The battery lasts about 2 hours in heavy titles. Imagine if they crammed the 50Whr battery of the OLED Deck into it, then I'm guessing that'll rise to ~3+ hrs, especially if there's other efficiency improvements as well. If they can cram something even bigger than the current OLED Deck's battery, they could match the current Deck battery life but with 1080p, 120Hz. Is that worth it? That's up to people to decide...

I have 2 desktop pcs but at this point the second a GOOD handheld comes out with USB4 I'm ripping the 4090 out of my main rig and tossing into an enclosure and selling those two desktops off. I LOVE the feeling of the deck but it just feels a bit power limited at times especially when I want to play a game casually at home on it. I REALLY want Nintendo to go egpu route with their next switch as well. Out and about it can be a "switch lite" but you can opt into the home console experience by having an egpu style dock, which will give you higher res and frame rate. I think the egpu market is so underutilized right now.

I don't know about the architecture... both ZEN4 and RDNA4 are supposed to drop this year or early 2025 at latest. IF it trully is a Q3/2026 release window, then valve would shot themselfs in the foot with outdated tech, especially when looking at the SD-OLED. They made a system that squeezes out as much performance as posible with a 15W TDP window and a certain battery expectation. 16CU RDNA4 just doesn't sound like something that would fit in a 15W window. If it's a late 2026 release, i bet Valve and AMD will show us whatever custom version of "Medusa" they cook up. Medusa is a leaked ryzen client that was mentioned in the MS leaks as potential xbox architecture for the next console. ZEN6 and RDNA5 (skipping RDNA4, rumored to not be all that impressive) is the theme there and i believe that a 6Core custom chip with 12-16CU could very well fit in this 15W envelope, that gives the SD(OLED) such an amazing battery life. As for the screen. 900p seems a realistic upgrade, but i'd argue the current 800p resolution is already perfect. I already can't see a damn pixel on my Ally and was very satisfied with my 720p switch screen (resolution, min you). A blind test with two identical sized screens, 800p vs 900p, would be a nice experiment. I wonder how many could even tell the difference. Likely 900p will prevail, just to have "upgraded" it, for the sake of upgrading. We consumers are fish sometimes... As for memory choice... 24GB in capacity seems like a nice upgrade, without adding cost for a potentially unneeded 32GB config. As for speed, it would depend what they do. Will it be the regular "slap it on there" ram? Or will it be "on package"? Is it maybe LPDDR5X instead of normal DDR5? I think they'd go for LPDDR5X 24GB 8500MT/s (SK Hynix). Reasonable upgrade in capacity and should be very stable and issue free by Q3/2026. Likely another upgrade will be on the wifi chip side. Wifi7 is already arriving and it would make sense to be on top of the game here, considering all the thing a better wifi connection would offer you (network streaming is already a thing). As for battery upgrades: IF they would go for the whole on package memory and do some tight planing, 50Wh could be possible, but i think we'll at best see 42-45Wh. I don't think they'll do any major changes to the shells outer design, since it's popular as it is, limiting how much they can increase the size without changing the current internal layout completely. Storage will likely stay at 1TB. Debatable if there will be an upgrade to Gen5, but maybe they'll have a Gen5 interface and just keep Gen4 SSD "stock". Personaly, i think this would be the Q3/2026 Steam Deck: - 6 Core / 12 Threads CPU based on ZEN6 - 14CU GPU based on RDNA5 - 24GB 8500MT/s memory - 900p/90Hz Landscape OLED, with VRR and HDR support (30-90Hz range?) - Wifi7 and Bluetooth 5.4 - 512GB-1TB 2230 Gen4 SSD

I want to say they shouldn't have that much trouble getting Zen 5 for a handheld coming 2026. The launch of Steamdeck 1 was significantly delayed by the pandemic, so as long as Zen 5 is launched in 2025 Valve should have plenty of time to optimize their cores for Steamdeck 2026. The only thing that might get in the way of that idea is if the Zen archtecture is mostly played out and Zen 5 doesn't bring enough improvement, at which point Zen4 could end up both more cost and power efficient.

Steam has a slightly different model than the new kids Asus and MSI , they have store that can subsidize the price down a bit Zen 4 RDNA 4 32 GB Ram 512 gb upgradable SSD One thing I would love to see is a 1080p OLED 120hz display even if the APU can’t push that frame rate
@boxhead61778 ай бұрын
The question is would they ask AMD to custom design an new APU for their second outing, or would they use the AMD Z series line to reduce costs and development time. If they could create a stable platform that uses the chipset, then next interations wouldn't take years and scaling wouldn't be an issue. If they can also prove to Asus and Lenovo that the Steam OS is the best performance solution for the architecture, they would increase Steam game sales :P Like Valve still doesn't sell to many countries, including in Asia, Middle East, South America and Australiasia.

Slight correction, and this is important: you said that you’re “locked in to their Steam ecosystem.” This is the opposite from the truth! You aren’t locked in to anything at all, which is fantastic! Nothing is stopping you from getting and running games outside of Steam. You can even use competing stores. And this is why people love Valve: they aren’t hostile toward their customers.

Dumbest BS I've ever heard especially when you've already got handheld PC's AMD's 8 core 16 threaded APU with the Radeon 780M iGPU competing with the steamdeck at similar prices. Minimum it would have to be a Zen 5 APU with 8 cores 16 threads could also use Zen C design, beefed up iGPU based on RDNA4 using infinity cache to supplement memory bandwidth.

2:09 This all looks great but the screen resolution really should be higher, when the highest supported resolution in most classic 90's games is 1600x1200 we would want either the horizontal or vertical axis to match, so the options are 1600x1000 or 1920x1200. I for one would love to see the return of straight up 4:3 aspect ratio 1600x1200.

It all comes down to TDP. I don't think they'll cross the 30w threshold for the Deck 2. I really can't see them doing that. It's possible to go even lower than that but they'll have to go through a lot of energy optimization for the 12 CUs so they don't starve.

I don't believe this leak. The 2026 number just confirms it's BS. This would yield just 1.5-1.8x performance uplift current steam deck. Valve has explicitly stated that they don't want to do a steam deck 2 before they can do a very big performance jump. 2026 release of this would be much worse compared to video game demands in 2026 than the original steam was compared to video game demands when it launched.

Q3-Q4 2026 is a long time if it is expected to have future games running in the mentioned hardware. For sure future hardware and software will be making TONS of AI use for fake frames and other trickery but it will just get better and better until is becomes the new normal. As usual I believe Valve always watch Nintendo closely from a hardware perspective in particular for price/performance, a multiplatform releasing in Switch2 will run noticeable better on SD2. A more conspiratorial take is that Valve knows many people bought the Deck for Switch emulation and SD2 will have to be able to emulate S2.
