As Mike alluded to, the idea of a young, healthy woman taking a vow of chastity would have been preposterous in that time. And then getting married with no intention of consumating the marriage? There's no evidence that any such marriage arrangement ever happened in the Jewish world. I find it extremely odd that, if the Catholic church really believes that is what happened, then why don't they recognize that type of marriage? If a lady who had taken a vow of chastity (i.e. a nun) came to a priest with a guy and asked for them to be married, they would be (figuratively) laughed out of the room. One of the grounds for annulment in the Catholic church is failure to consumate the marriage.

There is one example in the Bible I can think of. However, the woman in question didn't make the vow, her father (Jephthah) did, and she then mourns over her virginity as a result. Some people believe she was actually sacrificed but the context of the passage makes it unlikely. It makes no sense for her to mourn her virginity rather than mourn her _life_ if she was actually sacrificed. The reason behind the misunderstanding is likely due to mistranslations. Jepthah makes a vow that the first thing to come out of his house would be given to the lord "and" sacrificed as a burnt offering. As I have heard, though, the original language may have actually meant and/or. Plus, it makes no sense that logically speaking he as a righteous man would make a vow that had a chance to sacrifice a person. Furthermore, he is still labeled as righteous later on in Scripture in Hebrews 11. Now, while this is (likely) a young women being pledged to virginity, it is not at all something she nor her father wanted. Her father made a foolish vow which robbed him of having an heir (she was his only child) and his daughter of raising a family as she was desired to raise.

Wouldn't it be more relevantly and relateably inspiring if Mary were just as she is indicated to be in the cannonical gospels - as a natural born common girl who faithfully played the divine providence of her mortal life (and promised lineage) out in being the immaculately seeded virgin vessel to purely incarnate God's direct proxy authority into our temporality - and then go on to stalwartly fulfill her secondary life duty for bearing the normal fruits of God's perennial designs as an exemplarary wife to her devoted husband? That preserves something emulatable as still a significant herione, rather than just an erroneous icon to misplace idolatrous exaltations upon. When groups retroactively meddle to heretically convolute the elegant rescue mission purpose of God's plan for redemptive grace unto us, their arbitrary ornations and superfluous semantics subvert it out of its sublime significance.

As far as go-to Biblical movies, it's hard to go wrong with The Gospel of John (the word for word version.) Not a stray or heritical idea because its literally adapting the entire book. It never gets old.

There is a big issue when a life of chastity is promoted as a virtue. When really, a woman should make their life about faith and grace. Most the time a Christian is not getting anywhere. This is why we need to hear how at fault we are, how human we are as individuals and how unreasonable we can be with each other. We are all less than Jesus, but we have grace. And we can go to Scripture to see how we are failing.
@michaelmagee431817 минут бұрын
I imagine someone already posted something like this but I strongly dislike any attempt to put Scripture to TV or film. The Bible has plenty of dialogue but not enough for a film. Rarely does a film completely adhere to the written word. For secular works this is not a huge problem, screenplay writers take liberty and add dialogue etc. Side note - have you ever heard someone say the book sucked but the movie was great? Anyway, Scripture is the Word of God and cannot be added to or subtracted from in the interest of art. This is for several reasons but one I can think of right away from The Chosen. The scene where little James is told he won't be healed is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. It is a wonderful scene - that is NOT in the Bible. So what? Well let's say your 8 year old watches and like any human is touched by the scene. This 8 year old grows up Christian but never connects the dots on the scene he loves so much in The Chosen. He goes to college and faces Bart Ehrman Junior who challenges the young man's faith. Bart asks why he believes. When the young man says something about the scene in The Chosen being some form of explanation for his faith - Bart will eat him alive and presto another misinformed atheists is born.

Mike… what if I told you the NT term “Virgin” was misunderstood? I am a Jewish scholar and would love to get your opinion about the redefinition of the words Almah and Betula… by non Jewish translators and Rabbinical disinterest in correcting (helping support) the NT. Can major changes be allowed or is tradition set in stone? Is there anyway to set a time to have a friendly and curious chat with no goal other than to hear your Christian perspective. As for the sensitivity of the topic I would like to chat in private in order to not cause controversy or external hostility in the comment sections or a question to be answered in a later video. Hope we can set up a 15 min chat.
