He’s one of the best guitarists ever. So underrated. Also a real nice guy who comes out after the shows and meets with the fans (for free!😅). Thanks for this interview. Favorite band.

It's a beautiful song. And the solo is the icing on the cake. I stopped listening to them after the following album, because they changed their style radically and that wasn't my kind of music anymore. There might be some interesting stuff on later albums, but I lost interest. Things like that happen.

One of the most underrated and under appreciated guitar players ever. His solos on the albums with Fish are arguably the best solos in rock music till this day. I’m not familiar with his post-Fish work, but I suspect it’s as high quality.

Steve is undoubtedly one of the great guitarists of all time. Up there with Gilmour. I was a massive million fan as a teen. They were incredible. The comparison with genesis is telling though as after Gabriel left genesis both went on to achieve huge global success whereas with marillion the opposite occured proving together their sum was greater than the parts.

Steve's guitar solos have always resonated with me since I first heard Marillion back in the late 80's! I grew up listening to Prog and my Brother turned me on to Hotel Hobbies and I was completely blown away. Never looked back!!!

This is a surprise moment, I didn't think Marillion were on your radar John, but thank you. First gig I ever went to was Marillion in 1986, was a phenomenal night. Saw them with Steve H in 1994, 1997 and then in 2001 (I think) My first drum clinic was also with their drummer Ian Moseley too. This band have a massive place in my upbringing!

A trouble when you want to listen to the aforementioned _Care_ is that the CD manufacturer failed in its job. Track numbering is wrong - it counts entire songs as well as individual parts thereof. In effect, for example, cover list no. 4 _Murder Machines_ is no.8 in your player, and no. 7 _Care_ is 15 through 18. You have to read micro fonts and do your own recalculations to listen to any selected track (I know I know, such albums are listened to in their entirety, but still, such a silly mistake to do while finishing a big work).

The trick about about the guitar licks of Steve Rothery is simple . Never rely on the pentatonic scale, always includes the semi tone which sound the best in the scale, play on one or two strings, the rest is sound (sustain , vibrato and clear sound) and speed : never play fast to let the emotion pierces through the mix . The trap for every guitarist is the speed . Dare to play slowly is the key .

Marillion must be sick to the bone on the topic of Fish. Yes, Steve is a phenomenal guitarist, my favorite along with Steve Hackett who interestingly is one of Rothery's major influences.

My favourite track is Made Again. The lyrics are beautiful and the guitar doesn't over shine them, but perfectly equals them. I can't say that its totally original as in I don't go 'wow how did he come up with that', its more like if somebody had sang him the lyrics that he'd go 'oh yeah, this is what that need..." It reminds me a lot of a much shorter track, which is Steve Hacketts guitar work on 'aisle of plenty'.

IMHO, he didn't panicked, it was just that the whole band shat in their pants, knew that they had no choice but going on or go back to work at some factory or shit jobs and they must have been furious because they knew there is nobody else like Derek... Of the very few that would have been able to keep Marillion at the height they reached end 80's? Ronnie James Dio, Jon Anderson... There later were some wonderful people who appeared in prog-metal, especially girls with amazing voices and talent, but end 80's, at best, they were in middle school, if not elementary school

To be fair, Clutching at Straws was not the huge success that MC was. And I remember a long time ago reading that either this guy or the keyboardist or someboyd in the bad was mad that Warm Wet Circles could maybe have been a single if it didn't have the racy words that Fish insisted on. You have to remember that a lot of bands don't give a shit about lyrics or singers. There are LOTS of singers out there and Marillion was always accomplished musically. So its just as likely that when Fish left they were like "phew, maybe we can just get a singer who will sing what we like and maybe get some airplay again.
