The one thing I'm seeing people not really talk about is the fact that the current steam deck has an aspect ratio of 16:10 it's technically 720p but slightly taller with the 800P resolution so I'm very curious when people say 900 p are they referring to 900 p in the 16:10 aspect ratio because that's a very weird resolution then but if they're referring to the 900P in the 16:9 aspect ratio The actual vertical resolution will probably surpass 1080p
@iReturnV1deotapes

@@SWOTHDRA No it's not. He's right. It's a handheld PC. This is a new market they're dealing with and power efficiency is of utmost importance. The resolution has to stay low in order for the machine to maximize performance. I'f much rather play at ultra settings on a 720p screen than low settings at a 4k screen.
@TheKBrosTech
@TheKBrosTech 8 ай бұрын
@iReturnV1deotapes You can have your cake and eat it too. The ROG Ally has a 1080p, VRR 120Hz display with a 40Whr battery like the original Steam Deck. The battery lasts about 2 hours in heavy titles. Imagine if they crammed the 50Whr battery of the OLED Deck into it, then I'm guessing that'll rise to ~3+ hrs, especially if there's other efficiency improvements as well. If they can cram something even bigger than the current OLED Deck's battery, they could match the current Deck battery life but with 1080p, 120Hz. Is that worth it? That's up to people to decide...

I’m honestly hoping for a 1080p screen. Not because a handheld needs it, but because it would be convenient for docking to TV. The resolution and all your settings could stay the same, and docking would be seamless, unlike now with the Deck’s 800p screen. I had an Ally for a while (back to a Deck OLED now) and I hated it, but the one thing I liked more about it was exactly that, since it did have a 1080p screen.

I already love the rumored specs if it does get released at late 2026. However, I would love for them to have much modern specs at that generation, maybe: CPU: AMD Zen 5+ with 6 Cores (12 Threads) Unified Memory: 20 GB LPDDR5 (games will definitely need more memory by then) Graphics: AMD RDNA 4.5 with 16 CUs Display: ≈7.4-inch, 1440 × 900 Touchscreen LTPO/VRR HDR OLED @ 90Hz (but I think 120Hz would be a great too but the size should be the same to keep the portability) Power: 60Wh Lithium-ion battery Additional Stuff: - Two USB4 Ports (from top & bottom) - eGPU Support - PCIe Gen 4×4 SSD Support The price could start from $599 to $699 because that's the perfect price range for handheld PCs.

Valve wants it to be more Switch-like in pace, but unfortunately for them, they won't have Nintendo's ability to differentiate themselves with their first party offerings. The hand-held PC market is shaping up to be more like the mobile phone market in my view: it's cutthroat and fast-paced. There are already major titles that the deck can't run well. They'll have to move the deck to at least a 2-year refresh cycle to keep up.

I think they absolutely should support usb4 egpus by then... I love my deck just for some games I really wanna push it and take advantage of native resolution + 90fps + higher fidelity. The oled is great but I can rarely take advantage of everything it has to offer ALL AT ONCE. I have 2 desktop pcs but at this point the second a GOOD handheld comes out with USB4 I'm ripping the 4090 out of my main rig and tossing into an enclosure and selling those two desktops off. I LOVE the feeling of the deck but it just feels a bit power limited at times especially when I want to play a game casually at home on it. I REALLY want Nintendo to go egpu route with their next switch as well. Out and about it can be a "switch lite" but you can opt into the home console experience by having an egpu style dock, which will give you higher res and frame rate. I think the egpu market is so underutilized right now.

I think those who said the Nintendo Switch 2 dock having an independent GPU is exactly what you're thinking of. Have a 1080p handheld but when docked kicking it up to 4k with DLSS. Perhaps the dock could have a display port for the purpose of an eGPU would be an absolute dream! More casual consumers would find it pointless but for enthusiasts it would make it more future proof, then again this is Nintendo we're taking about and they don't exactly seem to like their consumer base that much lol

I doubt its true. Isn't the rumor that the Strix Point CPUs launching end of this year will dramatically improve APU performance? Like it may not go as high as the Strix Halo product rumors, but frankly I didn't think Phoenix was that big a leap over last year's APU model. If those rumors are true, that seems more like the "generational leap" that Valve said they want to wait for. I do hope they don't skimp out on RAM though. Some of these handhelds are honestly powerful enough (cpu wise) to be desktop replacements for a lot of budget build people.

None of this seems plausible. 900p is by no means a standard resolution, the APU specs don’t reflect the 50%-80% jump at 15W that Valve would target for a generational upgrade, and all of those for a higher price in 2026 is also not plausible. This speculation is both too aggressive with the display and too conservative with the APU. Not buying any of it.

I don't know about the architecture... both ZEN4 and RDNA4 are supposed to drop this year or early 2025 at latest. IF it trully is a Q3/2026 release window, then valve would shot themselfs in the foot with outdated tech, especially when looking at the SD-OLED. They made a system that squeezes out as much performance as posible with a 15W TDP window and a certain battery expectation. 16CU RDNA4 just doesn't sound like something that would fit in a 15W window. If it's a late 2026 release, i bet Valve and AMD will show us whatever custom version of "Medusa" they cook up. Medusa is a leaked ryzen client that was mentioned in the MS leaks as potential xbox architecture for the next console. ZEN6 and RDNA5 (skipping RDNA4, rumored to not be all that impressive) is the theme there and i believe that a 6Core custom chip with 12-16CU could very well fit in this 15W envelope, that gives the SD(OLED) such an amazing battery life. As for the screen. 900p seems a realistic upgrade, but i'd argue the current 800p resolution is already perfect. I already can't see a damn pixel on my Ally and was very satisfied with my 720p switch screen (resolution, min you). A blind test with two identical sized screens, 800p vs 900p, would be a nice experiment. I wonder how many could even tell the difference. Likely 900p will prevail, just to have "upgraded" it, for the sake of upgrading. We consumers are fish sometimes... As for memory choice... 24GB in capacity seems like a nice upgrade, without adding cost for a potentially unneeded 32GB config. As for speed, it would depend what they do. Will it be the regular "slap it on there" ram? Or will it be "on package"? Is it maybe LPDDR5X instead of normal DDR5? I think they'd go for LPDDR5X 24GB 8500MT/s (SK Hynix). Reasonable upgrade in capacity and should be very stable and issue free by Q3/2026. Likely another upgrade will be on the wifi chip side. Wifi7 is already arriving and it would make sense to be on top of the game here, considering all the thing a better wifi connection would offer you (network streaming is already a thing). As for battery upgrades: IF they would go for the whole on package memory and do some tight planing, 50Wh could be possible, but i think we'll at best see 42-45Wh. I don't think they'll do any major changes to the shells outer design, since it's popular as it is, limiting how much they can increase the size without changing the current internal layout completely. Storage will likely stay at 1TB. Debatable if there will be an upgrade to Gen5, but maybe they'll have a Gen5 interface and just keep Gen4 SSD "stock". Personaly, i think this would be the Q3/2026 Steam Deck: - 6 Core / 12 Threads CPU based on ZEN6 - 14CU GPU based on RDNA5 - 24GB 8500MT/s memory - 900p/90Hz Landscape OLED, with VRR and HDR support (30-90Hz range?) - Wifi7 and Bluetooth 5.4 - 512GB-1TB 2230 Gen4 SSD

And related wireless VR headset, though it could be used with any display/TV or handheld/tablet as long as it can run Steam Link. Edit: anyway there should be tons of devices along those lines from other manufacturers, maybe Valve won't have to step in to show how it should be done.

i call bs, these specs are way too low for 2026, when the steam deck came out, while the cpu was one or two gens older, everything was completly new tech and was revolutionary in the handheld market, valve wouldn't advance so little in half a decade as to use such outdated technology in the steam deck 2, these leaks are either false or are from a cancelled project of a steam deck 1.5 for late 2024/early 2025 that some employee just decided to leak.

I want to say they shouldn't have that much trouble getting Zen 5 for a handheld coming 2026. The launch of Steamdeck 1 was significantly delayed by the pandemic, so as long as Zen 5 is launched in 2025 Valve should have plenty of time to optimize their cores for Steamdeck 2026. The only thing that might get in the way of that idea is if the Zen archtecture is mostly played out and Zen 5 doesn't bring enough improvement, at which point Zen4 could end up both more cost and power efficient.

Steam has a slightly different model than the new kids Asus and MSI , they have store that can subsidize the price down a bit Zen 4 RDNA 4 32 GB Ram 512 gb upgradable SSD One thing I would love to see is a 1080p OLED 120hz display even if the APU can’t push that frame rate

The question is would they ask AMD to custom design an new APU for their second outing, or would they use the AMD Z series line to reduce costs and development time. If they could create a stable platform that uses the chipset, then next interations wouldn't take years and scaling wouldn't be an issue. If they can also prove to Asus and Lenovo that the Steam OS is the best performance solution for the architecture, they would increase Steam game sales :P Like Valve still doesn't sell to many countries, including in Asia, Middle East, South America and Australiasia.

Slight correction, and this is important: you said that you’re “locked in to their Steam ecosystem.” This is the opposite from the truth! You aren’t locked in to anything at all, which is fantastic! 2:09 This all looks great but the screen resolution really should be higher, when the highest supported resolution in most classic 90's games is 1600x1200 we would want either the horizontal or vertical axis to match, so the options are 1600x1000 or 1920x1200. I for one would love to see the return of straight up 4:3 aspect ratio 1600x1200.

Q3-Q4 2026 is a long time if it is expected to have future games running in the mentioned hardware. For sure future hardware and software will be making TONS of AI use for fake frames and other trickery but it will just get better and better until is becomes the new normal. As usual I believe Valve always watch Nintendo closely from a hardware perspective in particular for price/performance, a multiplatform releasing in Switch2 will run noticeable better on SD2. A more conspiratorial take is that Valve knows many people bought the Deck for Switch emulation and SD2 will have to be able to emulate S2.
