cooney in which she interviews her about her experiences during treatment for an eating disorder. Shane Dawson has help from Kati Morton, who advises him on how to approach the interview with sensitivity.

I think so too. For me, it was clear that she didn't trust him. He should have come couple times prior without camera, just friendly talk to open her up a little bit. His comments in the bathroom made me uncomfortable. I had a feeling he is there for the interview not for her. I understand that none of us were born with knowledge of this matter, so the spending more time to feel comfortable for both sides were necessary in my opinion.

Thank you so much for talking about this topic, Dr. Grande. I'm an anorexia nervosa survivor, so when I saw the title of this video, I knew I had to click on it right away. You are absolutely right when you say that anorexics don't necessarily think that they are fat or obese: I remember I used to focus on the shape of my legs and my hips every time I looked at myself in the mirror. I knew I was not fat. That was very clear to me. I could see that, especially when someone was next to me (when they stood next to me, they looked quite big), but I was never satisfied. I wanted to be thinner. I wanted my body to be extremely thin. Basically I wanted to die. I was raped when I was a child, and I couldn't get over that trauma. I was diagnosed with depression, and the only thing that made me feel "in control of my life" was anorexia nervosa. When things got worse, I tried to kill myself; I was only 21 years old at the time. The whole thing was a nightmare. I was too thin and too depressed. I really thought I would never get out of it. But now, seven years later, I'm a healthy woman. I'm a Spanish teacher with a Master's degree. I'm *alive*, which feels like a miracle. I've learned to love myself. It was a long process, and the treatment was quite expensive, but it was completely worth it. I think it's very important to talk about these disorders, and to have people realize that eating disorders and depression are as real as diabetes or cancer. Mental health disorders are difficult to treat and they can kill you, and most cannot beat them by themselves. I still don't know how I managed to survive given how ill I was. All I know is that I'm still here, and stronger than ever. Again, thank you for making this video. I just gave it a thumbs up. I wish I could do more than that. Your channel is great, and this video is one of my favorites. Keep up the great work! BTW, pardon my English; it's not my native language.

I'm worried about Eugenia saying "I HAD an eating disorder" and "I WAS going through an eating disorder". She's not recovered overnight, and it's scary that she's pretending it's all in the past. I hope she's really doing good. And I'm also concerned about her living with her mother. Her mother OPPOSED her going to the doctor and then to a recovery center. And she always told her she was completely fine and she had nothing to worry about. And the mother was in the house when Shane came, but left in a rush so as not to be seen in the video. Her friends say Eugenia never leaves the house without her mother watching her or their driver, who always waits outside. So... I don't know. What do you think about that, doctor Grande? Do you think it's healthy for a person with an eating disorder to live in that environment?

Have you ever read the book titled the best little girl in the world? At any rate, a “good” girl who isn’t comfortable being a mature grown up, a sexual person and other adult characteristics is like the anorexic archetype.
@angelabaird7135
@angelabaird7135 4 жыл бұрын
Tasmanian Devil makes sense what you’re saying about that archetype. But do you think someone like EC could be forced into remaining in the “good girl” zone due to her mother demanding she play that role. I’ve heard she is guilted into not “upsetting” her mother and brother. In the video there were locks on the doors and windows and EC didn’t appear to know how to operate things in her own house. She doesn’t drive herself anywhere, etc. Do you think her kinda co-dependent guilt led role in the family is forcing her to remain in this state? Or do you think she, herself displayed needy codependent tendencies and her mother is and was unequipped to discipline and push her to go outside her comfort zone? In her Draw My Life she seemed to indicate that her mother would spoil her and basically just do what EC wanted. Do you have a strong insight or opinion or do you think it’s a combo of all these factors. Based on Jacklyn glen and her friends it really seems that the mother has extremely controlling tendencies. It’s just weird that we don’t see that play out on camera in their interactions. The mom doesn’t seem bosy or like she’s running the show too much. Maybe it’s because it’s EC channel so she has to follow her lead??

Unfortunately given the severity of the subject, I end up questioning the overall intent of the video(Shane's), when a medical professional is not more fully incorporated into the conversation. It was a "pretty picture" but I question the substance. That girl seems so incredibly sweet I wish her the very best, but am more concerned with the far reaching, young, viewership of the video. It was, frankly, uninformative.
@satunbreeze
@satunbreeze 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree because of several reasons. Firstly, this was only the first video where she speaks about this issue, before this she was completely in denial and it may take her more time to be more open. She only just now started improving and its asking a lot to expect her to completely open up. Secondly, she doesn't owe the world or the audience anything, and while it is moral imo for her to tell everyone that what she was doing was unhealthy, she doesn't owe us details. And lastly, it was informative, it just may not have been all that helpful to people going through an eating disorder. In definitely not going to say it wont help them at all though, because Eugenia did offer some words of encouragement, and having so many people and Shane himself act extremely supportive helps a lot imo. Mostly though, I think a big part of the video was showing people how to interact with someone going through this. Katie especially gives a LOT of helpful advice where she mentions that you shouldnt comment on her appearance at all, try not to ask too invasive of questions, dont ask too frequently/too many, and remember that even though they have the disorder, it isn't their only feature and that theyre a person too, and they should be treated with respect. A majority of people watching do not have anorexia or bulimia, so it makes sense to cater towards these people, and maybe even change their minds about how to handle people with disorders like this, especially since so many people were so misguided before, and even still kinda are. So imo, Shane did exactly what he needed to, and now we have created a dialogue about this, coming from KZbin's sweetheart.
@The.Cult.Of.Vintage

@@satunbreeze I appreciate what you're saying. However, I don't view it through the lens of "Shane's a great guy". Given the further information on the "how" Euginna begain her journey, and the information of Katie knowing beforehand, and still providing "advice", it does make me question the intent of the video. I am viewing it critically, which is my main problem with the video as a whole. It is Euginna's story to tell, but the narrative is in, IMO, question. It is great that she ended up in treatment, but given the severity of it, a 1 hour video and a guest appearance on her channel is just painting a picture. It is not the reality. Shane has a massive young viewership and without seeking the appropriate medical knowledge the video does, in fact, gloss over many important and potentially harmful, if not deadly, effects of eatting disorders. The severity of this issues warrants more than a "feel good" video.

Once I received nutrition, over a long period of 9 months, it was only then my brain healed enough for me to see clearly. This "documentary" I fear may do more harm than good to young sufferers. I feel that while Shane Dawson obviously really _meant_ well - this video was done too soon. I was dismayed by the fact that the whole narrative that Eugenia (or anyone else for that matter) could possibly be "recovered" from an ED after fewer than 6 months was never challenged, although of course it's good to see that she, or her handlers, were willing to establish "boundaries". I appreciate that at least he made the effort to portray her as a multifaceted human being, because she has had individuals on the Internet attempt to reduce her to nothing more than her putative diagnosis, which I have to admit is something which really bothered me. That said: I'm all too aware of the morbidities & mortality rate involved with an ED and how refractory it is to treatment. I really hope that Eugenia continues to work on her recovery because it seemed to me that she was keen to portray it as something she'd "put in the past" which, realistically, is probably a fairly dangerous way for her to approach things. I'd like to be told if I'm wrong about this.

Thank you also for taking on the topic of eating disorders. As you underline, they are deadly. A very close friend of mine died from a battle with anorexia for over 20 years. She had completely isolated herself, and was found dead in her apartment. You mentioned how to support someone with an eating disorder- my friend had lived off and on with me and my family throughout high school, college, and after college. When she was staying with me and I was studying overseas, I was so concerned that she wouldn't have someone to watch out for her and worried that she might die when I was away. I recall going to the student health center and asking what I could do as a friend. I distinctly remember them turning it around on me, and feeling like "what's wrong with you that you're so concerned with her". I came away feeling defeated, and I think to this day still harbor some guilt and shame for not having done something. I'm also angry that my genuine appeal for help was completely dismissed by the mental health community at the time.

Before I had my autism diagnosis both myself and others dismissed my deep concerns over the extent of undiagnosed mental illnesses in my friends, family. My desire to alleviate the suffering of those around me was flipped back to me as a "compulsion", as if educating myself and applying the knowledge and my own personal experience with mental illness was a ritual constructed to temporarily reduce anxiety😕😕. @@BagelBagelBagel I can relate to everything that you mention. Having grown up with a parent, sibling, and then a spouse with a Cluster B personality disorder, I was so CPTSD'd, depressed, scared, confused, and utterly demoralized that the only way I could learn to trust myself was to understand psychopathology and where others' problems ended and where mine began. Much of my life I've had to accept more responsibility than I think I've needed to or should for others' bad behavior. So learning about mental conditions has been very important. Now that I'm a much more mature and articulate adult, the practitioners I've interfaced with (with one exception) have been very responsive to me. However, there have been friends and family who dismiss my "compulsion" suggesting that it's unhealthy and it's making me mentally ill. When you've endured a lifetime of trauma, wouldn't it be advisable to better understand how it happened as so you can take charge and ideally not let it keep happening? Unlike others, I take active efforts to own my shit. But I think too many people are quick to judge, and derail those who are trying to be conscientious about how they live their life. She's still in complete denial and still talks and behaves much younger than her actual age. I hear her talk and she sounds like a child, not only in her high pitch vocal range but in her use of language-her limited vocabulary. Her Twitch followers have asked her about her mental health and she says she's great, as always. Sad. And I've seen comments from people stating that they're either 1) triggered by the content or b) wish they were as skinny as her. I reported her latest "cosplay" video which is another body check for her.

I really resonate with eating disorders. For the last few years, I’ve struggled with self-image and have had a fear of gaining weight. I started restricting how much I was eating and it only went downhill from there. It got to the point where my parents were concerned that I was becoming underweight and the lasting effects that would have. I haven’t been diagnosed with any eating disorder by my therapist or psychiatrist, but I’m still struggling with how much I eat a day. I just want to say that it’s great to talk about eating disorders when we can because the worst thing is that no one talks about it and it goes unnoticed for a long time, even beyond the point of it being too late. Great video!

My husband, and had the binge/purge type... he self checked into rehab for alcohol use almost 30 years ago, and was kicked out, for taking a pack of top ramen (told on, by someone who was court committed), just as they were beginning to address his disordered eating 😔 To this day, he binges, but hasn't purged but maybe once or twice, the 12 years we have been together. He went to CBT, after a work accident in 2013, and has only binged a handful of times since then, so it definitely helped; but it is so sad, that it's often overlooked, especially in men. Hope anyone who is dealing with/or has a loved one dealing with, knows they aren't alone. If love could fix all of our problems, they wouldnt exist.💔

Thank you for touching on the truly deadly nature of this illness. I think it's also important to know that EDs are not a decision someone makes; sure, they may make the conscious effort to restrict food at first to (improperly) cope with stressors or perceived unhappiness with one's body, but the deadly part is how gradually it takes over the mind, to the point where you truly don't understand the severity of your illness until someone else intervenes, and by then you are so "comfortable" with your habits that the idea of disrupting them with treatment is incredibly disturbing. While I still have physical damage to this day done in my few years of anorexia that I have to live with, I am so grateful I was able to get help and recover when I did, this illness is truly serious.

I think the Shane video was more about reintroducing her to You Tube in a way that she felt protected. So glad for the progress she has made. Off topic... the fact that Katie called her clients "patients" is hierarchical and not conducive to reducing reticence to counseling in my opinion of course. She tends to make absolute pronouncements with no caveats. That concerns me as people have accepted the unquestionable expert she presents herself as. She says many helpful things and does help people I am sure. My concern is when people have more confidence yet less reliance on what the peer reviewed journals indicate. The more you know, the less likely you are to believe you know absolutes in my experience. In my doctoral program we discussed the labeling of clients and client is the preferred, and in my opinion more accurate and helpful term. I dare say it says something about a person if they choose the word patient. Thank you for your astuteness and the work you put into your videos. You come across as educational, caring, balanced, and with no ulterior motives of wanting to have your own talk show and public status. If that were to happen, great, but I don't sense that it is your driving force. I feel protective of people when they are vulnerable or I wouldn't have pontificated about this. I sincerely appreciate that a professional of your caliber and nature is willing to educate all of us. I am not trying to be a kiss ass. I also could be wrong about my perception of Katie and focusing too much on possible blind spots any of us might have. I just want people to know every therapist is unique, all are trying to do a good job, and nobody is perfect. Some clinicians are better suited to the job than others. If Katie helps you, great. If Dr. Grande helps you, great. Whatever is healing for you is what we hope for.

Did something traumatic happen in the year leading up to you becoming anorexic? I've noticed there's two main reasons someone becomes anorexic. One, chronic controlling mothers. Or two, traumatic experience that precedes obsessive thoughts about weight. The first type I think is what Eugenia is dealing with. Her mother controls her whole life. In my view only, it seems harder to overcome anorexia when it is a chronic case of parental manipulation and control. If it is a singular traumatic event, the feelings can be unlocked and purged with treatment. With a controlling mother, things are harder and more complicated, but of course treatment can still help. I think it is just a longer road to recovery in that instance. I'm sure tthere are other causes. I'm just talking about what I've personally noticed about this eating disorder.

I fear if Eugenia doesn’t get help for her eating disorder soon the outcome is going to be terrible. People make comments expressing their concern but Eugenia just blows them off. She makes sure to pose so the camera shows her ribs, dresses to show her bones sticking out in her neck and décolletage and to show her arms and legs which are so tiny, the same size from top to bottom. I seriously don’t see how Eugenia stays upright. Seeing her like this breaks my heart. I question why You Tube leaves her channel monetized or even up at all.

I didnt care for the video. I dont know how he could have done it differently or better. I just dont think the topic was covered very well. Do people really need to tip toe on this subject? I think it would have helped if he also interviewed someone else in recovery with many years under their belt.
@shadown2027
@shadown2027 5 жыл бұрын
Yes they do need to tiptoe. I suffer from an ED and most people on the ED website I'm on wanted Eugenia to go into detail so they could use her "tricks" to stay that thin and not lose hair or teeth. I dont think he could have done it differently, but I think any level of detail was always going to trigger people and the clips he used weren't anything people couldn't already see on her channel. He interviewed her so she could ease back into KZbin and because she's so famous for having an eating disorder and not admitting to it. I don't think interviewing someone else would have had the same interest or traction

100% agree. She can’t even bring herself to say the word anorexia, she’s still clearly scarily underweight, and she’s only been out of rehab a month ... there’s absolutely no way she was ready for this. I had an ED much, much, much less severe than Eugenia’s and six years later I would still say I’m in recovery to an extent. Eugenia isn’t anywhere near any meaningful kind of recovery unfortunately. I think it’s something that you have to fight against for years and years, possibly your whole life, once you’ve experienced it.

I think *this* is really the crux of the issue: the "tip-toeing" around the subject. If you have to do it during an interview with someone who is ostensibly "in recovery", perhaps they've not been working on their recovery for long enough for the interview to be a good idea in the first place? IDK.

I guess the point of the video wasn't to explain or educate about the topic of eating disorders (which shane dawson isn't in the position to do as he's not a professional of mental health). It was more to share eugenia's story. It would've been very disrespectful to tell eugenia she has anorexia and just force her to say she has it when she's not comfortable saying that. She just started recovery, these things take time

She's deeply abused and traumatized. Her mother is all kinds pf crazy and twisted, and has been on camera in the background of eugenia's video's saying she wants to use Eugenia for money, and basically she controls the girl. Therefore Eugenia was never allowed to express anger, because that would be a threat to her mom being able to streat Eugenia as a slave/prisoner/workhorse.

I found that aspect very disturbing because to me it shows she has no boundaries or instincts to protect herself. People who are abused act similarly 😔 and people with little control over their lives can use eating disorders as their only way to have some control.

I've never had an ED but I can understand hyper-focusing on certain parts of one's body to such an extent it warps one's entire self-perception. I have a non-flat stomach that wasn't flat even when I was underweight for a while due to stress. It makes me think of myself as skinny-fat while my overweight family have always called me little and skinny. Seeing yourself as others do is hard since they don't have your insecurities when they look at your body.

Hi Dr.Grande, I wanted to say you put these together very well. I have a question regarding Eugenia Cooneys mother. Many people assume she has munchausen by proxy. But I was reading something, on what was called “the unloving mother” while I know you can’t diagnose her mother as she is not your client, I was wondering if you saw any similarities between her and the “unloving mother” theory I have. Thank you for doing what you do, be safe and well.

This disorder killed my sister in law last year and her steady, persistent decline despite all of our best efforts and professional help and eventual loss was devastating to everyone who knew her. What you stated as indications for having anorexia with purging and how it can progress were dead on, she was a textbook example. I really hope more attention IS brought to this and people start to understand exactly HOW dangerous eating disorders really are. Thank-you for your video, it was informative as ever and I hope many families of people who need to know these things are able to educate themselves a little better with it.

Dr. Grande thanks for a great video I'm getting to years too late. Could you please consider doing another piece on Eugenia? I've watched her since she started YT when I was a teenager and it definitely added to my disordered thinking, not to place blame or anything eek. But she's doing so, so bad again, would you consider going over it again or possibly going over the aspects of the damage she does not only to herself but to impressionable fans? Much love! Love finding videos of yours I haven't watched.

I only know about this situation because of time spent on KZbin due to quarantine. Besides the frightening images of this girl, I have read numerous responses from girls admitting that they developed eating disorders from watching her. I think it took awhile for fans to realize something was wrong and at first she was receiving complements on how skinny she was. Hence, younger girls followed suit.
@folkloreofbeing

I didn't know how skinny I was until I overheard a group of girls talking about how thin I was. ("omg! How can she carry those shopping bags! Look how thin she is! ) When I got home, I looked in the mirror and saw what they saw. Before that, I was just annoyed with everyone saying 'You're getting too thin', because I didn't look that bad to me.

With regards to the focusing on certain body parts ect and the perception of how someone with such a disorder may view themselves and also some correlation with ocd and some kind of perfectionistic personality, would you say it would be fair to acknowledge that there is overlap between focusing on such body parts in ways which may seem delusional or warped to others but also as a potential symptom/criteria of OCPD - of a person being detail focused and thus unable to really see the bigger picture? Obviously this is depending on how one either does or does not present with other potential criteria/symptoms. Therefore is it possible the higher comorbidity rate between for example anorexia nervosa and OCD, may actually be mis represented and could actually be OCPD comorbid with AN more frequently than is currently understood to be the case.

When I saw the video on the recommendation I was like "isn't that still too early?" Like she didn't say first that she would like to share her journey. It was Shane that approached her so hearing her responses were...expected. I had anorexia when I was around 14-15 (I’m 21 now) I was underweight however unlike what you said in the video- when I looked in the mirror I DID NOT see an underweight person. I didn’t see myself as giant either- I guess it was more that I saw myself as normally thin but not too thin. The reason I kept going with the weight loss and calorie restriction is less so that I WANTED to loose more weight and more so because I was literally SCARED of food. Anorexia becomes addicting in a way that once you’re in that mindset, restricting your calories, you become of afraid of food you think that eating more that x amount of food a day will blow you up and make you giant. I wasn’t thinking about loosing more weight at this point, it was more a byproduct of being afraid of food.

Would you possibly do a video discussing the difference between ADHD and ADD (other than the obvious)? It's hard to find information on the non-hyperactive of the two. Also, the multiple disorders/illnesses that come along with ADD/ADHD? I was diagnosed when I was 13 and took it for what it was and went on. I wanted to be "normal" and not have to take a medication everyday which lead to a downward spiral. Depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and more. I finally decided to get help and I'm trying to understand it rather than taking medication and going on.

Great video and information! Thank you. I noticed Eugenia seems to always say something nice. It seems she has trouble with verbalizing any negativity. I wonder if this plays a part in her controlling her food intake. As it is something she can absolutely control. So because she has trouble voicing her actual feelings she turns to food restriction.

KZbin has blurred reality and entertainment, and there's a serious misuse of this platform all the time. Great video Todd, it's a reminder that we have to separate the entertainment and the reality as viewers, especially when the topic is as serious as this.
