Did The Crown Honor Princess Diana's Iconic Fashion Moments (Part 1)

The Crown is one of Netflix's most popular TV shows, and has been beloved for its telling of the unknown stories of the British Royal Family. But at the same time, it's been lauded by proponents of the British Royal Family for being "fictional". While I haven't discussed any Season of the show on HauteLeMode thus far, Season 4 showcasing Emma Corrin as a young Diana Spencer was something I couldn't not discuss. Diana Spencer-Windsor was truly a fashion icon. She inspired so many through her beauty, philanthropic ventures, mental health struggles, and openess to being human and her fashion choices only bolstered all those other attributes. But to not analyze Diana's fashion moments would be a travesty in my opinion. So we break down some of her biggest looks from the first half of the series. Her semi-controversial photoshoot where her skirt was sheer when she was still a London school aide was a must to be discussed. Diana's sweater game was fire, from her black sheep sweater that predicted her place within the House of Windsor or her pink Peruvian sweater that showcased her early independence and resistance to adhere to the staunch rules of Royal life. We discuss how Amy Roberts, the costume designer for The Crown, was able to honor Diana's most memorable sartorial moments but also intertwined her lesser remembered moments in a way that enhances the story. We also get into some of Diana's choices in jewelry and how that changed her perception from within the Royal family. We also breakdown Diana's iconic wedding dress, the pomp and circumstance of the 1980's and it's effect on such a bodacious dress, as well as it's history making properties. Overall, it's hard to ignore the impact Diana had on the Royal family, and how both in real life and in the show, her clothing was an expresser of her feels and attitude.

Personally I view more as an exaggeration of the truth - Diana is technically, yes, a country girl, but she isn't a country girl in the way Philip wants. We also know that Diana never really liked running around in the mud so it feels like a part of it was her giving him the answer he wanted to hear at the very least. Sort of like not telling your partner's parents that you being a "dancer" means you're a stripper 😂

That was just the style. My aunt had a similar dress when she got married, and I’m like: “Whyyy! 😫” I look back at my mom’s old photos from the 1980’s, and the makeup and hair was over the top. But like you, I love all of it because it brings back a sense of nostalgia that can never be duplicated. I’m sure we will look back at 2020 and cringe at the trends, clothing, and makeup. Lol.

First off you have to remember that it was 1981 but it didn't really matter because her dress wasn't indicative of any particular decade. Her dress was designed after a fairy tale princess from any story book. Big sleeves, huge skirt, and tiny waist. Silk, lace, pearls, and rhinestones. It's timeless. I thought it was perfect for the cathedral. A smaller dress, and she would have been swallowed up by the church. It needed to be big and grand. This was the heir to the throne. Everything was "extra". And to those thinking she was so wrinkled.... raw silk does this. It's the beauty of the fabric. But notice how perfect she looked after David fluffed her up and smoothed out those wrinkles. I think this was a huge success for the Emmanuelle,s. I also loved her black strapless engagement gown which they also did.

From what I've watched and understood on the first episodes Diana wore only green outfits ( the mad tree , the dress , the green jacket ) it resemble to the Growth the Life and the new beginning and Charles saw Diana as his new beginning , then when she started to develop feeling for Charles there was some red details in her green outfits then it became completely Red ( red resemble to love , sex , emotions...) It's like she started to change from the innocent virgin little girl to a grown woman and the emotions she developed to Charles , after that she wore a lot of pink and the pink is the washed out version of red like her marriage is getting weaker , then she started wearing a lot of blue clothes as a resemble of the emptiness and the cold relationship with her husband and the royal family and also the depression sickness and her mental state

The early clothing before and around her wedding was actually a uniform worn by a group of people called Sloane Ranger trend. A group of wealthy young things that did not need to work but some did. It was traditional clothing but very expensive clothing that everyone yearned to be able to afford. But this was very much around the credit boom of the 80s and people used there credit cards and bought this trend to appear wealthy.

It looked great at the time, but maybe too much alcohol in me. We didn’t have drugs in the 80s so drinking was a big thing. Oh and we bought expensive cars with our new credit availability.

@@foxycinnamon7307 it was after the seventies that we had mad colours, spandex jumpsuits, the various romantics, New Romantics, it was garish and out there and the roller skates at clubs nearly killed me. Then when we all had money (credit) we saw the wealthy in there sweet outfits and flat shoes. I had 6 inch platforms in purple and blue. The shops clicked and started churning out replicas that we could affordable but we wanted the real thing. We cut our hair short as the Sloane did. You only had long hair if you were a child or lived through the 60s. It was an amazing time to be young. We could be anybody and do anything we wanted and we did. I regret nothing except dancing with roller skates at discos. That was idiotic.

The 70s were such a great time for style -- we had 70s parties and bought the clothes, played the music, thought we were fab in platforms and aped the 60s as well. The preppy look was kinda flash in the pan & so expensive unless you went to thrift stores. I was all over the map and still love all black, b & w, over the top dressing up! I regret nothing except some eyebrow experiments : ) I must get that book on Sloane style - I remember reading about Sloane Rangers.

I was a huge fan of Diana here in Belfast NI. Not so much for her being a Royal but because I shared the "Black Sheep" syndrome with her. I would love to see the controversy she created and when she actually didnt care anymore and started to do her own thing and sometimes even defy the Royal family.... I was... LIVING FOR IT ! When she was killed.. you have no idea what the tension and grief was like in the UK . The atmosphere was palpable . At the time I worked for Belfast City Council. We were all given the Saturday morning off .. PAID. TIME OFF to watch her funeral. That was hundred and hundreds of workers throughout all departments. She was a style icon for sure. When she got it wrong the Paps jumped all over it.. but when she got it right.... GIANNI VERSACE.. she was not a Princess... she was a QUEEN ! Sadly missed..even still. R.I.P.

I would love to see in the second part of this video your take on the current influence of Lady Diana Spencer in fashion. I mean granny sweaters, THAT dress and all the pearls she wore. Love her charities and goodwill which she highlighted vast fields whilst there are little to exact no media put their attentions before. For example her trip to NY she went to slum rather than glamorous places in town. Emma did an astounding job portraying her. For someone who grew up in 90s... all these little memories rushing in! I love this video!!! I recently discovered your channel and love the diversity of subject you canvas via your obvious and very articulate love for fashion. (The “Trojan Horse” allusion? Damn good). I do have a comment regarding your historical details in the context of Robert’s interpretation through the costume. I’m a big fan of how you’re incorporating the emotional & topical into her costume and Diana’s real life choices, and I think you could sharpen it even further by staying tuned to all the interview coming out with be cast & crew of The Crown. There were a few clashing opinions over Diana’s choices and how they’re influenced by the atmosphere she finds herself in, combined with her personal style/experiences. One that pokes out to me was about her “country girl” proclamation. In an interview with Emma, she commented on how she didn’t quite believe Diana’s self description of “country girl,” but was instead in admiration of Diana’s ability to meld and quickly adapt like a Chameleon in the most difficult of habitats. I think the actor’s opinions, as well as the opinions of the directors (I haven’t seen any with the costume dept yet), could add interesting insight into your review. They did study the characters in prep after all. Although, the actors do stress that this is Morgan’s interpretation, even going so far as to call it an alternate story to reality. But obviously, the whole production crew is pulling from reality in an attempt to pay adequate homage to the Royal’s complicated lives. Just a thought! I love your attention to detail, and I think it might interest you to see how the crew interprets the iconic costumes & actions as well!! Again, big fan-really looking forward to part 2.

I love that they added some of Diana’s iconic looks with a twist. But I feel like they over exaggerated her looks in the Crown instead of focusing on the real Diana’s processing growth in fashion. But overall, I’m very happy what they did with her looks in the show. So excited for Kristen Stewart’s portrayal next!
