I hope Samsung figures this out, whether that takes 2 months or 12, I really want the Fold to succeed. There are such die hard enthusiasts on both side of the fence, some desperately want it to fail while others defend it with such voracity it’s almost unnerving. I want this technology to become a mainstream option and if you like it or not at the very least we, as the consumer, win by giving us another option and in the end isn’t that a good thing.

0:50 this reminds me of the first galaxy edge screens, they were easily susceptible to screen damage even without having to man handle the device at all. The fold was bound to be plagued by such disastrous calamity because I honestly think they released it too soon. It needs to be perfected a little bit longer. Sometimes a race to get there first can also be the cause of a major fail.

At the present, LG's solution of attaching a secondary screen to the phone itself seems to be the most practical way. Sure the crease is replaced with two chunks of bezels but still at least it is a lot more reliable. Still water resistant, can also be folded into a smaller form factor. Both screens are also made out of glass so no need to worry about scratches as well. It seems to be the right compromise between screen real estate, portability and durability. On a side note, Samsung should make a tablet with its screen dimensions similar to the fold cause that form factor just seems to be perfect (even when open).

Just an FYI: this phone was in development for the past 8ish years. I'm guessing that they got to the point where the fold was actually usable in lab conditions, where there's no real-life testing. Maybe it was perfect at the lab, but messy in real life. And I also heard that some folds that were issued to reviewers were prototype units. Some didn't even have a battery capacity labeled on the battery. Nothing serious. Just explaining what I know as of now.

I want a small tablet (with an OLED) to read on to replace my kindle. The opportunities are endless for this thing it's truly the future. But sadly I think I'll wait until these kinks have been ironed out and the price comes down. Hopefully I'll be picking up a second or third generation of this thing. Fingers crossed they stretch out that front screen, improve the durability of foldable display (I didn't like the look of dust/lint collecting around that screen coating on the inside) and of course seal up all the ingress points. Samsung you're doing a great job and you're on the right track!

I'm excited for the future! I'm hoping that the Huawei avoids some of the issues the Galaxy fold had since the display isn't pinched by the hinge, but rather wraps around it. That being said with the foldable display being so delicate with today's tech, I can't imagine that it'll survive any sort drop test... I'm not sold on the Razr's design. Although I like the concept, for me the draw to a foldable display is more screen restate.

It's going to be very hard, for some time, for flexible displays to hold up, especially in usage scenarios like that of pocketable devices, it's one thing to have a curved or somewhat flexible display, creaseing even a piece of paper over & over will break down, another big issue is materials like plastics stiffen up when cold.

Well, like many youtuber's have said; (Michael included if I'm not mistaken) first gen product's take time to become fully fleshed out, like for example the first iPhone and, Android devices where nowhere near perfect so, it's going to take a while before foldable phone's become polished enough to be more common place, as smart phone's where back in the day essentially, history is repeating itself.

Michael, You made some very good point for and against the folding phones, but personally I feel the biggest drawback to them is something you didn’t make much mention of. It’s durability We have gotten so use to phones that are (for the most part) very durable. Water and dust resistance, screens that don’t scratch too easily, no moving parts to worry about. While glass is glass and glass will break (Zach lol) it is still MUCH more resistant to scratches than plastic. The hinge will be a magnet to dust and dirt getting into it and making not work well or break completely, and and dust or moisture has tons of openings in the phone to get in and play all kinds of mischief inside. Those are not things I think most people will be willing to accept. Maybe 10-15 years ago, but idk, I just don’t see these catching on in the mainstream any time soon. A niche market? Absolutely! To the tech minded and office workers that would be able to, let’s not sugar coat it, baby their phone, it will be great. But to the majority of phone users... anyone that works in a place that isn’t climate controlled, dust free, or easy on a phone, to active people, parents, kids, etc. I think they will prefer a device that can take a few hits and keep on ticking. Not to say the Fold isnt cool, as it is, but the trade offs just do not seem worth it, especially when you figure in that at least for now you can get a great new phone and tablet, both of which will hold up and last much longer, for much cheaper than the Fold. Maybe it’s just because I’m more of a blue collar guy than a white collar suit, but I highly doubt the glass sandwich is going anywhere anytime soon Ps. I will feel especially bad for the first one to take a $2000+ folding phone to a beach on a windy day and if it even survives will almost certainly have scratches all over the screen and sand permanently stuck in the hinge...all I can say is ouch...)
