@science is dope: Well, if you are asking where Schrodinger's quote came from, it took less than 5 mins to find out it came from his semi-autobiographical work "what is life?". He has a chapter in it where he says the single most challenging part of his research was to develop a continuous function (solution of schrodinger's equation) for the spatial probability of discrete electrons and how to connect continuous functions with discrete results using ingenious functions like kronecker delta function. He did explicitly mention that the inspiration came from pedantic concept of all pervading (continuous) consciousness manifesting in discrete individual beings. That is a profound thought. Every same individual knows that vedanta was not talking of science but metaphysics . If anybody made a claim that vedanta is a precursor to science, you are using idiotic arguments by rank morons to discredit the profundity of thought in vedanta. Vedanta is a deeply well thought metaphysics. Metaphysics is not science and not based on evidence. It is the depth and profundity of thought within vedanta that is indeed beautiful and inspirational to great minds like Scheodinger, Oppenheimer and Schopenhauer. Why are you dismissing it? That is ludicrous.

@Science is Dope: Also, the comment on authority is misleading. What is your achievement in science? What is the number of highly cited and peer reviewed journal publications you have produced in high impact factor journals? This matters a lot in terms of whether your assertions carry weight as such achievements are a minor guarantee of your capabilities in science. So, what Scheodinger or Oppenheimer say does matter simply on the basis of their scientific achievements. This is the worst video I have found on internet in terms of exploring relationship between science and religion. I hope you dont take it down since as a professor of physics, when I teach pupils regarding this topic, i know to show this video as the worst possible example that is there so far.

@anantverma3428 Stop reading comments half way and reacting. I already answered your question. Any Tom Dick and Harry can make any nonsense claim they want. It has zero impact unless it goes through a peer review process in a decently reputed journal. That is the authority and that is how science works. Incapable people who have zero contributions in the field of science making illogical arguments like the speaker in the video here (read the comment I made on the logical fallacy pranav made by connecting metaphysics and science in the wrong way) have zero impact on the actual progress of science. If Pranav has some meaningful contributions to science (decently cited papers in high impact factor journals), let him come out with it. I will write to those journals regarding this video.

Gita, Vedas and Upanishads are philisophical texts, meaning they delve into fields like existentialism, mind, reasoning, etc. The scientists mentioned in above video come from the era when Germany and Austria were known for advancing the field of quantum mechanics. This field of physics at that time required thought experiments and thinking deeply into tiny world of matter. Also during that time, Sanskrit and Hindu texts were being researched by the German philosophical society, so it is evident that the scientists got hold of these texts. I am not saying that ancient Hindu texts had any quantum field theory or physics mentioned, just that by reading the philosophy behind those texts, the scientists were capable to bring more clarity on their thought experiments and bring about their discoveries. On the other hand, you won't hear the British and American scientists of that time mentioning much about Hinduism because research into Hindu philosophy was not the topic of discussion in their circles.

Hey, Pranav I was waiting for you to say this. These scientists did read Hindu scriptures especially the Upanishads from the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita to know about Indian philosophy, but not for Scientific discoveries or Science. I wanted you to tell the audience that there's a huge difference between these two things - Philosophy and Science. Many discoveries in Quantum Physics like the dual nature of the particle or the presence of an electron at two points at the same time were difficult to digest for many at a time when anything that defied Classical Physics was considered incorrect. So these scientists found solace in the Upanishads, a philosophical part of the Vedas devoid of any religious practices. In Upanishads, they found echoes of their theories and a philosophical foundation to ensure they would no longer be cast adrift by the implications of Quantum Physics. No one actually tells you that these scientists were also critical of other parts of the Vedas which are full of outdated, unscientific or superstitious practices of deity appeasement. These scientists were interested in just philosophy and not religion. Basically, they were hardcore scientists at heart and believed in the scientific method of evidence-based understanding of things. But as every man needs a philosophical foundation to his life, they too wanted the best of every philosophy out there whether from East or West. So they looked at these things out of interest and curiosity for their philosophical pursuits. This has nothing to do with science or their scientific discoveries. An outstanding article on this topic of Upanishads and Scientists is on Science The Wire. Go check out that for more information on this topic.

This is the problem with extremists. The Hindu extreme think Oppenheimer was actually uppala Narasimha coz he read and liked Gita. Atheists think religion is useless and played no role in their lives coz they didn’t make thesis and research papers on it. It’s spirituality and science. Ramanujan said the Devi leaves the equations on his tongue. Is that rational? Is there any evidence of a goddess coming and somehow putting ideas into Ramanujan brain like in inception…or if going by your logic, since he said tongue, LITERALLY on his tongue? No. We all know it was ramanujan’s genius. Muhammed Ali says all his strength has come from allah….do we have evidence that allah was connected to Ali through a artery and sending him his powerful blood? No. He was doing it all by his hardwork and talent all the years. But these ppl mentally derive their strength from being spiritual. The thing is, spirituality makes humans do extraordinary things. Thats why great minds use religion for self introspection and mental health, whereas lesser men take every word literally and debate around if the words meant one thing or another.

Our goal is to understand the nature, the universe, through scientific means & hence, all the ancient texts don't stand a chance in this endeavour. 2. Having said that, these texts have their own place in the society. I completely agree with what Pranav said that they surely are piece of art worth cherishing, and at times give very profound insights. 3. These texts are surely marvelous and worth exploring, simply because of the ideas and topics they discuss. As Socrates said, it's a mark of an educated mind to entertain an idea without accepting it. 4. The problem arises when one starts reading way too much between the lines or begins mis-representing/mis-associating them in sciences.

But in reality, other planets can't cause lunar eclipses on Earth. Btw, there are 8 planets, if you include Pluto, you have to include other dwarf planets too, which will cause the number go up. Video Summary Introduction: In this video, the creator discusses the claims made by some individuals that Hinduism is greatly compatible with science. They specifically focus on the statements made by four scientists: Julius Robert Oppenheimer, Carl Sagan, Erwin Schrödinger, and Werner Heisenberg. The video aims to debunk these claims and highlight the misinterpretations and exaggerations made by those who associate Hinduism with science. Retelling of the Video: 1. Julius Robert Oppenheimer: Oppenheimer, known as the father of the atomic bomb, famously quoted a line from the Bhagavad Gita when witnessing the testing of the first atomic bomb. Some people interpret this quote as evidence of Hinduism's compatibility with science. However, the creator argues that Oppenheimer was simply using a religious metaphor to describe the awe he felt during the explosion. The claim that ancient Hindu texts mention nuclear weapons is baseless, as there is no scientific evidence to support it. 2. Carl Sagan: Carl Sagan, a renowned science communicator, is often quoted by those claiming that he regarded Hinduism as the greatest among religions. However, this claim is taken out of context. In a video discussing how ancient civilizations viewed the universe, Sagan mentions that Hindu myths have time scales comparable to modern scientific cosmology. He states that this correspondence is likely a coincidence, and there is no scientific evidence to confirm the claims made in Hindu mythology. 3. Erwin Schrödinger: Schrödinger, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, is also cited by Hindu nationalist blogs to support their claims. However, the creator couldn't find any scientific significance in the quote attributed to Schrödinger. It appears that these blogs are more interested in finding famous scientists who mention Hinduism rather than seeking genuine scientific evidence. 4. Werner Heisenberg: The creator mentions a quote by Werner Heisenberg, but no elaboration or context could be found. It seems that this quote is also being used to associate Hinduism with science without any scientific basis. Conclusion: The video concludes that these claims of Hinduism's compatibility with science are often exaggerated and misinterpreted. Quoting individual scientists or cherry-picking quotes does not provide scientific evidence or consensus. It is important to critically examine the context and consensus within the scientific community before making any claims about the compatibility of religion and science.

The scientists that were mentioned in the video actually took inspiration from Vedanta, i.e., Bhagwad Gita, Upanishads and Brahmasutras, by grasping its philosophical aspects and stay motivated into their pursuit. But the problem is when people especially hindus start saying things like "See that XYZ Nobel Prize Winner scientist quoted our religious texts, so he/she discovered their findings from our scriptures. Hence, our ancients were great scientists and we were the first ones to teach the World." So this kind of argument shows how naive and stupid you are. In fact most hindus, themselves have not read Vedanta (as mentioned above) so they don't understand the fact that the scriptures are more of philosophical in nature than that of outer physical science. When it comes to Upanishads its interpretation of the nature of consciousness was a great achievement in philosophy. When it comes to its implications on science, by the very nature of their studies are limited to the domain of neurophilosophy and possible little neuroscience. I think we have to see such texts more as a philosophical one than as a religious thing, just like how we see the works of Kant, Schopenhauer, Spinoza etc.. It is also possible that they could influence various positions within the philosophy of science especially the philosophical interpretation of fundamental laws in quantum mechanics.

You talked about Sagan's video clip but not his own published book How arrogant You didn't talk about Schrödinger (who initially was a Sanskrit scholar but later got nobel in Physics) Why didn't you talk about Heisenberg? Why not Einstein's small yet influential mention? Why actually not highlight the verses from the Hindu texts taught so I guarantee you neither studied Physics Neither did you study Hindu scriptures We agree Hinduism isn't as accurate as modern science But whatever was said was logical and most of them are proved correct except that too many personifications and metaphors confuse us simple brains But other religions do not even talk about such topics They are still stuck in spreading love and kindness which people obviously do by default In Physics we study: Electron interacts with the world in 3 ways As wave (superposition and interference of ß-rays), As particle (bond formation), As energy (photoelectric effect and energy level changing) So similarly Hinduism says a single God can exist in several forms (Polymorphism) and reside at different places (like Superposition) And Hinduism also says that there is Only One God (Eka Brahma Dvitiya Nasti) So Hinduism isn't Polytheism, it is Polymorphic Monotheism (This is a very complex thing and gets easier if you study Carl Sagan's book on superposition ) And Shri Krishna also told Arjun that _any object is made of energy and every such energy belongs to Shri Krishna_ And this thing is taught in higher education Physics. That is, all matter in the universe is energy (E=mc² for converting) And also Thermodynamics teaches that the energy of the whole universe is conserved and also of same origin and are unified. Scientists like Heisenberg, Schrödinger, Sagan, Oppenheimer, Einstein acknowledged Hinduism Einstein just acknowledged but wasn't much into it Oppenheimer read Bhagvat Gita and followed Shri Krishna's principles in his daily life and the above mentioned word of Shri Krishna inspired him a lot (the death and destruction quote) Sagan later on converted to Hinduism Heisenberg after making his theory came to India and after his interaction with Rabindranath Tagore about the Vedas and Upanishads he said "The theories of modern science would be Easier for those to understand who read the Upanishads or Vedas" Schrödinger in one of his articles had some Physics theory and where he used Upanishads for reference (I don't understand the part too cuz it's very complex... 🐱) Now coming to Biological sciences, If we see the Avatars of Lord Vishnu, they appeared exactly in order of Phylogenetic progression

Great video as always pranav! a minor quibble, at 6:00 you mention that Sagan was an Atheist, which is incorrect. He called himself an agnostic throughout his life. He agreed with Einstein's support for Spinoza's god. A quote from him on atheism (source-wiki article on Carl Sagan) "An atheist is someone who is certain that God does not exist, someone who has compelling evidence against the existence of God. I know of no such compelling evidence. Because God can be relegated to remote times and places and to ultimate causes, we would have to know a great deal more about the universe than we do now to be sure that no such God exists. To be certain of the existence of God and to be certain of the nonexistence of God seem to me to be the confident extremes in a subject so riddled with doubt and uncertainty as to inspire very little confidence indeed" I am an atheist and consider Sagan to be a personal hero, so had to make sure his views were represented accurately. Thanks for your work in popularising the message of this legend.

Again brother you are misinterpreting things completely. Complete misunderstanding of philosophy and historical facts. Science indeed great tool( also only tool) to analyze external world but these scientists are also driven by philosophy of life and ethics , in which you don't seems any speciality(means background of reading philosophy). You are just quoting facts and studies to validate your arguments but brother how can you use these tools to understand philosophy? I agree these claims of nuclear weapons in history are bullshit but don't mix it with what scientists have to say about Hinduism as philosophy, and not orthodox religion. Vedant and upnishad are huge source of moral and philosophical base for scientists as you mentioned their quotes. Just don't bring your hate of right wing to timeless wisdom of sanatan dharma. Hope you will take this as constructive criticism.

Exactly. The criticism we needed. He is confusing metaphysics with scientific interpretations. Our ancient scriptures don't have anything scientific to claim but they made philosophical interpretations to scientific questions of the natural world.

Adding something to Sagan clip, in that episode he was discussing how human mind is curious, how the primitive humans tried to answer the question with whatever tools they have, and most of time resoted to common sense and mystical powers. He at NO POINT in that episode claim any religion is superior or got the science right. It's very heart breaking for to witness such nonsense around Dr Sagan. He's my Hero. Key Insights 💣 Oppenheimer described the awe he felt while witnessing the first atomic bomb blast by quoting lines from the Bhagavad-Gita, suggesting a connection between science and Hinduism. 📚 Fiction has often predicted technologies that did not exist at the time, raising the question of whether these authors should be credited for envisioning future advancements. 🌌 The speaker highlights that the Big Bang Theory, which suggests a clear beginning of space and time, was first proposed by Catholic priests, challenging the idea that it makes Christianity special. 🤔 "Instead of answering the question of how the universe was created with God or cultural myths, just say 'I don't know' when you don't have enough evidence to conclude something." 🧠 Knowledge doesn't come magically, as Carl Sagan points out that understanding reality requires more than just meditation and basic science is necessary. 🌌 Our understanding of reality and the age of the universe is based on empirical evidence, not wishful thinking. 🤔 "These people who want you to believe these ideas are going out of their way to find rationalizations to associate Hinduism with science."

Our definition of religion is primarily constructed by Abrahamic- Western understanding of God and Religion. So you will never be able to see Hinduism from Indic lens. The concept of God in Hinduism is different from Western Abrahamic faiths. Hindu view of God is the inner one, of pure consciousness, of the state of mind where fear evaporates, where you control your sense and you achieve the peace, equality within. You realise a that Atman (pure consciousness) is indeed Brahman (the infinite, eternal consciousness).. And Who developed Yoga? Today Yoga is world wide recognised, if you think Hinduism is false and superstitious, therefore yoga is automatically a superstitious too

Religion is personal thing. It gives inner peace and enlightenment of oneself to achieve outer things and success. So people who are saying it doesn't matter what religion he/she follows doesn't link to his/her achievement *is wrong*. If such great scientist feel it that one religion helps them directly or indirectly it matters. For being scientist you don't have to be Atheist. Just have faith in your religion without following wrong things.

Lord Krishna was not teaching Arjun on the battleground how to make an atom bomb. lol. Oppenheimer read the Geeta and at that time when he saw the atom bomb explode in front of his eyes he remembered the shloka from the Bhagwad Geeta when Lord Krishna appeared as Bhagwan Parambrhma AdiNarayan MahaVishnu in front of Arjun. His aura was equivalent to the combined light of a thousand suns as described in the Geeta itself. That particular shlok came to his mind when he witnessed the bomb explode in front of his eyes

Bro i hate one thing. Please spread my word to all religious people. Hindus are tolerant right? In bhagwat geeta also it is written about free thinking and all na? We should think on our own this is kind of covered in vedas and all stuff. But why is atheism considered a fault? According to Hindu scriptures, atheism is accepted. Even if you go to punjab, in langar everyone is given food to eat, doesn't matter if he is atheist or theist. Why don't Hindus learn something from them sometimes? Hinduism accepts atheism is my point. But people have forgot that because they haven't even read their own books. They are just misled by propaganda online.

Verse 11.32 of the Gita says: kālo’asmi, lokakśayakṛt pravṛddhaḥ lokān samāhartum iha pravṛttaḥ. The conventional translation of “kālaḥ” is “time”, and via this interpretation, here is the literal prose translation: “I am time, the cause of world-destruction, mighty; come here to annihilate the worlds.” Oppenheimer had read and studied the translation of Gita by Arthur W Ryder, in which we find: Death, am I, and my present task Destruction.
