During the second season the women who followed Jesus were asking Mary about the birth. As soon as the character said, “It was messy” I had to make a note of that. So when the movie came out I explained to my kids, prior to seeing it, that there might be some heresy regarding the birth of Jesus. It opened up for great discussion afterwards. It was a great opportunity to explain differences between Catholicism and Protestant beliefs. We also told them that this is one area where the Protestants fall short cuz of Martin Luther.

I am grateful for your teachings John Henry. Although I have heard each revelation you have shared; it certainly helps me quite a lot when someone with theologically experience interprets. By the grace of God I have never doubted the virginity of our Blessed Mother since God would never allow his son to be conceived and carried for 9 months by someone impure. My husband and I have been praying the holy rosary for 10 years (in Spanish) and we enjoy it very much, especially this part “Oh Sovereign Sanctuary Tabernacle of the Eternal Word…….” This one as well “Mary Most Holy, temple, Throne and tabernacle of the Holy Trinity” referring to Mary’s womb. I’m in my early 60’s and when I was a child my grandmother taught certain (traditional) prayers that are real difficult to find. God bless you all!🙏

Thank you John Henry I found this most inspiring. In my heart I have always held this truth based on the Dogma of The Immaculate Conception as you described it. Backing it all up with the Scriptures themselves and the visionaries accounts certainly solidified the truth of Mary’s Perpetual Virginity. Protestant production - writers and director...they will always get Mary, and Joseph wrong. I do watch it but don't pin any theology on it. I enjoy the episodes as much as i enjoy the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
@brandywineblue3 күн бұрын
Difference being is that the Lord of the Rings books were written by a real Catholic, as an allegory for the Christian faith.
@SENIORaMOMENTS3 күн бұрын
@brandywineblue i know that. LOTR is fiction, whilst The Chosen is not but taking liberties with their imagined scenarios/dialogues that happened between and amongst biblical characters ... the characters real persons themselves. So in that sense, both are simply entertainment for me - and enjoy both. Now, as far as theology is concerned, LOTR has Catholic leanings and Thr Chosen is definitely not Catholic - that's why the prod will always get Mary and Joseph wrong.

I read City of God, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich and now joyfully reading Maria Valtorta. I think where some may think Mary had labour pains, as it says that Mary laboured to give birth in Revelations 12...but Mary was labouring to give new birth/new life of soul for Her children given to Her by Christ on the Cross. Labouring while helping us to reach salvation because She is our mother.

I absolutely love The Chosen. It's very moving and beautifully done. They even consult Catholic priests but regardless, we know our faith and if something differs a bit then it's ok because we know the truth. So much of daily conversations and events in the Apostle's lives are unknown and unwritten in the bible so they ( The Chosen) carefully speculate and investigate with theologians and biblical scholars of the Catholic and Protestant faiths as to how it might have been. If you watch their videos on the back stories they tell you this. The series have converted thousands and thousands to Christianity so it bears great fruit.

Mary in Revelation 12:1-2: "A great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child. SHE CRIED OUT IN PAIN, LABORING TO GIVE BIRTH."
@MichaelZappa-be4kwКүн бұрын
Perhaps Mary DID experience pain during the birth of Jesus for two reasons: 1) to fully share in the experience of being a human woman--she was free of original sin, but she was fully human; 2) as a participation in the physical pain her Son would suffer during the crucifixion.

Yes, the Chosen got that wrong, nevertheless it was an overall great series. Over that incidents friendships broke, the Catholic community was devided. Now did Mel Gibson in 'The Passion of Christ' get the garden of Gethsemane scene wrong by portraying Lucifer as the angel??? Wheras pious Catholic opinion holds that Michael the archangel fulfilled this role. Scripture certainly records angels ministering to Jesus. “And there appeared to [Jesus] an angel from heaven, strengthening him” (Luke 22:43) Yet it is the best Catholic movie ever made.

That doesn’t make the errors in it okay. Those things are still gravely sinful and offensive. There are many Catholics who openly reject Marian dogmas and mock Catholics who hold to those beliefs. There are many more who simply don’t know any better and don’t take the time to research the matter. Also, it is possible the consulted Catholics said the portrayal was wrong and those in charge chose not to fix it. Having consulted Catholics is meaningless in this case and doesn’t make up for the sins committed against Our Lady.

I watched 6 episodes of The Chosen, but there were so many inaccuracies I just couldn’t watch anymore. From the Blessed Mother appearing like an average middle aged woman, not beautiful nor with a heavenly aura bothered me. Plus, they made her look like a gypsy not a reverent, holy, conservative mother. Then, Joseph was portrayed as black or Indian, which is not true since they were both from the lineage of King David, devout Jews, who didn’t mix interracially. Then , they portrayed Peter as a gambler, Magdalena, an alcoholic, and Matthew as Autistic- which didn’t exist back then, plus the Romans wouldn’t have tolerated anyone less than perfectly healthy to work with. Of course, they portrayed the Virgin Mary erroneously as an average sinful woman having labor pains during child birth because the director and producers are not Catholic, who didn’t do enough research about the Holy Family and the Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception and the holy birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Very frustrating. ❤

I appreciate John Henry doing his work in showing us as Catholic our true theology. Understanding Mary Is extremely important. If it’s missed in a series, we have to call it out. Otherwise, we miss the forest through the trees, understand our faith, not just prices of it, and staying quiet because Protestants may be offended.
@daniellejarvis1573 күн бұрын
A lot of what the Catholic church teaches is an extrapolation and 'understanding' of the Bible, but the Bible doesn't explicitly (or even implicitly) say these things. WE assume that Mary was conceived without sin, but that actually is nowhere in the Bible, it just makes sense to us. I can fully understand the Protestants aspect of her being a 'normal' person who said Yes to God. That is equally biblical.
@marygreen62 күн бұрын
The Church existed before the Bible was put together by the Catholic monks. The Protestants should be thanking the Catholics for their broad history and theology, and trying to understand everything. Don’t limit yourself to thinking Mary was just another woman. God would make her special. I’m so thankful for this! Read Isaiah 7:14. Amazing.

CHRIST stopped Mary veneration/worship right at the beginning but pagans will continue to be pagans: Luke 11:27 KJV "And it came to pass, as HE (CHRIST) spoke these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto HIM, Blessed is the womb that bare you, and the paps which you have sucked. 28 But HE said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the WORD of GOD, and keep it." Matthew 12:47 KJV "Then one said unto HIM (CHRIST), Behold, YOUR mother and YOUR brethren stand without, desiring to speak with YOU. 48 But HE answered and said unto him that told HIM, Who is MY mother? and who are MY brethren? 49 And HE stretched forth HIS hand toward HIS disciples, and said, Behold MY mother and MY brethren! 50 For whosoever shall do the will of MY FATHER which is in Heaven, the same is MY brother, and sister, and mother."

As a woman I am so sick of hearing this. Mary was a REAL woman. She was free of original sin but not from prostaglandins. For the uterus of a real woman to expel a baby, it MUST begin contractions. Are they coming to the truth about Christ, or lies about Him? In the early centuries of Christianity, there were actual Christians, but also people who called themselves Christians but believed in lies about Jesus spread by a deacon named Arius. Look up St Nicholas, St Athanasius, and the Council of Nicea. Only the Truth saves. Love only rejoices with the truth.

Mary did not have pain during labor. Mary was a virgin before, during and after the birth of Christ. "Before she was in labour, she brought forth; before her time came to be delivered, she brought forth a man child." - Douay Rheims "To Eve it was said: In sorrow shalt thou bring forth children. Mary was exempt from this law, for preserving her virginal integrity inviolate she brought forth Jesus the Son of God without experiencing, as we have already said, any sense of pain." -Catechism of the Council of Trent " I answer that, The pains of childbirth are caused by the infant opening the passage from the womb. Now it has been said above (Question [28], Article [2], Replies to objections), that Christ came forth from the closed womb of His Mother, and, consequently, without opening the passage. Consequently there was no pain in that birth, as neither was there any corruption; on the contrary, there was much joy therein for that God-Man "was born into the world," according to Is. 35:1,2: "Like the lily, it shall bud forth and blossom, and shall rejoice with joy and praise." - St. Thomas Aquanis The Summa Theologica
